Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

As the find activity is US, I am asking for some help to improve the lighting on our 2 Xantias - a MK1, and a MK2.

Apart from the Phillips Vision Plus (and other) bulbs, I have checked the voltage at the bulbs with engine running, and with battery showing 14.2V, I am getting 12.62V at the bulbs... is it worth installing a couple of relays - 1...

Autocar have had a first drive of the new C5 - looks promising. It's described as essentialy a short wheelbase C6, with many components in common with it, the Pug 407 and old C5.

They're expecting 50% to be sold with steel suspension, the rest with Hydractive 3+. i.e. it looks like all the hydropneumatics will have switchable suspension, which...

Many of the underpinnings are also borrowed from the C6 and, to a lesser extent, the Peugeot 407. That means double-wishbone front suspension and a multilink layout at the back

at speed the C5 has that unflustered, floating-on-fluid feel that is unique to Citroen. At low speeds its ride is more supple than the C6’s

The R reg would most probabaly have the standard M12 X 1.25 Thread, with a standard Citroen type pipe and seal set up.

The T reg will definatly be the fine thread type M12 X 1 using the different pipe end without the rubber seal.

Unless it is a very very late R reg.

1998 1.9TD Estate In for MOT today. What I know beforehand...

1. Needs new exhaust, mid & rear.

2. LHM leak at some kind of valve in front of the anti-sink sphere.

3. I'm sure I have warped brake discs somewhere (friends have confirmed by the feel of the braking).

4. 125K miles & still on original clutch.

The testing station said £1000 but they could about do it as a favour for £750. Too much.

Nearly dead already. Home now & a huge pool of LHM under the car. Power steering near packed in too no doubt due to lack of LHM. Didn't get the other Xant. felt a bit nervous after this one.

normally i would just go down my local garage but it closed last year and the nearest one is miles away

Does anybody on the forum know much about the gearbox on these cars, there is one on ebay at the moment that pulls away in 2nd gear all the time and apparently the oil smells burnt the car has had a fluid change and this did not help, it changes into 4th only sometimes and changes with a thump, but apparently doesn't slip, does anybody know how...

On undoing one of the plugs the cylinder head literally broke away around the thread part, leaving nothing to screw a glow plug back into. I think I might know the answer to this but I have to keep topping up my coolant quite often usually every few days. Just this evening i think i also smelt petrol in the header tank. Is this a sign that the head gasket has gone and needs replacing.

I also think I am going to need a new clutch shortly too so i think this might be a good time to...

I bought a genuine citroen clutch off ebay a while ago with the intention of doing it myself however today I happened to be talking to a mechanic who said he would fit if for me for £150 sounded pretty good to me as I didnt really fancy a weekend on my back in the garage. Almost certainly the HG oil feed to the camshaft... My Indy used to lend me a BX diesel with over 450K on it. I took it on a motorway 160 mile round trip at least once and it drove better than most other older cars. It disappeared after a while and I think it was because it sprung a fairly major oil leak and they couldn't justify repairing it.

Hi all,
I have been experimenting with veg oil in my 95 Xantia 1.9 TD for a while now. I did all the research, that appeared to qualify a try at least. Bosch pump etc...
All was going well with 50% then 75% veg no worries. The other week I gave 100% a go and I noticed that the Fuel pump had sprung a leak.
It appears to be coming from a join in...

Just thought I would let you oil burners know that Tesco have their own brand veg oil on special offer @ 37p per liter for 1 litre bottles.

The Mrs spotted it this morning at our local store...apparently it's a discontinued line hence the price.
Iv'e been thinking about starting to run a bit of veg oil so looks like now's the time.

the negitive terminal on my xantia battery has broken off and now wont screw tight, is there anything available which will hold the terminal in place. i cant imagine im the first to do this. the material used is like putty!

I've had my 1.6 xsara at the garage today having my clutch replaced, and get the call at 4 o'clock, we've done your car, but..... The immobiliser has gone screwy and it won't start at all. The chap says they've tried disconnecting the battery again and allsorts. So I took a loan car home.

I've since found out the spare key and security code card...

While preparing to remove the gearbox for a clutch change on my daughters 95 1.9TD I have found the back of the engine covered in oil - it appears to be from the turbo (not the feed and return lines) and there is also oil in the inlet pipework - the oil loss has not been noticable (on the floor or sump level) and the engine has been running...

It is my experience that many (most?) XUDs will eventually leak from the HG oil gallery feed to the camshaft (just behing the inj pump). The 'O' ring in the gasket just rots out, and the leak can become extremely serious. I changed both my XUD head joint oil leaks: one (205D) at only 100k, the other at 250k miles.

In neither case did the valves...

Word of warning. Unless you're sure your cooling system is in top shape i would advise against the strong long lasting coolants from Halfords and the like.

It has caused no ends of leaks in mine, when it was running just fine previously - im guessing its dissolved or moved some gunk stopping the liquids getting out... possibly old radweld!...

but the search option doesn't presently work! :roll:

I have noticed recently that whenever I turn on the air conn there is a strange almost metalic scraping noise it comes and goes every few seconds, I think its comming from the air con pump. also the air con sometimes doesnt work, paticularly when the weather is really cold.

anyone got any ideas, I suspect hat the pump is on its way out, are they...

hi All.. have head these on for 2 weeks now.. grip is way better than the old 185 14's (They are on exclusive alloys but i gather you can fit 205's to normal steel wheels - I have a the previous set of these if anyone wants them)

The body roll now really shows up as a handleing woe.. but I am a bit spoilt buy having a V6 before I got this TD LX...

