Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

A bit late for a reply but others might like to know that by super glueing a spacer, washer and nut to the appropriate sides of the upper offside lug on the sump and a spacer, washer and nut to the upper nearside lug of the pump, the pump can be assembled to the car fairly easily. I found that raising the pump on a jack helps if your on your own....

I have a trolley jack and two axle stands, but I'm not sure how to jack the car up to get the stands underneath.

I don't want to jack up each side individually in case I might end up twisting the chassis...

A similar problem I once saw on a Xantia was caused by the aircon compressor front bearing collapsing and causing the pulley/clutch to overheat.

A scrapyard should provide a good replacement compressor privided it is still all fully connected up and no moisture has been allowed to get in.

The old girls handling has gone sour seems to roll more in left hand turns, corners, bends etc.

the bushes have all been replaced in the last 18 months but everything else suspension wise is original and shes now nudging 120k miles.

anybody any ideas?

I had the same problem with the key on my old 306.
I purchased a replacement case off Ebay and swapped it over.
To change it undo the screw in the key (as if replacing the batterys) and the inner parts come out easily and the metal key blade slides out too.

Hi, just DIDN'T buy a 2nd hand 405, for a few reasons, one of which was the yellow dash 'Air Bag' warning lght would not go out.

What is usually the problem?

My previous 405 occasionally had the red light in the steering wheel show when turning. My neighbour suggested this was poor contacts in the wheel.

Your neighbour is right on the steering wheel issue. There is a slipring fitted which wears out over time.
The other issue is usually a bad connection in the connector plugs under the front chairs. This is a wellknown issue on PSA cars and solved by replacing the plugs with a solid soldered wire connection.

Hi, I have a fog light cover missing from the front bumper of my 1999 406 saloon. I was thinking I might get some fog lights to fill the holes, but I am curious as to whether the wires would be there already to allow me to wire them up straight away.

I can see a wire with two small connectors in the space where the hole in the bumper is but not...

Got a Peugeot Partner 1.9 2001. Driving along ok when there was an audible pop from under the bonnet and it cut out. :cry:
I can suck fuel from the feed between the filter and diesel pump. Taken an injector pipe off and there is nothing coming out.

Yes, used the original Lucas injectors as the Bosch ones had a different thread. Also had to turn some sort of vacuum thingy on top of the pump around 180º but it didnt affect the running.
Just finished the job and it runs sweet. I'm a very happy man. :D :D

I guess I'm being really thick here, but I need to bleed the fuel system on my 94 405 1.9TD. It's got the Bosch pump and according to Mr Haynes the bleed screw is either in the injection pump inlet pipe union bolt, or on the fuel filter head. I've also checked the book for the Xantia TD and that says it's on the pump as with the Pug. Well I can't...

Hi,

I have just bought a 1999 406 petrol 1.8. I have notcied the thermostat housing is leaking coolant between the engine and the housing. Is there a gasket that should be used to seal it, or can I fix the leak by removing it and using some sealant on the join?

If so, what sealant should I use?

Just changed both wash pumps on the 405 as a precursor to its upcoming MOT, front one died a week or so ago and the back has been dead for ages.

Front works perfectly, but the back still doesn't deliver any water the pump is working and obviously straining, so I'm guessing there is a block pipe somewhere, how do I get to the pipe to check and fix...

The Clarion radio cassette in my 99 406 HDi only responds to the on/off button and volume up controls on the radio itself.

If I use the stalk control I get all stalk controls (Station search; volume down (but not up !); CD selection from autochanger etc). As this car is I think multiplexed I am thinking this may not be simple.

Any suggestions?

I just bought my first Peugeot, a '99 406 HDI (110) 2.0L. It goes pretty well and is quiet at speed, but at idle it sounds like my grandad's old Fergy tractor. It holds an easy 100mph on the motorway fully loaded. There is no smoke, no oil usage and the exhaust is clean. Turbo seems fine and temp is stable.

Ouch! I hope not - much more expensive and a bigger job too I'd have thought, as gearbox would have to come off.

Wouldn't a flywheel problem show up at speed as the engine would be unbalanced? This one is smooth, even at idle, just noisy.

i've got a P plate 406 td which has got the 1905cc engine--just seems a bit slow to me--it's totally reliable and at 162000 miles it really owes me nothing-is there a way of upping the speed a little-just doesn't have that zip that my old 405 had--i've read you can fiddle with the egr?? i'm a bit clueless but if somebody can tell me what to look...

It's definatly worthwhile checking all the pipes are intact, the boost pipe to injection pump causes a massive drop in performance when its split, not enough fuel to match the air, and because of this, boost is lower too!

There are simple tweaks you can carry out to the pump to improve overall performance, and still get good mpg. My tweaked...

