Ok you can all laugh, i put petrol (40litres) into my Xantia 1.9L i am pretty new to this car. I stopped the car when i noticed it acting strange, about a mile after making the mistake.
So where do i begin?

Syphon out all the contents of the tank - everything you can.
Then brim it with diesel (prime your pump too).
You may get away with it and it will run through. Otherwise the other option is to have a garage suck out the fuel system with a vacum pump then re fill and re prime. - Expensive.
Personally I would try a bucket and hose myself first. Then get yourself down the Petrol station witha couple of cans of diesel and re fill your tank.
Bet you wont do that twice!
