I doubt the piece of plastic holding the cable to the floor will cause an issue with the air bag light, but an intermittent loose connection in the plug and socket almost certainly will. Check for a good electrical connection within. Look...

I think my head gasket is leaking, probably because I ignored a heater matrix leak for too long. Any real problems to look out for here with head removal..?
I have heard that you can remove the matrix without dash removal, if you remove the glove box compartment by drilling out the plastic rivets.
There is a screw which holds the heater pipes...

There is a dowel in the front of the head that goes into a hole in the top engine mounting, this dowel also has a thread in it and takes one of the mountings four bolts.
If the belt covers are the early clip on type, the mounting will need to be removed before the head can be lifted off, this is beacuse of the engine front plate, if the covers are...

What did it start like before, A, if it used to start easey and ran without missfiring then the plugs were fine up to then and probably still are, B, if for some time there has been some missfiring then one or more plugs could be duff.
A sudden total refusal to start is more likely to be either as a result of air getting in to the injection pump...

How long have you had the car?
A parrafin smell can often mean it has actually been run on parrafin, which diesels will do quite happily but illegally (and vegetable oil).

Don't think I've got the pump timing right yet but does the parrafin smell meen its too advanced or too retarded?Sounds right though now.
Pump was a mile out last week and I'm wondering if the smell is from unburnt fuel in the cAT.Done about 20 miles though since then.

The block and the stroke are the same except that the bores are 3mm larger in diameter on the 1.9.
Not sure about the heads and exhaust manifold outlet angles, if not the same that could give you problems mating up to the downpipe.
The very early 205's were 1905cc anyway and later on were changed to 1769cc, so my guess would be that it will swap...

Could have a blockage, be air locked or the levers and flaps mechanism directing the air through it could be goosed, buy yourself a manual and try the air lock theory first.

To advance the timing, turn the pump body against the direction in which the pulley normaly runs, so that means the sticky out electric bit needs to go upwards.
Do all the timing studs fit in their respective positions at the same time.

I enquired at a peugeot dealer recently as there was someone on Ebay selling one who said it could be reprogrammed to suit another lock.
The dealer said they could order another curcuit board from within at about £50, but could not reprog.

Anyway in case anyone else has the prob its a tapered pin, you need to knock it out from the bulkhead side, i.e. towards the front of the car.
Hopefully my struggle will help someone else cos I had to do it on my own, cue sad music.

it sounds like a possible reverse light switch fault which is found screwed into the top or the front of the gearbox,remove the 2 pin plug from it & bridge out the terminals with a paperclip or similar & switch the ignition on if the lights come on its a faulty switch,if not you need to check if there is an ignition feed at one of the terminals of...

Sounds like your alternator is faulty.
Possibly worn carbon bushes.
How much mileage has your 306td done. Mines is on 126k and still on original alternator, but must be close to wearing out?
Dont know whether the bushes are easily taken apart on these alternators. If so, should be fairly cheap to repair. Alternatively, a reconditioned exchange...

Disk or drum?
If it's drums, it's happened before, it's more likely to be either a rusty handbrake mechanism inside the drum or the linings are worn to the point they need urgent replacement. You may be able to shock it off enough to move the car by hitting the drum with a hammer. You could break something doing this though if you're not careful....

Have you checked the manifold pressure sensing pipe from the intercooler to the pump.
On the lucas pump the overfueling diaphragm can split and cause these symptoms.

I would obtain a cheap used relay from a breakers and try that first, just make sure you get the correct one, sounds like the glow relay has gone tits up.

The 205 has a wishbone shaped clip which slides into a grove just behind the boot lid metal. Maybe the 309 is same.
Look round the inside of the lock as close to the metal as poss, and hopefully you will see it. Slide the wishbone out and the lock will drop out. It's a bit like a door lock fixing.

So you can't be getting the green light on the keypad then, what does it do.
I assume it was all working ok before you started work on the head, if so why come to the conclusion that a fault must have developed in it when it wasn't in use at the time.

the rear axle will bolt straight on but you need to replace the brake lines and add GTI rear compensators to get a balanced brake setup. I have heard of people using rear discs with drum lines but its not a good idea.

I have a 406 2.0 auto 2000 V. It has a problem with its idle. It wont idle above 500-600 rpm and is constantly nearing stalling because the lights e.t.c dim and brighten up again with a blip on the throttle. It frequently stalls when cold and when coming to a stop. Throttle cable and clips all present and ok. Could it be a stepper motor? And...

