Next Car ?

Post by xantiasmiff »

My Xantia Hdi has covered 190,000 ,but i think it is now time for a change of car.It will be sadly missed , but i feel it is now time to move on as the car is no longer economically viable to repair. Anyway, i was wondering about purchasing a Volvo S40 diesel. Any one on here got/had one. Any comments would be appreciated. Cheers.

My personal feeling is it'll be very hard to replace the Xantia...

I've often wondered what I'd replace one with and apart from a luke-warm feeling for a C4 I draw a complete blank...

An XM might fit the bill...

Which model year of Volvo S40 are you considering?

If its the later model with the 'floating' dashboard then they use Peugeot/Citroen/Ford diesel engines. The 2.0HDi 138HDi 16v is available in that and its a cracking engine, very economical, bags of torque and its reliable too.

If its the earlier S40 which has been around since 1996 or so, there really are better cars. Ive only driven the 1.8 V50 which was a 2002 car, it worked and had massive miles but it was a dull thing.

I dont think an XM is a good Xantia replacement Jim, not if its to be something which is more economically viable to repair

I would suggest a C5 but you have probably already thought about those ...

Peugeot 407? Again the 2.0 138 HDi is the one to have.

The later or current S40 is nothing but a dressed up Fraud Focus!! You can even see the Focus rear suspension hidden under the body.. However the 1.6 and 2.0 HDis are used, but any mag review always say "... they use Fords diesel engines..."

However, I bet you didn't know that PSA/Ford have gone BACK to 8v engines!

The reasons for this: Multi valve engine, though let better and more air flow are inheritly higher revving engines.. No good for DERV's.. However 8v engines are inheritly more torquey and lower revving.. Perfect for Diesel.

Im led to beleve they have gone back to 8v designs bu use bigger valves for the air flow...

That doesn't sound quite right to me. :?
The 16v HDi in my C5 is much more torquey and lower reving than the earlier 8v HDi engine. My 2.0HDi 16v does 100mph effortlessly .. at 3,000rpm! The 2.0HDi 8v is a little more stressed! However, no doubt the more modern engines are more powerful and have more torque anyway.

Ford did help develop the 1.6 & 2.0 16V engines, along with Peugeot Citroen.

The Volvo S40 is very similar to a Ford Focus, however thats not actually a bad thing, as the Focus might be dull but its not a bad car. Though I would say for the price of a S40 diesel you could find something better and more interesting.

It is a little odd that they have gone back to 8vs, I always thought 16v engines to be more fuel efficient, among other things. Certainy appears to be the case.

A 2.0HDi 138 407 would make a superb car, they look great in my opinion and the engines are really very good. Just make sure it has been serviced every year or 12K MAX!

I get 50MPG from my C5 with the same engine and the performance aint bad either.

I've just posted an ad for my beloved Xantia Estate. I finally decided to buy a new shape C5 Tourer and have gone for the Exclusive with all bells and whistles. I am sad to have to sell the Xantia which I've owned from new - hope to find a new owner on the forum as she only needs a new clutch.
As for Volvos - lady I work with loves them......I like the new Hyundia Tourer but coudn't afford one - same goes for Audi A6. But when you are a Citroen man.........

Thanks Citromad -I'm looking forward to picking the new car up. I didn't like the first C5 Estate even though the space was just a good as the Xantia and despite some comments about the new shape I think it is a step up for Citroen.

I now need to find a new owner - don't think you get much from scrapping and the car is too good for that surely! If I can find a home then I'll be delighted.
