Now that is a GOOD idea.
I'd not thought of it, but as the nitrogen slowly diffuses away, the oil volume should increase as you say. For each sphere size, there should be a relationship between gas pressure and weight.
We need curves on a graph sheet or some clever polynomial.

Hi Baldrick - Although the volumes of the two spheres are the same, the pressures are different. Obviously, with the wrong spheres fitted, the ride isn't going to be as intended. If the pump is clicking frequently, change the accumulator. Usually they're at their limit at three years old.

Does it whine with the engine running and the car stationary.
Does it stop when you put pressure on the pedal, i.e before drive is disconnected.
If the above applies then it's only the release bearing.
Does it whine while the car is moving and with the pedal fully depressed, if so could be gearbox fault or lack of oil.

My xantia 1.9TD (1995) has started whinning. The sound is coming from the front left. I assume it is the gearbox because when I put the clutch down it stops! This has only started since I have had a new clutch. Is it likely to be the gearbox? Is there anything I can do apart from getting a new gearbox?

If you are still feeding the fuel through the filter it could be that which is letting air in - via the primer pump bit. The best plan would be to pressure wash the engine to remove all the oil that has already leaked everywhere.
Then run the clean engine and check for leaks.

More that likely worn out especially if it goes back on easey, new ones are a bugger to press on, there is a spring clip available which goes over the link at the roll bar end, but nothing for the link at the height corrector end which is a bit odd, or should that read, which is a bit Citroen

Are you sure its seized, I was under mine yesterday and it didn't move much, but its all working ok.
Have read elsewhere that they can be stripped down, I wouldn't want to attempt in situ though, don't forget to depressurize it before going in.
If there is a kit its going to ba a Cit dealer job me thinks.

The groaning is I think the height corrector mechanism which is in need of lubrication, don't know why it has started now except that maybe with softer spheres it is sinking a lot more than it did.
WD40 then oil the height corrector mechanism pivots, while you're at it do the back as well. Make sure it is securely jacked before venturing...

Can anyone please help? I changed the front spheres on my Xantia a couple of weeks ago ( by using 36 stilsons and after breaking both a chain wrench and a strap wrench ). How long has this been happening ?
It's possibly ( but unlikely ), that the fluid pipes have been swapped over on the pump. I don't know how it knows between the front and back ( pump wise ), I can only assume the voltage polarity is reversed ( since there are only two electrical connections, and the pump assembly is plastic ).

My hydractive Xantia has a similar sound, though more of a buzzing. It stops after about 30 seconds after you shut and lock the doors. I think it is the valve that switches the suspension from hard to soft. As soon as you open a door it starts again. Does it settle to a good quick even tickover straight after cold starting, or does it run lumpy then also.
Is the starter turning it over fast enough, has there been any work done on the head recently.
How did you test for the glow current, all four plug's will require about 48 amps, had any new glow plug's recently.

If your AX has 3 stud wheels, the GT axle should fit OK, but the suspension height may be incorect.
Why not just replace the stub axle pin? They are no longer available from Citroen but we have plenty here at Andyspares for £39.00.

Don't pull it!! I did and broke it. Haynes leave a bit to be desired sometimes.
The bottom cover slides sudeways to come off. I can't remember which way, but it slides then pulls down.
On the subject of Exclusives. The arm rest on the driver's seat - mine just sort of flops down and points towards the handbrake. Is yours the same?

If the light is coming on, then the ABS computer has shut off - you will have normal brakes, but the ABS won't activate. Most likely cause is a failed wheel sensor - see other recent threads about solving this. Possible I suppose that the wire to the lamp has chafed through and is causing a short making the light come on.

Probably an oil temperature sender. May well have been fitted to all cars, even if the gauge was not put on the dash.

Start with the electrical part of the ignition switch, a known fault.
It has been known (on this site) for the ignition key to get hot due to arcing contact's in the switch.

rusting sump

I don't have any personal experience of it, but if the sump rusts through, Halfords sell a magic sealant which I am assured really does work. If all else fails. . . .

hi all, i have a 1996 Xantia td which has has a lot of rust on the sump at one end (timing belt end)has any one had this problem and had to change the sump and if so any one know the price of a sump,i had a similar problem on a mk1 astra which rusted all the way through so i am a little paraniod that the same thing will happen cheers dave

Xantia engine niggles (2.0 16V)

Hi all,
I have an intermittent problem with my Xantia (SX 2.0 16V). The problem only occurs for a couple of days every 3 or 4 weeks.
During the two or so days when the problem occurs the idle speed seems to set itself too high.
This might only be to about 1000rpm or it can go up to about 1500 instead of the usual 800 ish.

