Anyone else got a LHD 70's GS

Post by tony trans am »

Still trying to sort my fuel gauge. anyone got a pic of their instrument dash wired up, I am missing a wire from the fuel gauge spade connector but do not know where it goes or comes from. The wiring diagram doesn't show it due to it being the printed circuit board.

Ouch! I've a '75 lhd Pallas, but busy enough not to want to heave the panel out. From memory, there are two (or more) plugs behind the panel that plug into the circuit board, blessed if I can remember which is the fuel gauge - should be able to trace the tracking though. Sender is probably no more than a positive wire through the ignition to gauge with an Earth somewhere.
Sorry, not much help.

There is one spade connector behind the fuel gauge that should have a wire connected to it, thats the one. If ever you pull it out let me know.

OK, I've pulled the panel out and taken some images - only a couple, as there isn't much to see - unless you like green wires! I had wanted to take a look at the speedo anyway, as it had a tendency to stick at 70mph (113kph) and go no further. Didn't find the cause though.

I'm not sure what spade you refer to, as the only spades outside of the circuit boards are for rheostatic speedo light; cigar lighter; light/wiper switches, and indicator unit. The wiring diagram in my Haynes shows a jaune (yellow) wire to the fuel gauge, as does the Citroen manual. However, they are all green save one brown that enter the plug connecting to the circuit board - but - look to the colours on the sleeves. Some may have migrated a little way down the wires, and any those with no colour sleeves in this image should be green for the first, and grey for the third.

This is how mine looks:

Clearly the jaune wire is fifth from left on the plug . . .

and fifth from right on the circuit board . . .

The black wires behind the board are believed to be Earth wires, but check with a mulitimeter set on continuity to check.

Hi, many thanks but your set up looks slightly different to mine, I’m presuming you have jaeger instruments where mine is Veglia. In the last pic where the green tape is on the right hand side I have a spade connector with nothing on it, but it has a mark on it where it has been connected. Plus I recently bought another set of instruments as I damaged the old circuit board messing about and this came with a wire attached to that spade connector but I just cannot find it’s connection. I think I will just have to pull the whole dash apart. Thanks again. I would post a pic but not sure how to on here.

Not sure why the first pic keeps flipping on its side, the second is the right way up. You’ll see the spade connector with nothing on it, it has a mark on it showing it was connected but I cannot find a wire.

Yes, my instruments are by Jaeger - different with the same results! Can only suggest to follow the tracking, or test the other spade connections for feed/Earth.
Does your fuel gauge not work at all? If so - is it the gauge - or the sender?

That is a known bug in the forum software. It only happens if the original picture is fairly small and the camera (phone) has provided a rotation instruction in the exif.

Yes reads full with ignition on but empty when I turn on the headlights.

Sounds like you may have an issue with corrosion and/or connections. Amongst other things fuse holder clips can cause wierd results that defy logic - unless your an auto electrician!! And I'm not - Mike Phelan would be one such bod, but he's over on the 2cvGB forum as a rule.

Not exactly 'on topic' but my last regular bike would extinguish the headlight whenever I applied the brakes. The cause was dirty ends of certain fuses (continental ceramic type) in the fuse holder. Current was bypassing the correct wires to take that of least resistance through the brake light circuit.

PS: The thought occurred to me last night that maybe your headlight on warning light is connected to the fuel gauge circuit somehow. Might this be possible?
