Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Chaps, I dont know a great deal about this engine...

My friend's seems to have just lost its cambelt tensioner... are these engines interference? it wont start now so guessing they are..

I will compression check later before we make a decision.. I told them to get car home and we can arm ourselves with knowledge rather than go straight to garage...

Just gone out to the shops in my '93 405 Hunter TD estate, and the fuel gauge resolutely refuses to move from it's resting place, well below empty . There is definitely at least 2/3 of a tank in it...

It's the type of instrument cluster that has the fuel gauge between the revcounter and speedometer. I will go and top up the tank at the filling...

The tank sender unit is a very simple resistor element on which a slider is pushed up/down by a float.
Since your low level warning lamp is working, the float is also working as it is the float that makes a contact when it comes near the tank bottom.

Have a go like the desciption above, looking for any weak connections, as any added resistance...

Heres a one for you tech boys.
I have a 2001 406 1800 auto thats playing up. I had a problem not long ago when I went through a deep puddle which cut the engine but after a while it fired up ok then this happened.
At first it would lose drive while driving and would sometimes disengage when standing at lights but would always run in reverse ok....

My b in laws 406 2.1td,R reg i think,has sprung a leak.From what he says,theres a pipe coming off the power steering pump,metal,then crimped into a rubber pipe,about 2ft long.Its leaking at the crimped joint.
The question is,once he(or me :lol: )have replaced the pipe,does the system need bleeding :?:
never had to change one before,but i assume...

I've noticed the radiator on my 405 is looking corroded and is losing some water. It's a '96 1.9TD and I was thinking of just replacing it. My question is, do I need a radiator specifically for the 405, or would a radiator for any car with an XUD9 be suitable? E.g. could I pick up a radiator for a 1.9TD 306 for example? From my searching, it seems...

Not easy cars to work on, but as you say can be done without taking the front end off.

If it's contaminated use a can of wynns pro coolant flush, it will search everything out and make sure no oil/rust deposits are left. Ignore instructions, put it in, drive a week, then flush out at least 2 or three times. If you can't drain/flush through the...

My 1996 2.0l 406GLX starts ok but as soon as you try to rev it it drops to a sort of hunting tickover - about 800 revs - I managed to roll it home on tickover but it wont rev. (nowhere near a 3000rpm limp-home state).

Edit - Now it's cold it starts but can't maintain a tickover

All warning lights go out but the service light symbol will...

Our '96 406 produces a gurgleing sound when it rains. the sound seems to be coming form the sunroof area. has anyone else come across this problem and what would be a suitable solution? There is also a watery sound from the B pillar on the nearside at motorway speeds in the rain, is this related?

Welding wire is also meant to be pretty good for this. Must do my 405 with it...it's funny how you see a lot of older cars with gaffer tape around the sunroof to stop water leaks; most people don't realise the rubber seal is actually designed to let water in - the drain holes (should) take it away!

I've spent the morning replacing brake hoses on our Pug 306. Three of them have gone well, but the last front one is proving difficult. The pipe union to flexible hose is about to lose its flats and round off. This is in spite of using a pipe union spanner. Has anyone got a bright idea for its removal?

Hi All

Cable is going as it is 'twanging' on up/down, garage confirmed.

Looking at door notice all screws are star type (my daughters VW was so easy!) Which is best a set of star attachments for rachet or go with screw drivers?

Also to save on buying Haynes can anyone give a sequence for taking door apart.

1999 1.8 406.

Every so often I get a Low Brake Fluid warning showing on the display on my 406. I don't have low fluid though - the brake fluid is full to the brim.

I have cleaned the contacts on the switch but it still occurs every so often. Would the warning occur for any other reason, say fluid is old, other braking problems etc?

I've just purchased a 406 L 1.9 turbodiesel saloon, 1997 model year. The car has done 230,000 miles.

Upon collecting the car today, it started fairly easily from stone cold but blew out a fair bit of blue smoke. Driving the car home (15 miles on A and B roads) indicated that the smoke was still present when idling at the end of the journey, and...

I have just bought a 306 1,9 td (P reg) for a friend. I need to sort the a/c out as it's not working.

The concerning part for me is that I have found the vss wrapped around a water pipe and not plugged into the gearbox.

I just put a post about my speedo, but I also a few other issues with my car…..i did get the GLX which is full of electronic toys… that go wrong!

One of my back doors won’t open. I can get to all the leavers inside the door, but pulling or pushing on them in various combinations wont open the door! I’ve sprayed it in WD40, but that didn’t seem to...

Since you most likely need a new doorlock unit anyway, then get one from the scrappers, learn how it works and then figure out how you unlock it from inside the door. Until then be sure to keep the failing lock wetted with plusgas or something else especially suited for rust loosening. WD40 can be used but is too widespread a tool to be really...

Hi,

I've just bought a 106 with no keys and the ign smashed, is there a way to make it fire up, without replacing all of the bits? Can I put a supply to the fuel pump and get it going.

