Given the number of 'After-sales campaign' notices concerning Takarta Airbags I have been made aware of when looking up parts from PSA for members, I thought I would post a link to the following documentary that may be informative concerning the issue with these igniters.

According to Takata, the chemicals in the airbags’ explosive charge can...

This has caused some problems for organisations like ours and the Team are currently looking at the best way forward. This...

Rear suspension wow's!

by alan s » 17 Oct 2002, 18:20

First post

Check out rear H/C linkages. Broken, seized or ball popped out.
Shouldn't be too hard to sort but be sure you use a pit, a hoist, axle stands or ramps. Remember; what goes up, must come down - preferrably whilst you're not under it as can happen when fiddling with height correctors.

Jon's Zx develops problems?

by Dave Burns » 17 Oct 2002, 04:47

A pressure test done with no water in the system would be more conclusive, a tiny hole in the matrix wont let water out very fast so the pressure wont drop much and may not even be noticable, but it will let air out at a much higher rate.
Where else would the smell of coolant come from, a leak in the matrix isn't going to start as a raging...

Wet Water in Wet Seat Wells

It rings a bell. There was a discussion about leaky Xantia sunroofs here about a month ago. Haven't got time to find it right now, but have a look for it. Xantia valve noises and oil consumption

I think a Citroën garage would say that was an exceptable oil consumption. The question is, where is it going? Are you leaving drops of oil after you where you park, or is it all going out of the exhaust? The most common cause of high oil consuption (apart from leaks) is worn valve seals (especially with PSA cars) but worn piston rings would have...

My Xantia 2.01 - 16v consumes oil around 0.5 - 0.7 litre (half stick) per 4000 km. Is it normal? There was also some noise from valves before I changed the oil. by B_Draper » 12 Oct 2002, 04:26

First post

Carefully inspect the low-pressure circuit feeding excess fuel back into the system from the injectors. The circuit is made up of the plastic tubes, which connect each injector to each other. I had a similar situation where there was a heavy smell of diesel from my TD. Consequently the engine became to very difficult to fire up once it had been...

Last post

Hiya,
Noticed a smell of diesel coming from my 1994 Citroen Xantia TD SX the other day. It's done 147,414 miles. Investigated last night - flipped the bonnet and the smell got a lot worse. I then noticed the engine block was covered in what I can only assume is diesel.

Same story at the other end of the engine - you can actually see the pools of...

Towbar fitting and electrics

Hi Philip,
Not aquaint with the wiring colours of the BX, but these sites might help as regards wiring of the sockets and relays. You need a 'split charge' relay if you require to feed a fridge when you are on the move, and a 'split charge' relay to charge the caravan on board battery, also when you are on the move. The idea of 'split charge'...

Hi, only just bought a 1988 BX14RE. I am about to fit a towbar from a breakers yard donor car. Does anyone know if there are any pitfalls to watch out for? I've heard about a split-charge relay , while I more or less understand it's purpose; where would I be likely to find it on the breakers car? What colour codes are used on the relevant wiring...

Slow to start when warm?

by RichardW » 11 Oct 2002, 13:44

First post

Oil leak on nearside is probably just the intercooler / manifold seal - did it whistle as well?
Poor starting hot and cold is probably air getting in - can be a bugger to find. If it's a dealer car get them to fix it before you buy, if it's private, tell them it's something serious and knock £500 off the asking price....!!

Hi
Had a disaster earlier this week with 93 aura td the end result being the bonnet flying open at 60 mph causing a lot of damage. Cost to fix much more than the value of the car so a replacement was needed quickly.
This brings me to my question.... I looked at an immaculate 306 Xtdt with 76k miles and a full service history. on inspection the car...

Xantia Heater switch????

My heater fan motor works fine but when i use the 4 or is it 3 speed fan switch I get the full speed and the next one down but when I go to single speed or off the heater fan keeps going it will turn off with the ignition switch. I have had to resort to wiring a switch into a blown fuse which I use inplace of the heater fuse in the fuse box but...

CLUNKING NOISE

by Niek » 10 Oct 2002, 21:03

First post

Sounds like the engine/gearbox can move a bit and is hitting something or, more likely, the exhaust is hitting somthing because the engine moves about. I'd bet on the engine/gearbox supports.
Have fun,
Niek.

I have 1995 citroen zx 1.4i with 70000 miles on the clock. Everytime I let the clutch pedal up from a standstill there is a clunking noise. It also does this when changing gear, and when I accelerate it clunks and decelerate it clunks.
Does anyone know what this fault is.

ZX Elation II Cat

by Mullac » 10 Oct 2002, 02:54

I have a 1996 1.4 ZX Elation II. This has as far as I am aware a 1.8 Furio exhaust system on it as standard.(Something to do with the fancy tail piece) I had the cat replaced about 2 years ago and it seems to hang down a lot from the car. It also knocks off the cross member under hard acceleration. I put this down to the cat being a bad fit.. I am...

