Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

I'm wondering why the 405 has massively heavier steering than my Xantia, when both have near-identical racks/rams (and the Citroën has wider tyres).

Do the rams ever leak internally, causing heavy steering, or is it more likely to be the usual breakdown inside the pinion valve?

Does anyone have leakage rates to share?

That leak, Jim, must have been past the pushrod end seal. Could have been ugly if fingers had been in the way, given the pressure applied! Mate has a Ford ute that loses steering fluid pretty much that fast.

I'm more looking at the leak type you can't see; Malcolm's comments make sense, but I would be interested to know if there's supposed to be...

Is it possible to disable the automatic lights and wiper mode on my 2005 Balingo

I had them on the Xantia and they were superb, very rarely wiping when they shouldn't or not wiping when the were needed.

The ones on the 807 are not quite as good, sometimes give a wipe when there's nothing there, I put this down to the sensor being at the bottom of the screen and getting drips flying up off the wiper arms/bonnet.

Wrestling with the Xantia's towbar yesterday, I managed to suddenly release grip with my left hand whilst pulling part of the assembly strongly towards me. Bear in mind I'm a tradesman, not an office bod, so brute strength is pretty well up there.

Result? I punched myself fairly in the nose/mouth. It's rather sore and swollen today. :roll:

The other day, I replaced my X2's dipped beam bulbs (original Philips from January '99) with new Osram overspec ones. Was just getting that feeling it was nearly time .

The old filaments looked grey and oxidised; a very gentle shake of each and they crumbled - in real life this might have been a few more bumps or corrugations on a dark road......

The fog light fcukwits are out !!! We have a bit of mist with no real reduction in visibility and they have front and rear fogs on like visibility was down to 3 car lengths or sumat !! Hello All,

Just wondering if anyone knows if Renault 16's are sought after?
The reason I ask is that my dad has one parked under a sheet (it is I think an old L reg, about 1972? Would need to check. it has been there many years) and a few spares (wings, bonnet, boot lid etc).

Furthermore, it seems advocated that replacement with OEM parts is imperative. Nobody talks of cleaning them.

The bit which does the triggering, looks to be wholly re-usable. I haven't dissected this, but it doesn't give any hint of frangibility.

I've finally secured a spare IP to practice on so I'm now looking for info on the rebuild kits. From what I can tell, they have to be matched to the IP part number and even then may not contain ALL replaceable seals, bearings, bushes and O-rings etc.

Recommendations on suppliers, prices and technical info welcome.

Heads up , there is a good little battery charger at Aldi at the moment.
6 & 12 volt , microprocessor controlled , maintenance charge , recovery charge , will charge 14 - 120 AH batteries. All for £12 odd !!

sorry all, a bit off topic !

I had what I thought to be a corrupted USER profile on Win2K..

I made a copy of the directories under it, and then somehow deleted the user whilst logged in as it !

now I cant log back on as that user, and I cant log on as an administrator :( so i am locked out completely (on old laptop at mo)

What I'm referring to here, are the generic data books panel shops used to have with measurements for assorted cars - diagonals, overall lengths, wheelbases, panel joins and the like.

They were used before comprehensive factory data became common, in repairing damaged cars.

Would anyone have one of these, covering French cars from the later...

i know its not car related but we dont have a section for general chat,

we currently use Virginmedia, 19. odd quid a month, and for that we get suposedly unlimited internet and any time STD land linee calls all in, but they sting you for 0800, 0845, and 087 numbers dialed,

they also seem to keep slowing our service down from 5.5 to 6 meg down to...

Hmmmm, think I might be a bit wrong here.

I've found some information that normal ADSL is a maximum of 8Mbps down and 1 Mbps up. This is from the original ratification in 1998. There are later variations of this which up it to 12/1.3 and even 12/1.8 over ISDN.

ADSL2 is originally 12/1 in 2002 when it was ratified. There are later variants...

Is there a site I can enter the reg and discover which model it is? I have a vague memory of something similar but unsure what details it gave.

On a sidenote, I saw there's a mobile app that takes a reg number and shows the details. Playing with it, one owner tapped in a Range Rover reg and it came back as a BMW convertible :? :lol:

I've read that adapters can be had to convert a petrol timing gun to work on diesels. Has anyone got any more info or ideas on how to achieve the conversion? It's a matter of using a piezo and adapting the gun to accept the signal in place of a lightning bolt.

Before we start i know there is a law about fronting insurance but they class everyone as they are doing this when they are not, For those who have not heard of it, Its basicly just having insurance on a second car and adding a learner driver just to get it cheaper.

The computer box died unexpectedly when its onboard graphics driver decided to cark after six years of service... Work was flat out and I had no free time for fixing a computer until Saturday evening.

Now we're just closing a three day weekend and I managed to rest up slightly (not! :twisted: ) with a mega Sunday drive...

I'm out of my depth here and I pray some aid can come my way.

Dad bought a new Nissan Pixo a few months ago and now, due to deteriorating leg and foot issues, he's having great difficulty driving it as it's manual. A shame as the Pixo is a smashing little car.

He has asked me to find him a small automatic to replace the Pixo and costing around...

we got there about 6.30ish, them went off on to go to Brentford following Chris Salter, got stuck at some traffic lights Chris disapeard into the distance, and we spent the rest of the evenning trying to find our way out of the centre of London,

My current insurers won't quote my Xantia and not informing them of what modifications I've done so far and hope to do before the policy expires is not a clever idea IMO. I've had one estimate but it's not a quote and would like a few to use as bargaining tools... so all recommendations welcome!

I've just had my renewal notice from the AA and had a bit of a shock when I saw the price (£153) Just had a quick look around online and have found that Green Flag, The RAC, and infact the AA all cost about £115 for equivalent cover levels to what I have if you buy online.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the best of the bunch?

So I phoned and said the same cover was being advertised on their Web Site for £145.0 they said that price was for 'new customers only' so guess what! I'm now a 'new customer' WITH THE AA

Trying to renew front pads I noticed a rubber ? pipe that appeared to be broken - brakes / suspension are working properly with no sign of any LHM leakage - I have emailable photos - also front brake calipers are meant to swing up to remove pads - I could only get them halfway - with handbrake cable disconnected - can't figure out what's stopping...
