Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I can't speak for Xsara in particular but the ease or difficulty of getting exhausts apart is determined by the type of joint between the pipes. There is no need to bleed the high pressure side of the fuel system, just prime the circuit using the rubber bulb when you are finshed.

ZX Volcane TD Clutch life

My '95 Xantia with the same engine did 149k on the original clutch. The pressure plate broke and its springs escaped so a new clutch was needed, but the friction plate and release bearing were both OK and its those that usually cause people trouble.

My Volcane is nearing 140,000 miles and is still on the original clutch !!!
Have I been lucky or is it usual for a low reving diesel ?
Admitedly the 80,000 I have done in it is mostly motorway.

Doesn't the Volcane have an air horn, and is the canister the compressor for the horn? I think the 2-wire connector is for the conventional horn fitted to 'lesser' cars.

Whilst replacing the horn on my ZX today I noticed in the wiring near the horn (front of nearside wheelarch) a canister shaped item 3 inch by 1/2 inch approx with a 3 wire connector to it.It looks like it has rubbed against the loom (or got very hot and melted it) and caused a short on a feed to a spare 2 wire connector.

I've just had my xantia MOT'd (passed) but have been told that the steering rack is on its way out and that the brake pipe hoses are splitting (not gone through yet). Any ideas as to what I would be looking at cost wise. Vehicle is a 94 1.9TD with 147K on it. I'm not mechanically minded so would need to put it into a garage.

Changed the clutch at 69,000 miles, not an original part.
Done 19,000 miles on the new clutch and problems are already coming to the surface.
On setting off in first the car shakes/shudders and the clutch pedal has started to stick a bit half way down. The pedal sticks especially very badly when the engine is turned off....

Syphon out all the contents of the tank - everything you can.
Then brim it with diesel (prime your pump too).
You may get away with it and it will run through. Otherwise the other option is to have a garage suck out the fuel system with a vacum pump then re fill and re prime. - Expensive.
Personally I would try a bucket and hose myself first. Then...

What's the point of the numbers anyway? I mean, how accurate is it going to be? There was nothing wrong with the old red=too hot, blue=too cold and roughly halfway=normal. I think Citroën were just trying to be sophisticated. It would have looked better if the needle sat horizontally at normal too, in my opinion.

Once again, does pumping up the fuel with the hand pump before starting make any difference?
If so, you've probably got a fuel filter that's leaking in air. If not, start looking at the cold start mechanism.

You could try.
The near future will force you to do something, as the cable clip at he pedal dead sure will snap.
It is very rare these days to find the clutch itself at fault. The common first symptom is exactly as you have it now.
The cause is either a dry cable or the release bearing has grooved into the release plate - which means clutch...

Donno on these separate PAS pumps.
But I think it's more or less a question of using your fantasy.
You must find a way bleeding the system from a low point. Then top up with clean (correct !) fluid. I'm unsure if you can use any common automobile cleaner, like petrol, thinner or white spirit. My concern is the seals.

I have changed a subframe before on a BX, its not nearly as bad as it first looks, given the importance of steering geometry and overall symmetry of the front end I would not hesitate to replace it, read carefully through the job in the book of fiction and find one would be my recommendation, AFAIK there are only two types 1.4s and the others....

mine is doing this, it sounds worse than a slipping belt, but when you look at it the belt moves in time with all the other pulleys just not the idler. Of the psa ones it has to be old 1.9 ally lump 16v, not that im biased :) 160bhp as standard. The 2 litre as in the zx would have more if you removed the cat but its iron so heavier. Problem is people have cottoned onto bx 16v's being the same as 405 mi16's now and the engines are going for quite a lot on ebay. The only other issue with the 1.9 is...

The ones you describe sound the same as the ones we used on a BX16V when we redid it.
I think you'll find the upper section of the thread is almost like a wood screw and I imagine it's there as part of the stretching procedure.

Guys, can you help my Xantia 1.9TD(r) has got the judders at mid revs.
When i excelerate at low ish revs the gear stick & brake peddle judder. this goes away as i reach about 3k rpm.
Thought it was the clutch but it doesnt do it when i 1st start off and lift the clutch, only when you reach about 2k -3k rpm.

The cover sounds most likely. I would remove it again even with the hassle involved and try running the engine without it. The process of elimination is a wonderful thing!

Hi Neil,
On most of the hatchbacks the alarm unit which makes that lovely sound, is positioned under the n/s front wing right where the wing indicator lens is. Basically you can get to it from under the wheel arch by removing the plastic guards. To remove it though you may have to remove the scuttle if the nut is seized, like my one was! Oh such...

It's only one more action to take the shaft out and do the job on the bench. That makes it easier to remove the CV and less chance of causing any damage.

To remove scratches from an alloy surface, you have to do a filling and then polishing.
Donno if such a repair is possible to do lasting as DIY. I doubt as the wheel is opposed to large forces and harsh environment.

The pollen filter filters both fresh and recycled air, so I'ts being used all the time. A Citroen guy once told me it's important to change them as recommended (anually) as blocked filters will put a strain on the blower.
Can't help with the keys, I'd be interested to know too.

sort the air intake! Standard air filters are pretty much useless. Either a straight swap for a K&N panel would be good, or an induction kit.
If you start getting decent power out of the lump you'll find you kill engine mount rubbers pretty quick so well worth going for a polly bush (£40 ish but then your not having to change every 10,000 miles!...

I had a similar sensation in my BX when rear arm bearings were worn - effectively giving me a little 'feature' called rear wheel steering (which the BX was not supposed to have). Its worth checking the alignment of the rear wheels - look from the rear of car and if wheels are leaning towards each other e.g /---\ then your rear arms probably need...

I hate doing this job. I've done it a few times before on previous AXs but I must do it for my latest. I wish I wasn't so tight sometimes so I could take it the garage!!
Anyway the trouble I always have is deciding what the tension should be. Does anybody have any tips?
