106 gti gearbag

i'm having trouble engaging gears on my '98 106 gti. i want to take the box out so i can replace all the bearings etc. i just wondered if any other gearboxes would fit as a direct replacement

the saxo VTS uses the same engine & gearbox.

only trouble is the saxo gearboxes are like hens teeth, same as the pug ones
