Pug 1.8 405 1993.
I noticed whilst checked my brake pads that my drivers side outer cv joint rubber boot has a split in it and squirting grease everywhere. I looked in haynes and it says remove the drive shaft to fit another one. Is it really this hard or can it be done any easier? Surely I can just remove the disc and pull off the old one and slip on a new one?
If not what sort of a cost would this be at a garage?
Cheers.

David,
Sorry, the only (sensible) way is to take the drive shaft out of the hub and split the CV joint. About 1 hour's labour at your local garage, plus the boot. You can buy a split boot which you glue over the joint, but they're a fiddle to fit, and unless you are fastidiously clean they fall apart. If you're not geared up to remove the hub nut, I'd get your garage to do it. Worth doing sooner rather than later, because if you run the joint dry it will be new shaft time.....

I had to replace a driveshaft because of a split rubber boot
if you take off the wheel exposing the caliper there {on my car}is two bolts holding the caliper to the shock absorber assemblly when released push the driveshaft towards the gearbox hold the driveshaft
and get your assistant to try and pull the hub off the splined end
Don`t pull the driveshaft out of the gearbox unless you want lots of oil all over the ground. if the caliper slides off the shaft stand it on something keeping the tension off the flexible brake hose.Bingo
remove old boot tighten up inboard side then woosh in full sachet of
grease caliper/hub back on pull the boot onto the hub side make secure tighten everything up finished

Pugs are reknowned for their very unfriendly CV joint gaiters. You can do as the above and remove the driveshaft, or get a bellows tool to stretch a new gaiter over the CV joint. My local pug specialist does it this way and charges £100 for both sides, which I think is reasonable given what a pig of job it is.
