why does my recently purchased 1996 Xantia 1.8 16v require at least half a litre of oil every 1000 miles ? the car has a full dealer history and has done 60k. it does not appear to smoke on start up or hard acceleration and coolant looks o.k.
any ideas? or is this normal !!!

Try a different brand or type of oil, I once tried Magnatec in my first Xantia n/a diesel, that was the only time I've known a diesel to burn oil, and boy did it burn it.
If its burning oil because of worn internals, there should be smoke when accelerating away after decending a long steep hill using engine braking, during this time the manifold vacuum will be at its most intense and cause oil to be sucked past worn components, such as valve stem oil seals.