It cranks OK.

It will be possible to feed the solenoid but you may need to strip the pump security cover off.

That will be far from easy for obvious reasons :twisted: In the case of a Bosch pump the armour can only be removed if the pump is removed from the engine. I would imagine the Lucas pump would also need to be removed as well.

I have an intermittent problem with my speedo. It just stops working for anywhere between 2 seconds and 5 mins. It has been doing it more and more over the last 2 years, but now happens about once every journey. It also puts the engine into a reduced power mode, which is a real problem when I have a lot of stuff in or on the car!

Well i have a 406 turbo exec. it had the faulty intermittent speedo problem, but mine was a faulty Bitron unit located behind the glove box, but from what i know, the HDI doesn't have this unit, as the only 2 cars in the 406 range that do, are the 2.0l turbo petrol (my engine) and the 406 coupe.

You could look for it, but i doubt...

Hello All,

I have just got a 2001 (X reg) 306 1.4 LX (not sure which engine code this is?), which jerks when pulling off and doesn't feel as smooth as I thought it should when accelerating.
The car used to be my mums and it's done this for quite a while, it has 90k on the clock and a full Peugeot dealer service history.

OK I removed and cleaned mine yesterday (before I saw your reply).

It was at about E5 - it brings in air from the left side whereas the air normally comes in from the airbox on the right side. A pipe comes off the airbox onto the ICV and there's also a 4 pin connector. Does yours have this air pipe? Because on my car C12 is the throttle...

Picked it up today, 1996 1.9 D ( turbo?) it appears to have an intercooler, but I feel no turbo boost, and it's pretty sluggish.
It as various other problems, such as central locking that unlocks itelf as soon as you lock it, radio don't work, slow to turn over when starting, ( I think this maybe an earth strap problem) the elec. windows & sunroof...

Did a little more today, got the cold start fast idle adjusted correctly, and I think that the glow plugs may be faulty, as it's a little lumpy on the cold start, as it had been adjusted to start and run at too high RPM when I got it, and I take it that this was a mechainics bodge to save the previous owner a few bob... :roll:

Hello,

I've got a '96 405 with the infamous leaky sunroof. I've done my best to clear the drain pipes, I've used a length of plastic washing line, i've tried blasting them with some gas from a propane canister, and rinsing through with hot soapy water. As far as I can see, there is no obstruction on the pipes themselves but I still get water...

Oh really? So is the seam just sealed with mastic normally? I was worried it was a weld and they were corroded underneath or something. Filled 'em in with some new mastic and problem solved. Honestly, this car had so many leaks, I've taken half the interior trim out chasing them. I've had to replace both rear light clusters, fit new boot lock...

My 306 started coughing and spluttering a while ago. It steadily got worse and now won't start at all. Over the past few months the fuel filter and glow plugs have been changed.
I posted this topic at the start of last month, but got fed up with piddling around with the car so I left it.
After leaving it for a few weeks I had a go at starting it...

You have an air leak which is causing the fuel in the fuel line to run back to the tank.

If you have a Bosch pump, the leaks can be anywhere from the leak-off pipes (small ones daisy-chained between injectors), the line from the pup to the filter, the filter body itself, the pipe to the priming bulb and the priming bulb itself. They do perish....

My girlfriend has a 405 turbo diesel. Its got ABS. Has had an intermittent problem with the brakes - when slamming them on in an emergency sometimes very little happens!!! Slightly alarming...... occurred very rarely, kind of felt like the servo had run out of vacuum

This happened once or twice and I checked the servo for correct operation a few...

I changed the front discs and pads yesterday and the cables to the brake pad warning light hand been cut ,so i joined them together and taped them up on taking the car for a run the hand brake light would not go off and then this morning it went on intermitently. Are the two items linked or do i have a seperate problem?

well yes in theory that should be the case but in order to push back the pistons i had to disconnect the flexi pipe which expelled some rather yucky fluid so this evening with help from no.1 son we bled the front brakes until some nice clean fluid appeared so that part of the saga sorted
will have a look at the other over the weekend :)

Hi all

Just bought a 406 HDI 90 with water leak, traced it to the thermostat housing.

I have put everything back except the turbo pipes and now it won't start!

Turns over, fuel is is priming but nothing.

Also I noticed the immobiliser icon on the dash does not come on although the bulb is working? I cannot remember weather it did before ony...

I've got a year 2000 peugoet 206 LX. Over the last few weeks the remote key has been hit and miss. It would stop working, but if I locked or unlocked the door manually it would start to work again. However, its now totally stopped working.

forgive my ignorance, I have a 1996 406 1.9td, does it have a fuel pump or is the fuel sucked up via the injector.
I only ask because I am tempted to use biodiesel or veggie oil - I understand that all 1.9td's have bosch injector pumps which are apparently more favourable to bio/veggie fuel.

