Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

So I bagged a throttle body and idle stepper from a 1.4 AX. Seems they are the same as those on the 1.0 but I'm hoping they might have modified them from the ones fitted to the 1.0 as TPS wear seems to be a common problem. The TPS itself is a different colour so maybe that means something.

Anyway, fitted it this evening and it's running much much...

Hi All
I Recently had to put a new windscreen in my xantia after I got a small crack in it from a stone being thrown up on the motorway. I had to go thru my insurance who use a company that is run by a well known driving and breakdown service. So far I have rejected three windsceens that have been fitted. The main problem is the bottom two inches...

Hi Guys.
Currently trying to solve the following brake problem by a process of elimination.
The Problem: Occasionally once or twice per week I experience partial brake loss.. only when travelling slowly (so far) the pedal pulses like ABS cutting in but the effect is 'no brakes'.
So far I have blead the brakes thoroughly (10 min cycle each wheel)...

No it isn't Hydraflush Jim, it's Morris Lubricants LHM Plus which is relatively colourless compared to the Total brand of LHM. A change is due, but not untill I have the time to do do it properly i.e. filters etc.

You may notice that I have removed the shields from the rear discs.. just a personal preference, I like to keep on top of the brake...

Ok it now seems that after much converting, my parents have come round and realised that a Xantia might just be for them! It could be the subtle presence of a grey Activa currently residing on their driveway and me constantly singing their praises so if the right car turns up, they may be interested, if they can get shot of their Rover 420 SLi......

does anyone know if the clutch cable clip breaks more with self adjustting cables, rather than manualy adjusted, as i wonderd if another reason for it the fail might be over adjustting on one or the other type,

so when the pedel is pressed to the floor, it gets to the end of its travel before the pedel reaches the floor,

and in turn breaks the...

I brought a replacement clutch clip from CGS Autosystems in Gloucester in May 2004. It was £20 and beautifully done in aluminium. The mileage was 105k and the clutch was heavy. Over 4 years and 93k miles later, the clutch is still heavy. But I haven't had any other problems - no broken clips, no broken clutch cable and still a functioning clutch....

Some say oil flushing an old engine can create problems either cleaning out muck the engine has come to rely on, or through the blocking of small passageways.

So flush or not?

I'll run this as a 3-day poll.

Hi, new to french cars and picked up a 2002 C5 V6 auto couple of months ago 103000klm. Driving well but this morning I started it up and can't get it out of Park. I can hear the solanoid disengage the gear lever when I put my foot on the brake and I can then move the leaver from Park and to the right BUT I can't then move it down to reverse?...

you can manually release the lever if you remove the gearlever surround but as the solenoid can be heard i dont think this is the problem. may be a siezed cable assembly. disconect the cable from the gearbox end & check that the solenoid is disengaging then see if it moves.

Hi,I had a suspected leak from my Xantia radiator, when the car was running, water was pouring from the right side (standing in front of the car) of the valance and when the thermostat opened there was a small jet of water being forced through the intercooler and out of the grill. I've took the radiator out of the car but when I pour water into it...

if it is just a pin hole then yes it might only show its self under presure, can you not see any sign of were the coolant had come from, no stainning or marking of any kind, if it is just a pin hole im supprised K seal didnt fix it straight away, when i used K seal the leak stopped within seconds of fitting it

Hi,
I removed rear pads on N/S of sons car today. The old pads had worn down at an angle. When I looked harder at setup, I noticed that the brake disk is touching the calliper on the inner pad side, whereas there is a good 1/4 gap where the outer pad goes. There is only fractionally run out of true on disc.

From the moment the head came off my engine I was freaked by the combustion marks on the cylinder walls and the blasted-clean edges of the piston crowns which I put down to the use of easystart.

As per my blog, the RAC patrolman had used it to get the engine started back in April,and he advised me to buy myself a tin but warned try not to use it...

If you've seen my latest blog post, you'll see the head is now off but I can't see anything wrong. My friend thinks the gasket is not original due to the way it easily came off in one piece and initial inspection has drawn a blank.

I can usually spot an obviously failed gasket but this isn't one of those. What should I be looking for exactly?

