Xantia rear sub-frame

Post by Citroen survivor »

I need to replace the rear sub frame on my 98 Xantia 1.9TD Temptation. The dreaded metal worm has had a go at the rear bit behind the wheel where it attaches to the body. This is a Mk1, ie last of the pre facelift. I have been offered a sound rear sub frame from a 2000 hatch-back HDI for £100. Is this the same part and compatible, or have I to look for a Mk 1 version? Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks

I would expect them to be the same, someone else will confirm.

£100 seems a bit steep for a part that hardly ever needs replacing. Where are you? Someone here may have one cheaper?

Many thanks, unfortunately being in Northern Ireland, it rains a lot. It was the first scrap yard I went to. It looked the same, but was unable to look in detail so I thought I would revert to the expert knowledge on this forum for further advice.
There don't seem to be many scrap xantias here, they're still on the reoad and much loved due to the good ride on irish roads.
Many thanks.

Be careful the replacement complete subframe is a normal hydropneumatic
one AND NOT a hydractive as the rear piston rams pipes and spheres are
different even assuming both cars are saloons!

Robert Smart who does visit this forum was breaking a nice looking car and
advertising parts on eBay - I'll ask him if he still has the car as I'd expect
he won't be after that kind of money and he's NI based!

Thanks everyone, it seems that it was wise to consult you all on this. The Mk2 would seem to differ significantly enough from the Mk1 that it is not worth the risk. I was proposing to use all the ancillaries from the existing car and swap everything over, so there would not have been a problem with the size of piston ram pipes etc. All I am after is just the frame.
Andrew, thanks for proposing to contact Robert Smart. It would be brilliant if he still has the car.
Again many thanks,
James

Hi James.

I hope that leads somewhere for you - if not Robert may very well know
somewhere that can supply you what you're after as he's a keen Cit fan
and knows a few guys in your part of the world!

No all hatchbacks (S1 and S2) except activa use part number 5148 73. (new price £583.89)

So the HDI subframe would fit, but try to negotiate the price down a bit (if he doesn't sell it to you, it is only scrap value).

The rear track is the same on all Xantia, the front track varies depending on gearbox type, not with age.

Thanks,
James

Bad luck, the estate is different (part 5148 72), and is even more expensive new. S1 and S2 are the same though.

Ah, right that's not good as the estate IS different to the saloon.

Everything is different from the trailing arms to the hubs and calipers
on the estate as they're beefed up to cope with the expected harder
work meted out to estates.

The car Robert has is a saloon...

Now I'd suggest you could update a saloon to an estate subframe IF the
mounts are the same and there shouldn't really be a big difference though
I wouldn't fit the opposite saloon > estate.

The great shame is I scrapped a s2 estate a fortnight ago and let the
mint rear subframe go on it complete with arms rams and height
corrector much against my better wishes - deadline for space and
couldn't keep everything - you'd have had it all for free with the
shipping/collecting cost... :(

Not sure where this leaves things - a s2 estate non hydractive isn't
rare but not sure about NI? Can it not be welded/repaired - I've done
this with many Gs's?

There's a '97 petrol estate Temptation rear subframe here:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XANTIA-REAR-SUBFR ... 4151604c38

any good?

It's only 30 quid,
so even if you had to pay £70 postage  ,you're still within budget.

I reckon £20ish postage other courier. I've sacked royal snail for DHL - Parcel2go etc for my ebay buying/selling heavy items. It's half price, they come to your door,(for collections)..and it's all trackable included, unlike RM which is extra..

Yep, what Dave said ^^

Parcel2go are just fabulous; not sure about their shipping a full subframe mind.
More a pallet job which can cost ££'s.

Watch also for ABS if it's needed on your recipient car.
