I doubt the piece of plastic holding the cable to the floor will cause an issue with the air bag light, but an intermittent loose connection in the plug and socket almost certainly will. Check for a good electrical connection within. Look...

Why are DI units more prone to damage when having a small drink of petrol ?

Is it just the HP pump internals really cannot stand the lack of lubrication compared to a IDI unit or is it the injectors that are going to have problems.

Having said that the thought of petrol being pressurised to that degree in a DI unit is a scary thought. :-k

Yes I know :oops: , but no one locally had any decent Bosch / Beru in and these were next day delivery. I really should of asked the factor to order them in. I've used Bosch in the 205, they were still working six years later.

There are squillions of various clutch kit numbers from PSA, then you go to an aftermarket supplier like Valeo and they name their kit as an interchange for maybe a dozen of these part numbers.

Breaking it down further, how abusible are the kits? I mean (example plucked from thin air) will a 1.9D cover and disc...

I find that I don't feel in as much control in heavy snow in an automatic. I'm not really sure why though.

I suspect its simply the lack of (as effective) engine braking or the ability to control that more accurately with a clutch maybe ? :-k

I think 'disconnected' is the correct word. When I had the auto Astra (yes I know) it was the only vehicle I drove so I do not think it was any more than a 'feeling' of disconnection. Although the brakes were a bit too powerful for a small car (they were controllable) and no ABS although I'm not a great ABS fan to be honest.

minor mishap today after a journey that should have taken 1.5 hrs took 3.5 hrs, M1 nightmare around MK , got asked to move my car from under a canopy where working

My Xantia Hdi has covered 190,000 ,but i think it is now time for a change of car.It will be sadly missed , but i feel it is now time to move on as the car is no longer economically viable to repair. The later or current S40 is nothing but a dressed up Fraud Focus!! You can even see the Focus rear suspension hidden under the body.. .

Hi Malcolm, I have the oil leaks outside, mainly from the top cover gasket resembling petrified wood, also there is copious oil in the water, suggesting the gasket has seen better days. 385K (kilometres) and original, so replacement is a given. As there are no other failure issues (like, overheating) I don't want to skim the head.

Insurance claim advice

After my little run in with a tree on Thursday I called the insurance company who have arranged for someone to come and take my car away to assess it so that they can make a total loss offer. I am now wondering if that was the right thing to do.

The car was a 406 Estate HDi 90 Rapier, 51 plate with 157000 miles on it. I paid £1500 3 years or so...

Thanks all for the advice. I have now cancelled the claim. In doing so I have kept my no claims bonus at 8 years (will be 9 by the end of this year) instead of it dropping to 4 as it would have if I had pursued the claim, this was confirmed by the insurance company when I spoke to them this morning.

The insurance co took the same view as Handyman...

What do you prefer, if any

I dont know what i prefer.....i've got an 01 2 ltr hdi 306 est and an 03 C5 2 ltr est.......i prefer the C5 inside for driver ergonomics and comfort, but the outside (especially front) is horrible.....

Whereas withe Pug, i prefer outside, as the inside's ergonomically not a good place for me

A search for something unlrelated the other day revealed this fact to me, the 93 to 02 'bubble' shape Micra was available with a diesel engine.

To be fair I'm happy(ish) with the TUD5b unit, it does seem a bit more lively than the earlier ones. The 1.4 was something else and I'm not surprised PSA were quick to replace it.

Reminds me I must insert a resistor into the coolant temp feed to stop it advancing so far when stone cold. More research needed for that first.

Anyone else upgraded to Precise Pangolin (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS) yet?

I did my laptop and desktop PC today and both upgrades (from Ocelot) went very smoothly indeed..

It may be my imagination but Pangolin seems smoother and faster. So far so very good...

Rather than continue a Thread Jack on another thread I taught I'd ask the question.

I have never heard of using the hand brake at lights as best practice. Taking out of gear in a manual but not an auto. But we do learn to drive differently here and have different road rules that take some time for Pomgolians to get used to when moving over here....

Just been in the Shell garage by Tongwell and overheard the Autogas chap saying they can't sell until they have been trained by Autogas. The training given by the retailer of the pumps isn't good enough.
He also said they are going around other garages and mentioned Total/Texaco.

Had this a couple of days ago but I wanted investigate it closely.

Symptoms: No start. Fuel being supplied. A closer examination revealed no supply to the glowplugs even though the warning light operated.

Powering it up I could feel the contact move, confirmed there was power present in the heavy input feed (I think its partly wired to the...

I love driving my V6 as a daily driver but I notice there's a few problems

as it gets into x3 figures in places where it's just not feasible to actually do

Yet another indeed - I think those who think it will somehow cause damage are of the same mindset who think anything beyond what most people do is obviously not right.

Using a fuel which is edible has to be safe! Not that I would want to pour my fuel on salad, even if it is polished to half a micron, although I know in many countries 'new'...

One for the all-rounders (Malc, Homme-de-main etc):

We need a timing tool set for a Corsa Z14XEP motor (I think the last letter just means petrol, right?). It's unlikely the tool will be used much at all. Local dealer sold us the wrong one (non-returnable special order; they advised which one to order) at $190 - ouch!

So I have checked Fleabay....

I think this is the same basic unit as the smaller Ecotec ones, the cam angle plate is a piece of metal (BOL suggests a cardboard template I think) so you can be sure where it is, and a pin to go into the crankcase that contacts a crank web possibly.

Timing chain unit I presume.

I think the cheaper ones will be OK, given that its more likely...

A cursory image search via Google did not reveal anything.

I do not recall ever taking one of these off, so I wanted to see any baffling if fitted to determine a couple of things. Suction drain mainly.

I do know a modification was done to the DW8 to permit...

They are nice. If I remember correctly some had the 'denim' style interior.

I can only recall seeing the CJ with the TU3 (the 1.4 unit) with a carb fitted although that's fine as the single carb TU when properly setup is quite lively, certainly more so than the same unit in say a newer car with monopoint injection. I also seem to think they did...

It's something I can't yet master. Especially here, where the fasteners never corrode into a flaky fusion of bolt and bodyshell. So easy to unbolt one bit, unscrew another, release some clips, etc etc. Had to stop before I was at the firewall with this one; it is such a basic car.

I noticed that a C6 is being broken for parts on ebay, looking at one of the items listed as in the N/S/F window I see the laminations have started to separate/mist which is exactly what I found on the one I looked at in this thread and the subject of a lengthy discussion looks like that car is starting its transformation into becoming a baked...
