205 steering column removal

Remove (not just slacken) the appropriate pinch bolt on the bottom U/J, if you want to leave the joint on the rack and remove just the upper shaft, then remove the upper pinch bolt on the U/J.
Think it can be got at by prising the big rubber grommet out from around the shaft, but be warned its a bugger to get back properly.

Haynes is refering to an older version of this engine (plastic timing covers held on with spring clips) later ones have bolt on covers, you don't have to take the pulley off on this one.
The engine mounting is not only bolted to the head but also dowelled to it on the TD's, so there's a bit more fun for you, retaining the evil tensioner spring or...

Certainly do the oil and filter change, but I would forget about flushing. If the present oil is old and very dirty, I would change it now, then change it again after a few hundred miles. Also change the air filter and fuel filter. Put in the Redex straight away. Unless you can be sure the cambelt has been changed in the last 30000 miles, you...

405 diesel cambelt change

Timing is set by screwing 8mm bolts through the holes in pulleys and into their corresponding threaded hole, into the cylinder head for the camshaft pulley, and the injection pump mounting bracket for the pump pulley.
Note that there are two holes in the injection pump pulley, only one needs be used for timing but they MUST BOTH be aligned with...

Check all the cabling/pipework near/behind the sections that you welded. It's possible that a cable got melted.
Also check *all* the earth wires attached to the engine are bolted down tightly and making good contact.
Then, I'd double check that no pipes/cables have become squashed between engine and chassis and also double check the wiring. Also...

drop the back seats down climb in the boot look at the locking mechanism , you might be able to carefully screwdriver it open
or undo the bolts holding the lock on either the hatchback/bootlid
or frame once open you can examine the lock for the fault

I know some of these had a tendancy to go out of sync. Dealers at the time were replacing keyfobs to fix the problem.
I'm not sure if they can be resynched in the same way as the Citroen units. And I can't remember the exact procedure for them. It's on teh Citroen board somewhere though.

Can anyone specify a procedure to determine the reason why the central locking on my son's 306 does not work. All 3 doors will lock on the turn of the key but none locks centrally either by key nor the remote key fob. All we've done so far is put new batteries in the key.

If it's similar to the BX, and it's likely to be, the joint will be held by a circlip. Give the joint a smack, outwards to release it. Hold the drive shaft,or it might pull from the gearbox.

you have 2 options,take the van to a peugeot dealer to have the keys programed as you need the diagnostic computer to do this,you will also need the 4 digit transponder code.
option 2- tape one of the old keys to the recever round the ignition barrel under the steering column covers which means the imobiliser will unlock as soon as the ignition is...

I have a 405 1.8 GL petrol and when accelerating on the motorway there is the sound of a gurgal . A bit like when you suck through a straw whne there's not much coke in the glass! It seems to me it could be fuel starvation or something but the engine isn't hesitant or anything. Anyone got any ideas?

The twin fans are designed to come on at different temps. But i think the passenger side is the first one to come on (at about 97 c) and the second kicks in at around 105. you are only seeing one fan on because the temp is only hot enough to start the former.

Chances are that it's sucking in air to the fuel lines. Check every union that you undid to replace the filter. You could also put in some new copper washers on the banjo unions.

Give Andyspares a ring. I'm pretty sure they keep the seals for the driveshafts. Although the two sides are different, the same seals are used in a whole range of Cit/Pug boxes.

Belt change is usually about 3 hours, so reckon on about £130 - 150. Water pump should be inspected, but might not need changing - depends on the mileage - you'd probably be looking at at another £80 - £100 to change the water pump as well. What type of pump is fitted to the car?. The Lucas/CAV Rotodiesel DPA (?) type leaks from the top of the pump at the base of the large spring because of the load of the spring wearing through the aluminium top plate. The Bosch does not have this problem
Check with your local Lucas pump specialist, as I am sure there is a replacement top plate...

Can I use the caliper carrier for Xsara VTS 2,0, on my -93 Peugeot 306 XN 1,4.
Pug 306 GTI and Xsara 2,0VTS uses the same caliper.

I am about to change brakes on my -93 306 1,4. I shall replace the 247mm with 283mm from a GTI/S16. I have the discs, pads and Lucas caliper(54). But I have problems finding the right Yoke or caliper carrier/bracket. Anyone done this? I have a part number from a Xsara VTS 2,0 00004404 39. Anyone know if I can use that one

Are you sure that the alternator is turning over correctly. Check that the belt is not slipping. It should be very tight.

I have a Peugeot 106 xnd diesel 1527, M reg.
My wife was going to work when it just stopped and wouldent start at all.
Turned out that 3 wires had been damaged and had to be replaced along with the stop solenoid.....that cost £70.
It was ok for 2 days then it went belly up again and the ignition switch packed in and burnt the starter motor out....

Hi all,
My father has just bought a R reg Pug 306 Estate and is planning to takeout the 1.9D engine and replace it with the 1.9TD out of his recently written off ZX.
I have heared some rumbilings that it wont fit because the engine mounts are different?
Is there anything i need to look out for?

306 suspension grease points

Many years ago one trick we used to do with the proper mini's 11/1300's (remember them!) and metro's was to drill a hole and attach a grease nipple to the rear suspension arms of the mini, and then fill with grease to prolong the bearing life.
I think this trick will also apply to any vehicle with a trailing arm set up, any thoughts?.

Difficult gear selection

See if you can get your car up on ramps and check the linkages going from the bottom of the gear lever running forward to the gearbox. Can't remember the exact setup on the 306 but on my last 106 I had a bush pop out and gearchange was very difficult until it was fixed. They deteriorate after a while and not too difficult to replace with new ones...

I would suggest a local motor factor for the hose if it standard internal diameter.
Some hoses on peugeots have different internal diameters at either end!, so it is wise to check this out. The simplest method is insert a bolt of a known diameter into the hose to check the internal diameter.
Other than the motor factors look for the peugeot owners...

Anyone know where I can get coolant hoses for my Pug 205 Diesel - apart from a Peugeot dealer?
I need the thin long one which goes from the expansion tank to the radiator, and a rubber hose which goes from the metal section above the crankshaft pulley to behind the block.
GSF only sell top hoses for the 205.
Bet I'd be looking at £35-£40 to get...

Having been just a little slow off the mark today, I missed out on a '00 Xantia HDi 110 that I wanted by 2 hours. Having a look around some of the other cars on this dealer's forecourt though, I spotted a '99 (V reg) 406 GLX in the corner. A quick enquiry revealed that it was an HDi 110 with 57K miles. I didn't go any further than getting the keys...
