Jumping out of gear !

Post by Newby »

Hi everyone a few weeks back the clutch went on my 307. I had it replaced. My problem now is it is starting to jump out of 5th gear. Any ideas what it could be? Why 5th gear? Thanks in advance for your help.

Weak or broken detent springs maybe.

I've not seen a BE box jump out of fifth personally, I've seen on that would not select 5th at all ever though.

Assuming gearbox / engine mountings are good ?

Neither have I. Could be that its not fully engaging, does it feel as though it is? The good new is that if its the actual gear assembly that's at fault you can access it without removing the gearbox but if its a selector fault not so easy.

did this occur straight after the clutch was replaced,

if so maybe its a selector linkage/cable not been set up properly on re/assembly,

another though could be wrong or not enough gear oil was put in

Hi Newbie, spotted this while browsing and decided it was time to sign up seeing as I've just had the same on a 405 (still BE3 box) that I got a couple of weeks ago.

Seeing as yours has happened just after a clutch change, there's a good chance that it is the linkage related but, if not, apparently there was a known (though fairly rare) problem with 405's developing this fault from wear of the synchro splines leaving angled faces where they engage with the hub. The effect was that they'd engage but, as soon as power was applied, they'd pop out again.

The good news is that, if it is the hub, you can change it with the box still in the car - it takes about 45 minutes. Just done mine and wrote it up on another forum here (starts at the 9th post on the page):
