Shouted myself one of the fancy billet trolley jacks for home use - four wheeled variety, not the three-legged type. So far, quite impressed (1500kg rating). Local price was $220, or about £145.

Definitely not up to fulltime workshop use, but for a hobbyist it seems a viable alternative to a proper workshop jack - without the killer weight.

has there ever been a study/survay into what make/modle ( if any more than others ) of car is involved in the most accidents,

Well.. as some of you know, I have been lucky to have run 100% WVO for a few years, supplied by a reliable chap on the South Coast..

The use of oil has dictated my staying with (and improving) the great xantia, and even some of the journeys and holidays I have made..

Booked the Alfa in for belts etc, cam variator, sundry lookover. Final bill came in at 75% over verbal quote, mainly due to local prices on plugs (eight at almost $30 EACH), a new cam cover gasket ($110) and some oil. Ouch! I had to put £15 worth of derv in the Xantia at my local Tesco store last week.
I expected to get approx 150 miles from this amount..
What did i get.. 115 miles.

This confirms to me that Tesco fuel is rubbish.
I detest Tesco anyway but thats my own fault for not travelling the extra 5 miles to my usual Total garage where i 99% of the time fill...

At Lidls now, screen wash with antifreeze 5lit for £5.99.
I used this neat last year all through the winter and even at -20C it didn't freeze in the jets!!!
In fact I last filled it neat in March and in summer all I've done is top it up with water and its still soapy!!!

How do they fare?

I'm experimenting with clearing the oily coolant crap from my 605 by stewing a replacement header tank (from another car with the same problem) in strong caustic. The oil has formed like a marine grade grease.

What happens if I put hoses in a caustic bath for a day or two? Some will be very difficult to clean fully by manual...
