Selling the Xant

Post by Xantia2.0 »

Well, after all the problems plus the cam belt slap I've decided to sell the Citroén. With 11 months MOT, 5 months Tax and no rust on the body, I'm trying to get £1,200 for it. Which means I'll get a £300 profit as I've spent £900 on it (including buying it) so far. And what am I replacing it with you may ask ? Well nothing, I'm going to use busses! NO!! I'm buying a 2003 Ford Focus 1.6 Ghia-X (ALL THE OPTIONS! :D) for £0.00! Here's the story, I work for a taxi company, and last year they upgraded their cars to brand new Peugeot's. And the Focus was the only "old" car to stay, because it had just been through an MOT the week before. And it was only going to be kept till the MOT ran out... And it does so on Monday next week. It was going to be crushed with the scrappage scheme in favour of another new Peugeot, but I've always liked the car, and I always chose it when I was on a shift, so I said I'd buy it. Since I've been working with the company for over 8 years, and the boss knew of the money I was having to spend on the Xantia, he said I could have the Focus for free, since it needs an MOT. I've checked over it before leaving tonight and as far as I know it needs nothing done, though the MOT tester might have something else to say! Whatever it does need, it won't be near as bad as the Citroén. Well, I'm picking it up tomorrow morning at 9am! It'll clock off for the last time at 1am and the key's and V5C will be in the drawer in the office partly signed just needing my details. Ahh, I've always loved Focuses and now I'm finally getting one! Be it a 222,000 mile, 7 year old one with a few dents and scratches! Though the taxi company has serviced it every 10,000 miles and it comes with half decent tyres bolted to it (with original alloys) and a new cam belt 20,000 miles ago.

Well, I'll be off now. Bye!

Yeah, I had 3 people come to see it today and the best offer I had was £850. If I can't get over £1,100 for it I'm not selling. I'll change the cam belt and keep it as a 2nd car. I want rid of it but not if I won't make enough profit. So I may be keeping the Xant by the looks of those offers! I picked the Ford up today and its parked at the bottom of my street as the Citroén is still in the drive way.

Yes I know but after spending 900 Quid on it I need at least a £300 profit or it's not worth selling! I had another tyre-kicker over tonight, expected me to go down to £700! You must joking! My mate (ex mechanic) says he will change the cam belt for me for £100. So I've taken the Citroén down from Auto-Trader and am going to keep it. I can afford to keep two cars, so why not do it I suppose ? The Xant has been 100% reliable for the last 2 weeks so maybe it just needs a chance! I took it for a run earlier to collect my thoughts and it feels so good to drive! The Focuses 1.6 is pokey but that 2.0 is just phenominal! When it goes, it goes! If the weathers nice, I'll take the Citroén over to his house tomorrow and get the belt changed, along with the tensioner and water pump.

So, she lives on!!

I believe you should let the car have a chance! :D

%age wise isn't that £300 profit you're aiming for a bit ambitious on a Xantia
where the market value could be somewhere in the £500 > £800 range?

May be worth keeping an eye on where this goes in price:

Hmm, apart from the front fog lamps, and colour, that's exactly the same as my car. In that case, I've spent £100 more than its ever going to be worth!! I'll keep an eye on that listing.

Just a thought - if you need to replace the rear height regulator then it might be worth giving Pleides a ring - they sell re-conditioned units and will part exchange with your old unit. I did this as mine was leaking hydraulic fluid. My local Cit specialist fitted it and all is well. Doesn't sound as though your unit needs to be replaced - just some lubrication!

Hope you are able to resolve without too much extra cost.

The hydraulics are fine now. It was sitting for 4 days and the rear sat perfectly level.

I know! That's why I'm not selling it anymore. I'm going on holiday tomorrow (till Wednesday), so I'll be taking the Citroén the 600 mile (there and back) journey. If it makes that with no problems I'll definitely be keeping it!!

Unless you buy the right car and buy it cheaply, cars rarely make any monely. For £1200 you could get one of the better Xantia HDis, which do sell well and better than the 2.0 petrols.

I know where your coming from though. When i got my C5 last December, I thought everything was fine with it, but from then till now ive spent well over £1000, not improving the car, but just keeping it how it should be, obviously no repairs add value. Since its a C5 its probably worth half what i paid now too  Still, its having problems again and i can't be bothered spending more money on it, seems a waste of time, but then any car would be the same. You just have to keep on paying the bills

Good lusk with the Focus, im sure you will appreciate the Xantia for its comforts if nothing else. :)