Pleased to hear that the BX is causing no problems (funny how thats happened since you put it in the garage!) :-)
Anyway, in answer to your questions, yes, you need a Volcane rear silencer if the one on your Furio has an Oval tailpipe.
As for the bumper we do keep that as GSF under our ref N81338, its like a Volcane one but with no trim.If...

We've talked at length about ZX rear subframe mounts, but I've found a new fault in this area which we have not mentioned before.
If your ZX has been used for towing, has done a high mileage, or feels a bit unstable at motorway speeds; and your subframe mounts are OK, have a look at the rear damper bottom mountings.

Take a 12 volt supply direct to the motor to make sure its not kaput, if it runs ok, the switch that controlls it or the speed resistor may be likely culprit's.
Check the ignition switch out, Heater and ignition switch are a known problem on Xantias, not sure if the ZX suffers the same here.

My Heater has packed up. The Fan has stopped running on all 4 speeds, I have checked fuses in the fuse board but all are OK. Is there an in-line fuse? Any hints would be appreciated.

I know the 1.9D is only 70 hp against the 60 hp of the original 1.8, but I'd be a little worried about the brakes on the C15 van, before considering this conversion. The front disks are quite puny and are non-ventilated.

just to let you all know, checked bearings today, by jacking rear of car up, looks like bearings are worn as suspected, moved up with some effort, but very little movement up-down, checked sideways movement that looked ok, but will still replace them just to put my mine at rest and to stop this damn squeak
will keep you all informed as work moves...

If you haven't got the original axle to compare with, I think you will need to find out the diameter of the volcane torsion bars, they should be bigger than standard.
The anti roll bars may also be thicker.
If you have got bar's of the correct diameter its a start, though still may not be from a ZX, I would expect sporty 306's to have the same...

Paul,
There are 3 reasons why a diesel won't start:
1. No heat from glowplugs
2. No diesel
3. Poor compression
To aid diagnosis of your problem, some more info is required:
When you could start it, was it also difficult to start when hot, and prone to erratic idle, sometimes leading to it stalling? This would point to an air leak in the diesel...

My 1993 ZX Volcane TD 95,000 miles has gradually got more dificult to start over the last few weeks.
I fitted a new battery less than two years ago and new glow-plugs 12 months ago.
It turns over fine (slightly faster after a battery charge overnight!) but will not catch.
It has now got to the point that it won't start at all.
I have checked that...

You can certainly lower the rear height by adjusting the rear torsion bars, but this is a very complex job. If you do want to do it, here is a helpful link that describes the whole process.

I have a much loved 94 volcane td which has had a replacement rear axle fitted. The axle came from a 97 306 and was fitted by local mechanic. Car was returned looking like an allegro if anyone can remember! The ride height is far too high. Should i look for a complete replacement volcane axle? are the torsion bars on the fitted 306 axle as stiff...

YES YOU CAN GET SPARE PLIP WITH THE ONE BUTTON TYPE YOU HAVE TO TAKE THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE CHIP INSIDE TO A CITROEN AGENT AND THEY WILL ORDER YOU ONE. IF IT DOES WORK WITH BATTERIES YOU CAN GET A NEW CASE.

Sinking door feeling :( on a BX

Vanny,
There are two possibles here:
1. One of the hinge pins has broken off.
2. One of the hinges has rotted away where it is welded to the car.
Open the door wide and move it up and down at the end whilst looking at the hinge area - you should soon be able to see whether it is just a broken hinge pin, or if one of the hinges has rotted out....

I've got the age old sinking feeling with the driver side door on an F-reg 1.9RD BX. The door has dropped an easy 1cm in the last year, to a total of an inch and a half. The door also seems to be buckling at the top.
What is the correct way to fix this? I assume welding is the cure (which is fine because i know a man who can weld snot to silk...

Hi Stephen - Sounds as though there's something amiss with the link rod. You'll have to remove the inside trim, cut away the sealing sheet then look at the link rod going from the inside handle to the lock. I don't have a ZX, but door locks are generally very similar.

That is common problem with Citroen or Peugeot. Best is you measure the length at the spare part shop. Your model might use the flat straight type. Other model like my ZX 1.8 use long spiral type.

Having read that, it makes me glad I didn't get that head after all!! . The only differences with the 405 head were; The intercooler support brackets, one of them was in the center it had to be moved out to the vaccum pump end of the head. And behind the intercooler bracket at the other end there was a blanking plate on the coolant gallery, but on...

The xantia head it uses a set screw (allen head) to block of the oil gallery at either end ( front and back ). The pug 306 td uses steel balls...