I've just got a 94 405 TD with aircon. I've gopt what seems to me to be a weird fault with the heating. I can only get hot air from the two vents at either end of the dash. Even if I set the temp control all the way over to red all I can get to screen or feet is cold (maybe luke warm), but at the same time I can get hot from the aformentioned...

1) the coldstart problems witk grey/whit4e snoke is because of air leaks in thew fuel lines. No doubt on that - at all. PERIOD. Dont try to talk away this fact as there is no other sensible explanation.

2) the black smoke is an overfuelled condition. The engine gets too much fuel in relation to air - or has restrictions in the air...

OK Pug boys, I have skipped in here from the Citroen bit for a bit of freeby advice!!!

Hi
Every time it rains the front passenger footwell resembles a boating lake in my 205! It's a 92 model with the vacuum sunroof fitted. Could it be a drain tube's kinked/blocked/split or wrongly routed?

Can't see any water staining or marks on the door trims etc.
Looks like I'm going to have to take up the carpets and trims to see if I can trace...

Thanks for the info.The car's been garaged over the winter but it's going on the road soon. I might take it out in heavy rain and have a squint about,see what I can trace. It's only the front passenger footwell that floods so I'm guessing it's coming in round the door area.

Just incase anyone is interesred,I have now removed the heater plugs and fitted new (the old ones checked out ok) did a compression check and all cylinders gave a reading of approx. 400 psi.
does anyone know what the readings should be?
I now have an anti pollution fault coming up,will this effect the running of the car? and still got the starting...

I don't know what they should be, but if they're all about the same number, then I would guess the compression is either ok, or bad on all cylinders ( unlikely :wink: ).

Seems to me like there may be a temperature sensor issue here somewhere ?

When i start my HDi from cold it misses for around 3 - 5 seconds.

Once this has passed it runs fine all day, but sounds horrid when it starts.

When the engine is cold and just started it shakes through the car, so i am pretty sure its missing on at least one cylinder.

I have been offered a set of injectors cheap, but the numbers on the caps are...

I have a 306 diesel with 100k.
When the radiator cap is on tight I loss coolant out the over flowpipe after only a few moments of running, also if the engine is cold and not running and a squeeze a coolant pipe coolant comes out the over flow pipe.
The system doen't seem to be over pressureised as the pipes arefar from hard.
I have tried bleeding...

Car is a pug 406 lx 99 T-reg with ac.
Engine had classic Head gaskit symptoms, pressurising coolant pipes, mayo in the oil, loosing a little water, water/oil mist in the oil fill up.

So I had the HG changed and the head was replaced as it couldnt be skimmed.

Now the engine is back up and running and the top coolant pipe is still getting...

ANother update had the car running for an hr today.

The fans kick in on a steady speed when the ac is turned on, they go to high speed when the temp sensor is unplugged. But they dont kick in when the rad/engine gets hot.

The rad is hot all over and the engine is running fine had it running for a 30 mins, and checked it was bled and again that...

My 406 had rubbing on the rear drivers side wheel, used a cable tie and the local garage to use their puncture repair tool to drill a hole in the wheel arch lining, and cable tie it back.

Jim, reason one is more spacious then the other, is a simple matter of fuel inlet pipe from the filling cap, as for the reason that it starts rubbing is beyond...

My 1993 309 1.6 Auto (XU5M single point injection/cat) is starting to creak from the rear suspension at times. From reading other posts I suspect the rear arm bearings have become dry and/or rusty, although I can't detect any unusual camber or excessive free play. I'd like to replace the complete rear suspension assembly with a secondhand...

hello there,

My colleague Paul has a '95 'M' 405 1.9 TD with a heater that won't heat.

It appears that hot water is going into and out from the matrix as both inlet and oulet pipes are hot. The fan will blow air through all the vents as per the ventilation control position.

Do any of you kind folks have any suggestions for him?

Is there any way i can by pass the dash board on the radiator fans as they do not come on to cool the engine when it gets hot.

Last person to own it, called out a auto electrician who wired up a On / off switch inside the bonnet, this is very impractical when the engine starts to heat up when just idling.

According to my Haynes Diesel engine book, the notches at the edge of the gasket are the thickness (3 being thickest). The ones in the centre relate to engine size, and a single notch is for a 1.7 engine, whilst 2 is for a turbo engine (although this book only covers the 1.7TD engine) - the Xantia book just says they relate to engine size :roll:...

I have just aquired a 309 1.4 petrol . It has an oil escape which comes up through the dipstick..... I am assuming that it has a buildup of pressure in the crankcase. Is there a breather that could be blocked or am I looking at an internal problem. The engine is not smokey and doesnt seem to spew loads of oil either from the exaust or the dipstick...
