The steering on my estate sometimes goes a little stiff when turning from straight ahead then frees up, I'm hoping its the pump rather than the rack, any suggestions?
Thanks
Peter

Re: 406 hdi steering
UJ's in the column possibly ?
As you're 'turning' the column not the assistance, any stiffness here would be felt rather than reduced by the action of the assistance in most cases.
You could try jacking the front end up and turning the wheels by hand slowly from lock to lock, although quite stiff like this as you know you're compressing the hydraulics yourself doing this you may be able to feel any oddness as it should be reasonably smooth.
The last car I had do this (intermittently but very annoying it almost locked for a fraction of a second so I know what you mean) was a non PSA vehicle (a Corsa of all things) with that curious electric column affair. I think the 107 / C1 has this setup, seems common on newer small cars now and that was the motor at fault in that. Not sure if that is any help or not though.
Initial thought is one of the UJ's though for your case.

Thanks, I know the u/j is a possibility but it doesn't do it all the time but I could try lubricating it.

That's exactly how the Xantia feels when the UJ is tight, Peter. Just had to lubricate mine again - have drowned it (and me!) in oil this time, and steering is eerily light by comparison to before!
