Remapping a Berlingo 2.0HDI

Post by Northern_Mike »

Hi All,

I have a Blingo 2.0HDI 90 model. It's a brilliant tool, but it needs more motorway grunt when fully laden. Plenty of info around on remapping the 90HDI engine - I just wondered if anyone here has done this - in a Xant or Berlingo, who they used, and what the results were like. There's plenty of plug'n'pray boxes available on fleabay, or there's "reputable" companies advertising to do it for around £200.

You could tell me to just buy a more powerful people carrier, but I love the Berlingo. It's fine for 90% of the time, but we've got family coming over for a few months in the spring, and it's going to mean a lot of heavily laden, long journeys. It needs more motorway overtaking grunt, especially on the hills..

Anyone help?

cheers

Mike P

Not had it done myself, however i have heard that good results can be achieved possibly up to 110bhp,
also despite the bad image of plug and play box's a member on here, i think it is citroenxm,
although i may be wrong has one and reports very good results so it might be worth looking out for a
good quality plug and play box on ebay. Someone may correct me but i believe that you could use a box from a
wide variety of cit's and pugs that use the 90bhp hdi so you should find something.

i have a tuning box on my Hdi 110 and have had for the last 10k is a nice little mod and smooths the engine out a bit and does appear to give a bit more low down grunt and mid range, nothing at the top, but you don't need it there. mpg wise is pretty stable, the biggest gains i find there are servicing... and getting my right foot lightened.

there is someone with a 306 hdi 90 that added an intercooler up front and had a play with the engine and got it pretty well tuned from what i can recall. a quick google will find you what you need

Hi Mike,

I've had a tuning box on a Xantia HDi 110 that was very disappointing but it is possible that the MAF was faulty, plenty of others have had great results. I've remapped a C5 110 and a A Class A170 CDi, both were fantastic but I bought the maps in from a known tuner not a reseller. You need to be aware that flashing the car has it's risks. If it's a bad map it could damage the engine/clutch or simple waste fuel, could mean the vehicle won't pass it's emissions test or if it goes really wrong it could mean an expensive dealer fix. Some of these things could be hard to prove if you have it done for you and if you do it yourself you're on your own. I would expect the tuning gains on a none intercooled engine to be smaller due to the lack charge cooling and all the problems that poses.

Steve.

It is possible to get relative high power from the little 90 BHP engine.
First of all, i'll suggest you mount an intercooler, and forget the tuning-boxes. Get it remapped by a professional. It is possible to get around 130 BHP without an intercooler.
As you can see in my signature, my HDi goes well ;)

Great idea but how would you know whether the 'Professional' does no more than adjust the fuel pressure and/or the temperature sensor readings as is done by tuning box :?

If they are doing it in that manner, the BHP- and torque-curve will tell - You will never get a powercurve like mine, with a box, thats for sure.
Choose some with good reputation.

Not all tuning boxes are that simple. Mine sits between the ecu and the injectors and alters the injection timing depending on RPM which is pretty much the same thing as a remap.

I would admit a proper ECU remap by someone who knows what they are doing might be better but the difference in performance after I fitted my tuning box far exceeded my expectations.

I don't suppose you've got any pics or a guide to mounting an FMIC (I've done one on my old Saab 900T16 years ago) or even what sort of intercooler would be suitable to fit behind the bumper on a Berlingo Multispace?

I may go down that route later - for now, as you suggest, it's going up to Leeds for a proper rolling-road remap at RS Tuning up in Leeds over xmas. I've been pointed their way by a couple of happy customers from the Berlingo Forum. RS reckon without a boost increase, and to keep it nice to drive, a 25BHP Increase and 40lbft torque increase - 115 and 190 up from 90 and 150, which should make it a little more interesting :-)

sounds like a nice increase, for an intercooler it may well be worth scouring the scrapyards for one out of a 110, you can get the fixings and pipes for it then too and make a nice job of it for almost no money.

Is there room for an intercooler in a Berlingos engine bay? They were never available with a 110 2.0HDi.

Apparently they *were* available with a 110HDi, but they are rare - this is what the Berlingo Forum guys tell me anyway.

The ones I am aware of with ICs fitted have been non-standard, front mounted ones hidden in the bumper. It can be a bit of a ballache to fit one - there's a Citroen Specialist up near me who has one on his Berlingo Van and had to get all the pipework specialially made. Goes like stink though..

i would have thought so, it only sits in front of the engine rad, may be tight if you have A/C though obviously.
If not a little one out of a transit or similar would fit in anywhere. you could even get one of them in a MK2 air conditioned xantia's glovebox lol

Let us know how your remap goes MIke, they're not too far from me so if it gives a good result i might be tempted, have they given you a price yet?
