There are a limited number of reasons a diesel won't start: Fuel, preheat or compression. How do you know which is your problem?

1. When does the fault occur - cold and / or hot?
Cold only: Likely to be glow plugs (but see 2)

xantia lights

I have a 93 Xantia . The lights on dip are dull. Is it possible to remove the silver cover over the dip bulb to increase light and does this work? Also do bigger wattage of bulbs help? Already cleaned lens but this has made little difference.Any advice would be great.

The problem you have is due to early Xantia's having a poor lens design. Later models, say 95 onwards have a different pattern in the glass.

To improve matters you can either buy the later lens to fit to your present lights or alternatively get a pair of lights from a breakers yard.

BX Rear Tail Lights Dimming When Indicators Flashing

Hi Folks,

The above fault occurs when there is a poor earth.

Even when cleaning all the earth points the problem was still slighty evident.

The cure was to install another earth lead from the off side rear cluster to an existing earth point.

Photo below shows how i did it, and the problem was cured.

This fault is an MOT failure..

When I ran a TZD, I did this job exactly as you describe, however to fit the gauge, I removed the ashtray, detached the rear part of it and cut a suitable hole in the front face. I then glued the ashtray front back into the dash. In the early '90's, diesel BX's were very popular as Spanish taxis. They all had an after-market temp. gauge fitted.

Cleaning BX Height Correctors

When dismantling and cleaning the height correctors, ,the orifice discs somtimes get overlooked as they are not obvious.
There are 7 spacers, 8 discks and one screwed plug that holds them in place.
A tool is required, can be made from a rod or tube, cut a slot in one end to remove the plug (Normal Thread),

Want a low cost sound deadening solution? Go to a DIY shop and buy yourself a couple of rolls of AquaSeal roof flashing. I used this stuff on my door cards and it works.
OK so it's not as great as stuff like Dynamat but it does help kill some noise and it only costs around £7 for a 2m roll.

Xantia II fuel filter (petrol)

There I was, screwdriver at the ready to undo the jubilee clips holding on my fuel filter so I could renew it. But waiting for me were marvellous moulded plugs where you just press the clip, pull and off it comes. Off and on in 25 seconds. Bracket screwed back on and job done in no time. Not even a jack with suspension set on high.

I have a 306 with a automaticaly adjusting clutch cable.
The clutch was very stiff. Following some advice I squirted oil down the cable at the back of the peddle to ease it off.

On my 405, I had exactly this problem, and I added a relay to the circuit, so that the ignition switch and wiring did not have to take the 15 amps or so that the solenoid requires. Had no more problems for 7 years now.

I have been using Millers oil (multi fleet) 10w40 for a lomg time now and millers recommended changing the oil at 15K instead of 6K after sampling oil from the engine. Never had any problems with any cars running Millers. This is on a fleet of taxis!! if they can cope surely anything can.

BX Front Strut Return Pipes - Repair

If you find that the interior light flashes on and off at will and that the door open light comes on on the dash, try the boot light stop. It works loose and has a bad fitting in the boot lid. These usually need a press to get them out, but if the press wont budge them, try and remove the ballraces and inner tracks of the bearing so all you are left with is the outer track pressed into the hub carrier. (This is after removing the hub btw)

A real quick way to separate ZX balljoints is to get a length of metal bar (I use an old antirollbar)and slide it over the top of the arm so that the other end is under the floor of the car. Put a leather glove over that end to avoid any damage. Then just pull down on the bar at the end sticking out by the bottom arm, joint usually separates...

What if you have a heater that will not turn off fully, and you live in warmer climate(BX 19TRI), seems one has to dismantle half the car to get at it?

Knowing the BX heater valves propensity to stick and seize when not used, as it's now summer it may not be used again until the autumn.
I just turn mine to full heat for a few minutes every day and then back to cold again- that way when winter comes at least it will still be working!!!!!

ZX 16V ACAV Vacuum Fix

For anyone that has a ZX 16v..The little ACAV vacuum pipes snap like a Kit-Kat, and no glue known to man, can fix them.
Well I fixed mine today, and very cheaply too.
Just buy a length of 1/4 brake pipe, about £5 - £6.
Cut a short length 20mm or so.
Drill the Vacuum, 4.8mm drill, where the pipe snapped off. Carefull not to go through the other...

Cat litter oil sucker.

If you have a cat don't throw away all the old cat litter it's great for draining oil in to from the sump. Most council sites will take it away aswell.
But please never try to pour 3.5ltrs of oil in to the cat or screw on an oil filter.

ZX Parcel shelf cords

Repair to your local haberdasher and procure a metre of shearing (sp?) elastic for the princely sum of 15p or so. Cut two 44 cm lengths.
Prise out the two guides from the parcel shelf 'tube' and separate the two halves of each.
Remove traces of old elastic from each cord, and attach new pieces by binding with thread and blobbing some PVA glue on...

Rust Inhibitor

Hi All,
If you are doing a body repair and you run out of Rust Inhibitor, just use pure lemon juice...
Brush well in and let it dry, wipe off with a clean cloth moistened with paint thinners, then apply the primer etc...

faulty plip !

I dont know if this will work with any one else but I have had a remote central locking plip on a 05 N reg xantia that ceased to work.
After re soldering a few dry / cracked joints it still was not working, but I found that if I only put one battery in instead of two it worked ok as long as I did not use it over and over again. Hope this helps...

Correct me if i'm wrong but, the only difference I know of is the combustion chamber is smaller, i.e. closer to the piston. If not, the TD must have slightly smaller pistons, in which case there'll be no difference.

Hi,
I have a Peugeot 205 Diesel that doesn't like starting when hot. I have read that an aftermarket relay can help.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Head lining cleaning.

This works great but remember to use the doesage stated or even a little less. Cos if u dont you will be cleaning the headlining for weeks trying to get the white stains out. And yes im speaking from experince but i now own a Pug 405 with probably the cleanest headlining in the world (well in places).

If your head lining needs to be cleaned try using that new Oxy clean. Put the doseage required in to a spray bottle and spray on to the lining. Let it work it self in for about 5 mins then simply wipe off. It brought up my ZX head lining like new and even removed the previous 10 years worth of cigarette smoke (none smoker my self).

Just a quick tip. When bleeding the coolant system on a ZX if you loose the bleed cap from the hose on the pipe at the righthand side of the engine, then the dust cap from a car tyre valve (or bike Schrader valve) fits perfectly. BUT check it regularly and do not overtighten otherwise it can split and you end up losing...