Whats the colour of the smoke, blue/grey or black and when does it most noticably appear.
Its normal to find oil in the turbo outlet pipe, most of it gets there from the breather and is simply sucked into the turbo and blown out again, and yes the intercooler/manifold seal does swell up but it shouldn't get blown out even so.

405 heater flap

Just recently bought a 1995 405 turbo diesel estate, all working fine except the climate control is playing up. When I set the recirculation switch to fresh air it sounds like the motor doesn't stop when the flap is fully open, there's a clicking noise that I assume is the gears being eaten away. I took the pollen filter out to check and sure...

306 rear speakers

hello
has anyone had any problems with the rear speakers on a 306
mine are in the parcel shelf with a bayonet type connector
to dissconect them
the only problem is one of the speakers doesnt work

Before you spend any more money - check that the relay isn't already working. A cheap 12V multimeter getween the glowplugs and earth should display a positive reading while the glowplug light as on and for a while afterwards. Incidentally Lidl supermarkets are doing a suitable one for £3.99 this week.

Now the weather has turned a bit parky, my 406 has become difficult to start. I have replaced the battery and glow plugs, to no avail. It is OK during the day once it has run, but in the mornings it take 4 or 5 goes to get it going.
Has anyone had to replace the glow plug relay on one of these?
Any other ideas?

Hmm...could be an attempt to sting you for some dosh, you must make sure that what he is on about is the actual fault, if not allready done, a compression test or better still a leakdown test will point to any such problems, get it done somewhere else though, shouldn't be the problem at that mileage but its not unheard of.

I've just had my 106 mk1 1.5D serviced at 80k and the poor starting in cold weather has been attributed to tight valve clearances by the Peugeot mechanic.
What does this mean and how does it occur?
Is this anything to do with tappets?
Is this a common occurence with relatively low mileage diesels?
Is there anything I can do to prevent a hefty bill...

I am sure you will have to check the diameter of the friction plate in relation to the pressure plate of the original. Also the splines in the centre of the drive plate to make sure they fit on the first motion shaft of the gear box.
You could check the part numbers in the catalogue to see if they are similar. I am sure they are the same clutch...

Does any one know if the 205Diesel/Turbo Diesel friction plate, fits into a 1.6 Gti??
I know that ill have keep the Gti release bearing and coverplate but just wanted to know if it fitted.
It'd be better for rallying than a standard clutch coz diesels have more torque!!

im selling it for cheap, because there is a small drilled hole in a water jacket. the car runs smoothe and fine, but it will probably overheat after a while without the water cooling the engine off. more details on the site.

The heater plugs remain on after the engine has started to aid cold running for a few moments, then are switched off by the relay.
This sounds like air is still is entering the fuel system. This is causing the engine to surge. Check the four allenscrews on the top of the fuel filter, as this is the only area that is disturbed when the filter is...

406 2.0L 16v gearbox - which one?

My 1997 pug 406 2.0L ST came to a grinding halt as I drove home last week. The gearbox seized and I came screeching to a complete stop with a big bang (which was the gearbox casing cracking).
Anyway the box is thrashed and I picked up a second hand box out of a 1996 1.8L 16v 406.
Now I thought that all these PSA gearboxes were the same on 1.8 16v...

Its normal for the cooling system hoses to be quite firm, but they shouldnt be rock hard, if this is so suspect head gasket problems or head problems again or a faulty expansion tank cap which is less serious. Unless you overfill the radiator tank, the lack of an expansion vessel shouldn't matter. (I believe the tanks are marked so they won't loose any water through expansion in normal use).
My 1994 ZX loses water all the time from the water pump. I had it replaced about a year ago, but I suspect the garage re-used the sealing ring. It doesn't loose to...

Are you sure the 1.9 has an ecu?
If so, it doesn't control the boost, only the fuelling. I have a 2.1, to which I have added a Bromleys tunit IV box. £375 + VAT and it should give a claimed 20+bhp. It certainly feels like it. 3rd gear at about 2250rpm is great.
If it isn't ecu controlled, you can still get the fuelling and boost increased manually...

i have an r reg 406 1.9td, can i use the method of tuning by increasing boost and fuel like other ppl do because mine has an ecu and i dont think the other 306's that have being tuned have and ecu?
also do you think it is safe and are there any ill effects?