Coolant, Oil, Optimax and Idling

I once used radweld and it worked a treat to seal up a small radiator leak , interesting side effect, it also sealed up the thermostat causing some interesting expolsive type noises as the water found away around it. took thermostat out and carried on ok, but ensured i did a real repair job sooner than later.

Last post

Another month and another lot of xantia problems (95 2.0i 8v). Noticed the other day a disturbing watery sound when revving the engine - like a bathtub of water being spun up. I remembered this on my old AX - it was a lack of coolant, somehow causing this noise. And again this is the case - the radiator seems to have corroded and developed leaks...

Valve Clearances

by handman » 15 Oct 2002, 04:24

First post

i would try an oil and filter change, use semi synthetic oil 10w/40 of good quality (a flush) cant harm befor you do this, if the noise persists then do the tappets the gap depends on the engine number or if you have the manuel its not a big job

Last post

Has anyone checked and adjusted the valve clearances on a Citroen ZX 1.4i. As mine makes a tapping noise that seems to becoming from the valve gear area when the engine is cold. However it quietens down when the engine warms. IS THIS A DIY JOB OR IS IT BEST LEFT TO THE GARAGE.

spare wheel

by mbunting » 09 Oct 2002, 21:39

First post

Common problem with Pugs and Cits.
There was a fix some time ago involving an optional locking mechanism available from dealers.
If you look in the centre on the back bumper of 306's, you see a little yellow warning sticker - it tells you there is a lock.
But I sympathise with you, it's a c**p situation to be in.
Mat.

Last post

Hi everyone
Not really a technical problem as such but a word of warning, at lunch time today some git pinched my spare wheel from under my Xsara which was only parked for half an hour so I would recomend that you all check that your bolt is done up as tight as ou can get them.
They seem to have let the tyre down thus releiving the tension on the...

Cruise Control

by JohnD » 10 Oct 2002, 00:02

First post

Probably the ZX didn't have a cruise control option. But you could retro fit one. Take a look at www.ultimatedesign.co.uk or www.conrad-anderson.co.uk I fitted one to a BX and I've also had one fitted to my 2.1 Xantia. Wouldn't like to be without it.

Last post

Anyone know if the ZX had a cruise control option? Would it be difficult to fit?

citroen xm - cold starting problems

by Niek » 10 Oct 2002, 14:23

First post

Scrappy??
I take it you have checked the obvious, plugs, leads, dissy, fuel getting there etc etc ..... And then of course all of the electrical connections. It might be a good idea to just open and clean every connector you see under the hood, relays included.
Good luck,
Niek.

Last post

It takes about nine or ten attempts to start my citroen xm when the engine is cold. After that it coughs and splutters until the engine is warm. After that it is fine and runs very smoothly. I recently bought the car at an auction. It is the SEi model and registered on 30th August 1990. The car has obviously been standing quite a lot since the...

Additives in gearbox oil??

by rabenson » 09 Oct 2002, 16:47

First post

Interesting one - my '94 ZX 1.9D suffers from a similar problem, Sometimes first gear can be a bit of a pig to engage when the car is stationary. Would an additive improve matters or is there something more fundamental that needs sorting? I have lubricated the linkages etc.. I'm generally not a fan of additives but if anyone has experience I would...

Last post

Hello,
Sometimes the gearchange on my Xm is extremely smooth, you can hardly feel anything at all, yet at other times it isn't smooth at all, and you can feel it (the gear I guess) going over things. Cold or hot doesn't influence, different gears don't either.
I've been thinking of an additive (some sort of teflon based oil/grease) to add to the...

Electronic speedo

by spanners » 11 Oct 2002, 04:16

just remove multi plug then take out 11mm bolt or 6mm allenkey and ease drive out (no oil will escape) not a lot you can do with unit if you decide to fit new you will probably need to order blank plug as well because some drives are designed for cables.

Sorry to bore anyone with the everlasting speedo problems on Citroens (My 2cv has never had any, maybe I should get rid of everything except her...) Xantia headlights

by JohnCKL » 10 Oct 2002, 00:15

Hi Nisk,
I've read that Philips Vision Plus gives 50% more light and it's not all hype. Read about it here:

It is not high power bulbs, so no worries about melting. That's what I've heard, haven't installed it ....... yet. If you do go ahead, let me know the results.

The question regards a 1998 Xantia 1.8 16v Break.
Does anyone have any experience of fitting high power lamps to main beam headlights? say 100W H1?
Can the light switch manage without melting? (common problem with my old BX). From the circuit diagram I have looked at, there's no relay in the circuit.
Do the reflectors curl up and die?
Does the...

Dom,
I've heard of the outer casing of the bearing actually turning inside the arms if they are worn/pitted and not holding the bearing really secure. My guess would be that the bearings are probabluy OK but the arms are the problem.

Hi alex123,
A few things to check out here. Have you the correct spark plugs installed ? When did you last change your fuel filter ? Is there a hole in the 'cat' or any part of the exhaust ? I still have my old BX 1.7TD in my driveway, hard to part with it even though I have my Xantia now,....
Think it is worth advertising it for spares and repairs as it, in all good consciousness could not be sold as a viable car, to much work to be done on it!!!