The marks on the bores - and the piston corrosion (second photo) concern me. If it were my engine I'd pull the pistons out to inspect the rings - as if they are in good order I can't see how the marks on the bores could stay there. Others may have better theories - but as they say 'I've never seen anything like it in my life'

Having been impressed by the reliability of a chum’s Xantia I finally succumbed and bought one (1996 1.9 TD). The car I bought had suffered with one crumbling strut top that the previous owner had replaced with a used strut, reusing the original sphere. He then reckons the ride went ‘hard’ all round. The LHM fountain is due to a failed sphere. There's still a little gas in it but not enough to suspend the car or expel the LHM when you lower the car prior to removing the sphere - so when all pressure is removed it feebly empties - hence the fountain. If the thing is totally flat - 1/2 litre of LHM will come out when its removed - but no...

chaps, I have this with my current xantia and have had it before, noticeably with a heavy comfy and slightly missed 605 :)

It isn't a constant vibration at a certain speed, more of a 'wave' of vibration that builds and dies every few seconds, noticeable at 70-80 ish...

I have 3 new tyres, all balanced allegedly.. car has exclusive alloys..

After 96k and at 6 years of age, I decided to treat my C5 (2.0 HDI 110 SX, H3, no sport mode) to a set of comfort spheres. The fronts were original, the rears about 3 years old, and were previously replaced with genuine spheres.

Comfort spheres - what a difference. You still feel some bumps, fewer than the new C5, but it is not quite as...

Hi, the powerbox is a plug in box that intercepts the signals to the fuel injectors.

It came from and cost about £400. It makes a massive difference to the performance especially from 1800 revs. Gives around 17bhp more.

I've had the box fitted for 4 years and over 70,000 miles. Our local authorised Bosch diesel specialist said that the boxes...

Hi all my c5 hdi has all of a sudden has decided to sink after car has stopped for more than 1 hr ,there is no sign of a leak plus when i click the remote to open the car i can hear the motors working for longer than normal so i know something is not right

Gasket has blown and I am not sure if to skim.Slight deviation between 2 and 3 but not major.Current gasket is a 2 notch but I am informed that aftermarket is 3 notch.Many Thanks for all replies

Hi, I've got a '00 Xantia 2.0hdi and it's exhaust pipe has rusted through before it meets the cat (in fact, right on the bottom bend after it comes down from the manifold and then goes straight).

I'd like to avoid replacing the cat, but can't use another piece of pipe because it's on the bend.

I know that for the 1.9td the cat can be replaced...

Oh well, it had to happen some time or other.

I took the car out today, the red stop light started flickering on and off....as i went round corners i noticed it either stayed on or went off....this pointed to the LHM level sloshing around....or basically being low.

The car drove home fine with brakes etc working as normal but after parking up...

The heavy tape bandage although still doing an admirable job is saturated.

The car got me home and will get me to work to tomorrow i hope...when a friend mobile mechanic is going to have a look at it.

I think the plan will be to feed a piece of copper pipe inside the rubber hose with a jubilee...

Hi Guys,

The Hydractive ECU (H5) on my XM isn't getting any power.

I have checked the fuse that is mentioned in the handbook and Ciaran has also advised me to check the ones that act on the deadlock as this caused problems with his suspension also.

After checking the two of these I am not getting any power at all to the ECU.

Hi,
I have a 2002 C5 with a dicky radio/cd player.
It loses signal on the pre-set channels but if it is re-tuned to another channel its ok for a short time then gets crackly again.
I have checked the ariel connection on the car roof and have cleaned it.
Is this a common fault and if so how easy is it to replace the stock radio with another one...

I'm having trouble ensuring I get the correct head gasket set as I know Citroen have at least revised the manifold gaskets on my engine as well as at least one head coolant hose & fitting.

I got the gasket dealer confused so he asked for my reg and that gave him...

I've recently bought a 1996 1.9TD VSX Xantia estate. There's is a little pool of fluid down in a little crossmember area under the hydraulic pump. There is a bit of oil dropping down from the back of my 1.9 TD engine, appears to be up near the manifold but not sure !. Its not much - infact I never have to top up the oil, it just looks messy underneath. Anything that leaks up and around that area that is a diy fix ? . Engine has 208 K on it so I suppose its not too bad !