I replaced the pads on my xantia td yesterday in the hope it would combat my bad braking distances, but found when i took the old ones off they were only half worn.

They were very smooth though and so were the discs. The discs were worn compared to the outer edge showing what they were like new.

Now, should i be looking at hydraulic causes or do...

I heard a 406 drive past today, like you, i heard it coming! I am just concerned the longer i leave it the more likely it is something is going to break. Its quite likely the belt is just a bit too long and it wasnt adjusted correctly, as the guy doing it was short on time. It was unnoticeable before the belt was done....

Since having my cambelt done my aux belt tensioner has been noisy, it rattles and rumbles. It fine at idle when warm, but it still makes a noise when you rev it, then goes quiet. On a cold morning it is sometimes very noisy!

I've just looked on pr.net and there are FOUR different belts quoted depending on whether you have a Sanden or Lucas-Harrisow A/C compressor or have an early or late car :roll:

The belt is also different between early 1.9s and later 1.9s with the 2.1 style tensioner set-up so you have a lottery there.

My baby needs new rear spheres. Kwik-fit just diagnosed my exhaust mid section is sheared from the rear section & want £143.60 to replace both pieces.

The centre sphere is mainly responsible for the soft ride, so just changing that will probably make more difference than the outer ones. You will likely need a proper sphere removal tool although you can loosen it with a large hammer and chisel - if you can get to it.

Hi all,
I was replacing my abs sensor on the front nearside of my xantia.
The bolt came out ok apart from being tight.
Then the ABS Bolt sheared off!!! :shock:
about 2mm showing.
So.... How can I get it out because it was tight going in

Quick question. Is it possible to replace the handbrake cables on a ZX estate with drum brakes without dismantling the shoes etc?

Having spent some time trying to get them back together after cleaning self adjusters and discovering seized cable, I'd rather not have to do it all over again!

Finally got round to replacing both cables today. So I can answer my own question. It is possible to replace the cables without dismantling the shoes etc.
It was one of those nice straightforward jobs where nothing broke, all nuts came undone easily and reassembly really was the reverse of dismantlement!

Definatly not! Insides of the pump will soon break up because of the way it works, Bosch pump is suitable but worth mentioning leaks are also possible!

There's a good Xantia brake problem thread currently going on elsewhere but my anomaly isn't mentioned. So here goes.

THE SYMPTOM

My 2.0i 16v 99T has on four separate occasions during the last fortnight, and each time within a few minutes of starting the car, completely failed to respond to the brake pedal being pressed. It happened...

If it's happening at slow speeds then I'd start by checking a couple of other bits.

First, are the brakes pulsey?
If so do they pulse more as engine revs die?
Also does you're car make a frequent (1second to 10 seconds) ticking noise from under the bonnet right at the front of the car when idling?

I think you're problem may be the accumulator...

I've recently purchased a low mileage Xsara HDI estate. It is in very good condition however, I've noticed that there is a bit of road noise being transfered through the front suspension. The is also a faint knocking when going over uneven surfaces.

I expect the Xsara is similar to the ZX in which case the front suspension rattle is probably a failed drop link. As its on the anti-roll bar its really only under load when one wheel hits a bump - not both like a join in a concrete road or a speed hump. This may help you confirm the problem.

Chaps, i have just got neutral ebay feedback for selling a mark 1 key and it's associated receiver circuit board.. :(

Its definately not Curry smell, does sound more like the oil leak problem, ive got no major leaks (oil on the driveway or such) and it is going... so it may just have been spilt oil or the like!

Hi,
My 1.9 TD has started overheating at high revs, and the heaters for inside the car blow cold even when the engine is very hot. Oil temp also goes a lot higher than normal. The thermostat was replaced over six months ago. Could it be this again?? I thought a new component would last longer, or could something else be causing this??

Thanks for the help, I bleed the cooling system with the bleed valves, got lots of air out, then took the car for a good drive and the temperature's back to normal about 70 degrees and the heaters are warmer than they've ever been.

Please excuse my ignorance but could someone tell me what HID lighting is. I have seen a HID lighting kit advertised on Eurocarpart web site. At the moment the lighting on my 1995 XANTIA is quite poor and i would like to improve it by having a more intense light from my headlights.

Hi, I had the exact same problem with my MkI Xantia,
The problem is that your hydraulic pump is tired. The steering uses low pressure and the pump directs high pressure to the brakes as priority.
You will have to get a new pump, I had to after trying all the other suggestions.
Pleides do a good pump for about £150 with your old one in...

If you buy 10L of vegi oil from tesco or wherever, pour it into your fuel tank and put about 15L of diesel in too. works out a lot cheaper and works ok. if you use oil that you have cooked with, you will have to filter it to remove and bits out of the oil.

Hi everyone,

Had a problem suddenly start with my C3 just a few days ago. It sounds like the exhaust is blowing beneath the bonnet (sounds like a tractor), and it's really hard to start; takes multiple attempts and then belches lots of grey smoke into the air.

Lifted the bonnet tonight but too dark to see much, other than that the engine is...

While the CX is off the road getting work done by me I couldn't resist swapping the Xantia's front spheres for the Cx's. I was concerned that the higher pressure and larger volume of the CX pair would not go down well with the Xantia's weight and axle set up but the result was quite pleasing.

With 500cc spheres at 80bar and the CX's lower damping...

I have 2 xantia estates, 1 for spares. The good car needs new spheres for the front, main accumulator, and anti-sink. The only decent spheres on the spare car are the front and rear ones. I will change the front ones over, but was wondering if i could use the rear ones on the spare to replace the main accumulator and anti-sink on the good car.......