We just picked up a 1999 106 Zest 2 diesel which has no keypad immobiliser or central locked/blipper. When we bought the car it came with only one key and obviously we would like to have a spare.

With that in mind we went to get one cut today to be told that this key will have an integrated chip for th immobiliser system? Anyone know if this is...

Update to the thread.

We found the key specialist on Saturday and he supplied a new key and set up the immobiliser code for £27.50 all in! :P

So if anyone needs one done and is in the Salisbury area he is on the corner around by the bus station :D

Hi,

I think my low side pressure is too high after top up, pump cuttin in and out frequently (3 seconds or so then it cuts out for 10) and air not that cold. at about 20c outside I'm getting 35psi low side at idle full air con on.

Anyone got any low side figures, say for 1,500rpm etc? My data book only tells me the capacity. It's a 96 phase 2...

Hi Steve,

Agree about the fill, but too much in the system or too little at service time should make a difference, if rpm, load, humidity and temperature are taken into account.

I re-ran the pressure test at 1,500rpm and found it a little high, reduced pressure and now it seems to be working great without the compressor cutting out too often....

I have a 405 TD (M-1994) that has a redlight that comes on as you switch on the ignition but then goes off after a couple of seconds.

I noticed today that it came on whilst driving, notably cornering, and I don't mean on 2 wheels!

Any suggestions please, I could find nothing in Hayes or the owners handbook.

It was the connector under the drivers seat, with a small pair of pliers I twisted the blade part of the connector which was enough for a good contact to be made -

The easy rule of thumb if trying to identify between a Lucas/CAV/rotodiesel and a Bosch VE is look at the rotor head. That's the cast iron bit where the injection pipes attach. It's a square casting on the Bosch and a round casting on the Lucas.

Please note that just having a bosch pump does not mean your car will run as well on oil as diesel,...

Hi, has anyone got any ideas if a 2.1TD will fit in a 205? Saw ace footage of a 205 multi on youtube that had this combo but it had been tuned a bit(!) Seems to go like hell!

I've got a couple of 205s, a GTI and a D turbo but also have an old XM with the above engine,plus its an early one with the mechanical Bosch pump, so no electrics to worry...

There's a reason for that mate, the fuse can be placed in either position, 1 is permanent live, the other is ignition live.

Injector cleaner did actually clean up a little hesitance/barely detectable misfire the first millisecond when you blip the throttle.

However made no difference to throttle response which is still squidgy.

I am going to have a look at a 307 HDi tomorrow as I am hoping to replace my 306.
One question I have is can the passenger airbag be turned off by the means of a key switch, as can be done in the 306?

Hello,

I need to raise the limiter from about 4500 to 5100rpm. The car has a Lucas pump. I tried turning a screw on the top left (or is it right) of the pump but that adjusted the idle. There is another screw but has a tamper mechanism (small chain) on it. Is that it? Can anyone point me to a pic of a Dturbo engine bay?

No point raising the rev limit unless its modded, they will rev that high but there is no point, i never need to rev mine over 4500rpm, power drops sharply beyond that point but its not heavily tweaked.

Does anyone know where I can get decent biodiesel in NI. Prefferably in the Ballymena and Belfast areas, and current price please if poss.

I have tried Biofuels NI which I was told was either on the Castlereagh Rd, Belfast or on the Comber Road, Carryduff but I can't find them.

hunters filling station in ballynahinch keep good stuff but it is up to 96 a ltr and they tend to run out very quickly the garage at temple crossroads does sell it but they have had some bad stuff recently so steer clear.There is also supposed to be a place on the Belfast Bangor road but i have never come across it yet.

My 306 Diesel, non turbo started coughing and spluttering a couple of weeks ago. It's steadily got worse until yesterday. Now it's almost impossible to start and keep running. If started, it runs very roughly for a few seconds before stalling.
Over the last two months, the glow plugs and fuel filter have been changed, any ideas anyone???

That's a bit of an odd problem.

This needs a bit of locical tracing now. The first thing to check is that the pump is receiving an adequate amount of fuel. This can be done by slipping off the feed pipe to the pump and squeezing the primer bulb and ensuring plenty of fuel issues with each squeeze and that fuel keeps flowing with each squeeze....

Hi all,recently bought an expert van instead of using the estate for work,its a 1999 1.9 td which drives spot on except for 3rd gear.If you engage 3rd slowly it doesnt crunch but under normal driving it will.

Feels like the syncro to me but never had this problem before with my pugs so any advice is welcome

Could do with some suggestions here as in a bit of a fix. I was replacing the dics on Dad's 306 today, completed first side fine. However, on the near side when tightening the lower bolt fixing the yoke to the hub, it simply carried on twisting. It seems the threads have stripped on the hub. If there was a coil on it, it sounds like some herbert has been there before and stripped the thread, and then had it helicoiled - not very well. I think your only option is to remove the replace the hub - you might be able to take it to the engineering shop and get the hole re-coiled, but getting a SH unit is probably just as easy.
