The problem you describe is caused by failure of the rear brake compensators, they do not allow anough fluid through to the caliper.
Theres one for each side, and you'll find them in-line on the brake pipes towards the rear of the car.
They are a fairly common failing.
I'm assuming by the way that the rear caliper...

That noise almost sounds as though it's in the final drive. Has the oil level been checked?
In recent times, I've had a phobia about this since I found in 4 cars, an average of about 300 - 600 ml of oil in transmissions which were supposed to have a capacity of 2 litres. All cars were garage serviced.

Do you use the car a lot? or does it do short journeys with lots of standing around? This could just be condensation build up and it will immulsify in filler cap/breather. Also check the breather pipe is 100% clear as a partial block can cause a build up of condensation as well.

If the stars are shining on you it may be one of the cables have sliped from its fixing restricting the operation. Or as you say it could be the fascia panel assembly. Just fixed this problem with my 1996 306 after living with it for a year. Right up under the drivers seat, there is an orange electrical connector going to the seat belt pre-tensioner. I disconnected it, and then reconnected it, making sure it was firmly in place. Problem is now gone.

Hello, just go to a breaker yard. They'll only charge you a bit, if you can get it off in one peice that is. You'll probably need a something like a blunt chisel, those rubber seals can rip if you try and pull them off.
Thats if there stuck on at all, just thinking, is it just pushed over the metal lip. Anyway thats what I'd do.

Hi Simon,
My ZX does the same (after a recent part change using none original equipment). I stopped it for a while by loosening and twisting the bracket before the rear silencer. The exhaust deos not seat correctly as I have mentioned before on the Citroen board. Can you get a friend to start and stop the car and listen along the side of the car....

My 1999 306td makes a slight konck when starting up or switching off particularly when hot.The noise seems to be consistant with engine movement.I have tried moving the exhaust by hand when the engine is off to see if i can hear the noise but no joy.Has anyone had any similar experience?Could it be the air con compressor?

If you are sure the glo-plugs are all OK and you are satisfied that the preheat system is right, try giving the fuel pump a prime with the hand lever. After priming try the starter. Mybrother in laws 405 is getting difficult to start from cold .
It is a xud non turbo diesel.I have checked heater plugs and they are ok.Mileage is around 150k.Ibelieve the valve clearances can tighten up andcause low compression .I wonder if this could be the problem.Would be glad of any suggestions.

A few days ago the warning light for the ABS came up on the dash whilst out driving. I did the normal tests-fluid topped up, all fuses and wires working well and all pressure connections ok. No leaking of fluid from any calipers etc. So I got back into to finish my journey with normal brakes only.

Water somewhere in door sill

There are usually drain holes where the sill meets the floor pan, if you have had it wax injected it can block these up, get something to prod through but dont scratch any paint from the inside or it will get infested with wire worm before you know it.

other than a break in wiring, unlikely though, I think there should be whats called a regulator - or similar named item - usually fitted behind the dash. I think some were called Stabilizers too. That would be worth a thought. The other thing is, it could be a bulk connector at the back of the dash - ie, thae main input terminal block...be...

Since running the tank dry - my car has been misfiring. Firstly i added injector cleaner to the next tank of petrol, this didn't help. I then changed the fuel filter, spark plugs and ignition leads (the plugs are ngk, but not the ones specified for my car (106 1.4 inj) by andyspares. I was unsure whether the engine is fussy about spark plugs?)....

As a follow up to my enguiries, I have surfed the net and discovered that there is a similar diagnostic tool product i.e Diag2000 and Lexia which is produced by Actia UK Ltd.

The permenant live (via ignition switch) going to the motor is there to keep it running untill it reaches its park point after being switched off, the permenant live is then disconnected within the mechanism and the motor stops, the switched live is then required to set it going again and to keep it going.

Hi Razner - It isn't on the radiator, it's on the engine. I'm more familiar with diesel layouts, but you'll probably need to move the air cleaner/ducting to get to it easily. I suppose you've checked the rubber stips on the inside of the door as well? Try hosing down the front door and looking for any signs of water on the inside.

Have a look at this.

If you take the motor out, take off the glass and carefully unhook the the cable ends from the sun roof tilt mechanism, it is possible to slide the cables along by hand. Look into the part where the motor turns and you may be able to see the offending part slide by. This only gives an idea of where the problem is of course....

wonder if anyone could assist. the sunroof on my 605 can't tilt or slide. the motor seem to be working as when i try to slide it, it moves down about 1/2 inch but then jams. can't do anything much other than moving to the close position.

Fixed it, many thanks to Michael Goodlad for the advice.
The idiot mechanic had accidentally pulled the pressure-sensing pipe off the intercooler whilst fitting the glow-plugs, and even after I'd shown him he still wouldn't believe that this would make the boost fail. I asked him if he knew a lot about turbos, he said more than enough , so I asked...

Recently, my 96 TD-S sprung a radiator leak so I took it to a local garage and got them to change it and the glow-plugs at the same time.
After picking it up yesterday, I discovered that the turbo no longer works. Although the car seems to run normally, there's no boost at all and I'm lucky to get 80mph out of it. Of course, the garage denies...

I have a 205 diesel, and the radiator top hose has a slight weep. I noticed the fan come on straight away recently on a cold start so disconnected the radiators heat switch, thinking I'm not going to listen to that and underheat, I'll check later.
However the plug was very wet round the connection pins. Any chance yours is wet too and shorting out...

Pug 405.... Radiator fan works fine...albeit a noisy bearing.. but it does seem to have a will of its own, predominatley deciding to come on after the car has been parked up for a while and will sometimes stay on for a good 20 mins or so. When the car was parked - the fan was off ( just make that point )