I have air somewhere on suction side of IP on Xantia 1.9 td with Bosch pump. The clear pip that goes from the side of the main filter is showing bubbles. Obvious canditates? primer bulb?The situation is made worse in that Biodiesel will have softened a hose or two. Can the IP Pump be bled?

My 1.8 Xantia 16v developed a leak in the silencer (it only has one unlike many other Citroens). I purchased a replacement from GSF but found that it emitted an unpleasant booming note which was noisier than the original citroen manufactured silencer, even with its leaks. Can anyone recommend a source of effective silencers for this model?

Anyone know which of the transducers is the emitter and which the receiver? One of mine doesn't work and I'd hazard a guess that it's more likely to be the emitter. Saves me doing both door cards if I get it right first time.

You may find that the turbo can be dismantled in situ and the centre bit with the 2 rotors and the oil feed can be removed alone and substituted. I helped a guy do one on a Land Rover the other day - but the LR turbo is on top of the engine!

I'm wondering what the negatives are against fitting a cone filter direct on the turbo.

I can imagine three, maybe four possible candidates but haven't checked out the reality of them. Just wondered what you all think/know.

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to diagnose the cause of a knocking noise on my '92 1.4 Carb ZX (105k miles on clock)...

The noise only seems to happen under load, on right hand turns. It can occasionally be heard on left handers faintly, but it never occurs off load. The noise is a rhythmic knocking, that appears to increase frequency with road speed....

Hi Guys,

Just to polish this one off, Changing both driveshafts did the trick on this one, had myself convinced it was the diff too!

New shocks all round, 2 new rear wheel bearings, freed rear adjusters, 2 new driveshafts, gearbox oil change and an MOT retest later and the ZX is alive for another year!

Hi, my fathers xantia P reg 1.9TD VSX is over heating, he seems to think that the fans are not running when he is stuck in traffic, it doesn't boil over when he is moving along the motorway only when stationary.

could someone please throw some light on the location of the coolant sensor/sensors that trip the cooling fan/fans please?

My sister's 93 Xantia 1.8 has got a pretty serious oil leak - it's used 7.5l on a recent trip to France (so that's about 1l/200 miles then...). We thought it was the crank seal so she had this and cam seal changed a few months back, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference. Any thoughts? Yes, all the 2.0 HDi's are

Believe there are three different outputs for the 2.0 HDi but all are turbocharged. The 90bhp is not intercooled though, the other two are.

More likely to be two causes than one, I'd have thought. I've blown my cigar lighter (auxiliary socket) fuse many times just by plugging my phone charger into it - it seems to be especially vulnerable to getting short-circuited if you don't push the thing into the socket absolutely straight. I've also found that when the cigar lighter goes off, so...

Does anybody know why we cannot drive our Xantias in the US please? it has always intriged me as to why there is a warnning above the headlamps under the bonnet of my Xantia saying this vechicle is not suitable for use in the USA has it got something to do with the americans hating the French or something else?

As mentioned on another thread my serpentine belt gave up the ghost, got a new one from gfs, my car has a manual tensioner, eventually figured out that to get it too loosen off I had to loosen the bolt in the middle of the wheel, belt went on ok, but when tightening everything up, and turning the engine over the belt keeps coming out of alignment...

Right, I changed the spheres, changed the LHM for Hydraflush and (tried to) bled the brakes.

I followed Jim's instructions step by step. However, on taking the car out for a run it doesn't feel right, not sure if this is me or not. I can't explain how it feels other than not right. Also I believe I may have been supplied the wrong size pipe seal....

Hi, I've got a Xantia 1.9 TD (vsx),I found a drip of water coming from the radiator, at least I think it's the radiator, It's dripping from under the front valance. Can I use Holts radweld to seal this up? It's says on the bottle to pour it straight into the radiator but theres no mention of putting it in the expansion tank.

Can someone tell me how I can tell what type of suspension I have e.g. hydractive or not. I have six spheres as far as I can see. I got told I had hydractive so I put on the three at the back which has improved suspension but what will happen if I have fitted the wrong ones. I am desperate as I have also ordered the front ones now so need to know...

You won't be able to fit the rear suspension accumulator where the anti sink sphere goes as there will be no 4.5mm hole in the sphere to put the pipe in. Although you would be able to put the anti sink sphere in the wrong place!
