Citroen C5 satellite navigation map nightmare!

Post by R9UKE »

Hi,

I bought a 2001 C5 while in England and it's got the great built in sat nav system.

It worked a treat, getting me from Birmingham to Stranraer without a hitch. But now I'm back home in Northern Ireland... which doesn't seem to be covered my the map!!!!!??

It says my current destination in the last street i was on in Stranraer, before taking the ferry, but on the full map, it just shows the car in the middle of nowhere. This is absolutely ridiculous... the map disc covers SCANDINAVIA but not Ireland!!!??? Typical Citroen quirkiness I suppose :(

Anyway, I'm having a real tough time finding another map disc. There is a disc on ebay at the mo for the Citroen C8/Peugeot 807.. any ideas if this is the same system? Will it work in the C5?

Other than that... I love this car, the Hydractive suspension is very cool.

Luke,

Firstly, welcome to the forum.

I would think that it is more than likely NOT to work, there are 2 types of SatNav discs, and I think that this could be the wrong one. Have you tried to reset your system? I'm guessing that you have the RT3 with the NavTeq disc.

Give these guys a try, I've found them very useful

Not on a 2001-2005 C5!
It will be the Philips-Carin box. However it is still a Navteq database. Now by coincidence given that I regard my system as absolute c**p largely because the maps are so out of date I was researching this myself last night. The Navteq map discs are broken up into areas UK and Ireland being one area so basically if you have the UK you should have Ireland UNLESS Citroen in their wisdom broke it down into even smaller areas on original fit. Navteq list two UK CD's for the U.K one with ITIS and one without ITIS i guess equates to Traffic Master.

Have just taken my disk out to have a look the disk clearly states U.K and Ireland + principal European routes.

It also has files that have Carin in the title.
This is still on ongoing investigation as far as I am concerned largely because I don't like the approx £100.00 asked by Navteq.
I am not convinced that any of the discs currently on E-Bay will work simply because they appear to be for VDO boxes rather than Phillip-Carin. Although they may basically be the same box the underlying operating system will different.

Trainman - Thanks for the link, I'm going to check that out. You say reset the system? How is that done?

I've just taken the disc out - It is a "Navtech on board" and says:
GREAT BRITAIN cartographic CD including the major roads of Europe.
Version 2000-1.

Is this likely to work?

Other than that I'm in a dead end situation. I went through an equally hideous time trying to get a disc for the Vel Satis - I don't think I can handle anymore "Incorrect Navigation Disc Inserted" messages!

Thanks for your help so far, I've asked in the right place :)

Your sat nav will be exactly the same as the one in my C5.

You will have the RD2 radio which is nothing to do with the sat nav.

The Sat Nav CDrom is in a compartment by your right knee and you have a 7" colour screen.

The disk you need is the same as the one in this photo.

This is one I got off ebay in 2006. It cost £30. I've seen them recently with 2008 mapping for £50.

This one should work. It's for C5 up to June 2004 and Peugeot 607 to Sept 2004. In fact I think I'll get one for myself.

Kev that's a massive help, at that price it's bound to be worth a go. Thanks for that.

Yes our sat nav systems sound exactly the same, however, my disc is this one:

That's exactly the same as my original disk which has been in a box in the spare bedroom for a couple of years or more.

The disc in my photo is the one that's currently in my sat nav and works perfectly.

You can use either tele atlas or navteq maps. Both these companies produce the map discs for the vdo dayton system that we have in our C5s.

It's Renault branded... but everything else is right. What do you think?

I've just been to look at my original disc.

It's slightly newer than yours and is for UK/Ireland instead of Great Britain.

But is for the same system.

Here it is in full colour:-

That link to the Renault branded disc doesn't show enough detail, so, don't go for it.

You need either Navteq or Tele Atlas for vdo dayton and in the listing you need to see a reference to early C5 with big colour screen. You should also see listed the Peugeot 607 which uses the same sat nav system.

That link I showed you would be spot on. Wait till it's nearly ended then skim it... that's what I do.....

Wow...perfect. I'm not fussed about how up to date the maps are as I'm not planning to keep the car too long.

How much do you want for it?

You can have it but, it'll be way out of date. That's why I don't use it anymore.

Just cover the cost of postage and I'll send it if you're really interested, but, to be honest, for the cost of an up to date disc off ebay you'd be better paying £30 or so for a good one.
