I've just checked my level, and it has gone down from to top of the marker
to somewhere half-way down.in around 1000 miles.

got a wee problem with my ax, has been leaking oil for a month or so & is getting worse.
Had it in at the garage & they reckoned on the crankshaft oil seal being knackered, however this job (£120) proved to be a waste of money as the leak is still there & the garage dosent want to know.

Accumulator Sphere

On my BX there is sometimes a quick hiss when I undo the screw but if the accumulator is knackered I dont think this would be noticed. There should not be any discharge of fluid from the screw - all it does is open up a drilling in the regulator allowing pump output oil to return to the reservoir, taking the air with it.

Just been watching Traffic Cops on BBC1 where a bloke was pulled over for having no brake lights, and the officer then depressed his brake pedal and gave the guy a defect report becuase his servo wasnt working.

As far as i know none of the Citroen diesels have a separate fuel lift pump so there is no need to worry about this. I would have thought that the injection pump must go with the engine and if you use your non turbo one on the turbo engine it will behave as a non- turbo.

If you can actually see & access the wiring at any point, then simply cut here, & reverse connections. Even use some bits of wire for extension to ease the work. On completion any pressfit connections should be water protected (grease/antirust) and the wiring fixed with nylon ties.

My Xantia has always made this noise, both before and after replacing the accumulator sphere. Its particularly noticeable when revving the engine at low road speed, like when climbing a hill, as you mention. I've known other Xantias do it too and always assumed its completely normal !

Tyres. All same manufacturer and size? Reading the side of the tyre may show if you've an odd one. Check the pressures, too. Citroens always seem to wander a little, they are worse with shot rear arm bearings and a thorough check here may be worth your while.

A couple of revised editions Haynes BX are around.

I'm assuming it's from the front. A common problem is the drop link. It takes a bit of finding, but try it both with the weight on and off the suspension and see if that's it.

The locking hole refered to by Haynes is to prevent the crankshaft from turning while providing timing position only, it is not used for locking the crank to enable the auxiliary pulley bolt to be removed.
If you use it for this purpose and the tool used bends, you may be faced with removing the box and flywheel to retrieve it.

Pressure regulator may be internally leaking just like brake valve. Maybe its non-return valve is just dirty, or its two slide valves are worn. Other possible reason is that the difference between minimum and maximum pressure (normally 145/170 bar) is too small. Before changing it, it would be the best to connect its output to a pressure-meter and...

Hi, seeing as no one else has replied how do you know the thermostat is OK? In my exp they can look ok, work OK in a suacepan on the cooker, and yet if you replace them all of a sudden things work better. And they opnly cost a few pounds from Citroen, a good idea sometimes to fit a genuine one. They also come in different temp settings.

My understanding is that it won't - but my knowledge is limited to normally-aspirated diesels. Try posting on the BX technical forum, asking for Stefan's opinion. He's done most things possible to do with the 1.7 XUD turbo engines, if not the 1.9.

Depends really on how much its used. If your running it every day doing 20,000 miles a year then I'd imagine you should get about the same again.
On the other hand, if its only being used once a week and doing only 5,000 a year then in 5 years time you may find problems with the car that make it uneconomical to repair.

1. Probably the LHM needs changing - and would be best with hydraflush (available from Andyspares). Run this for about 3k miles, then switch back to LHM. See Haynes for changing the LHM.
2. The height corrector is sezied up. Get the front of the car up on ramps and get underneat. Behind the engine, about in the middle, connected to the roll bar...

the most severe problem is that the front suspension won't rise to the middle or upper middle setting on it's own.
i have to raise to the top (slow and a bit jerky) then select the bottom setting and while it's on it's way down i have to return...

BX Pressure regulator

You might have some difficulty actualy getting into it, the end cap has to be pushed in against heavy spring pressure, this moves its tapered edge away from the retaining internal circlip.
But this circlip is the plain type with no lugs to get hold of, so the operation is very difficult, thus you may cause more harm than good.
Might be a good idea...

well its been a few more days of gear crunching to set up this clutch operation pedal so smooth gear changes can be encountered once more
a new gen cit cable has been fitted but the standard nut and bolt adjustment was not enough, I had to place 1/4 washers within to give a smooth change

Check the oil FILLER neck & associated fume vent hoses, usually connected to the air filter can.
They may be clogged by mayonnaise or simply bent.

Not sure what would cause the light to flash faster than normal, but the level light on my Xantia sometimes comes on after the hot engine is restarted if I use synthetic or semi-synthetic oil. It never seems to do it with normal mineral oil though.

I have an ecu reader for Motronic 3.1, and you switch on for three seconds, off - then it starts to flash as you - repeat as required.

Mines been doing this past few weeks and the short term fix has been to pull fuse 21 from the drivers footwell fuse box and this disables the central locking.
Usual cause is said to be worn lock motors, but finding out which one is a nightmare and the units are about £50 each, plus may need a loom at £20 on certain early cars. I took both door...

Dismembered the brakes on the Xantia today to discover the bolts holding the caliper to the hubare torx. I've got Torx screwdriver bits but these are much bigger.
Can you get sockets to fit these? The only torx bits i've got are for screwdrivers. What size are they?

If I remembered correctly from Haynes, light turbo models (75 HP) are without an intercooler, while 90 HP models have one above the engine, and 2.1 TD models have an intercooler beside the radiator. Am I wrong ?

Might be oil in the clutch or clutch wear but first I'd have a very good look ay all the engine / gearbox mountings and in particular any tie bar (possibly on the back of the gearbox going to the body)
Is your clutch cable in good condition or does the pedal snag or feel lighter when released? - if so the clutch cable may be at fault.

I would try bleeding the brakes first, as air sounds the most likely cause. Is is really a delay, or just more travel than you are expecting? If you bleed and find no air, and the situation does not improve then you might have to look at replacing the brake valve, but you'll need some more tests to confirm if this really is worn out as a)...

No doubt you have checked the pressures, could be a brake sticking, trackrod end worn, bottom ball joint worn, suspension arm rubber bush or even pothole damage to suspension components.
Does it do it at all times or just when braking.
Does it make any difference if accelerating or slowing.

If you have a rev counter in your instrument cluster and if at approx. 70mph in 5th gear, and your revs are at 2500 approx. Then your turbo is just starting to boost to give you that kick, but if its below 2500 then you won't have that accelleration your looking for, which is common to all the td's.

If its the one with the rotating collar that holds the wings of the clip onto the rad outlet, wiggle and push the pipe towards the rad, only a couple of millimeters, then turn the collar anticlockwise looking at it from the right hand side of the car, this spreads the wings and disengages them from the rad, then wiggle and pull the pipe out.

The return pipes are available from specialists like andyspares - about £7.50 and the clip is also available. The clip is nearly impossible to fit and I ended up using a large jubilee clip. I have heard of others using cable ties. The clip is available - guide price £2.

I still reckon that the valve clearances could do with a look. The warm weather may have overidden the cold start setup but the fault is going to be something marginal and not set up just so.

Try leaving the aircon running, but turned up to 'hot'. Also, if it hasn't been changed, put in a new filter. The smell you're getting is caused by bacteria in the pipework.
