Me again !
Head gasket work in progress. Currently about to take belt off.
Have the cam pully ( top one ? ) locked.
Have the fuel pump pulley locked.
Haynes mentions the flywheel, the picture seems to show it being "bloody obvious" as to where the locking hole is.
However, I can't find it. Can anyone give me an "english" pointer ?
Please bear in mind that I am hopeless when it comes to names ( eg. flywheel, crankshaft etc ), but I'm guessing the flywheel is the opposite side ( eg. gearbox / clutch ).
Haynes mentions taking off the acc sphere, then the lower gearbox cover. Is this what I have to do ? ( I hope not, as access is a little - ahem - limited at the moment ! ).
This is now the only thing in the way of getting the head off..
Noticed some strange things as well, but that's a topic for another day..
Mat.

Help an idiot with a cam-belt ?

The locking hole refered to by Haynes is to prevent the crankshaft from turning while providing timing position only, it is not used for locking the crank to enable the auxiliary pulley bolt to be removed.
If you use it for this purpose and the tool used bends, you may be faced with removing the box and flywheel to retrieve it.
The timing hole (8mm) is in the block behind the starter motor, and is difficult to see, the locking peg goes through this hole and engages with a corresponding hole in the back of the flywheel.
The propper method of locking the crank so the pulley bolt can be removed is to bolt on a locking pawl that engages with the flywheel ring gear.
My advice would be to remove the starter motor (3 alan bolts), you will then be able to get at the timing hole plus bolt something in place to scotch the ring gear, or better still nip out to an accessory shop and get the tool for the job, about a tenner.
The bottom plate is only thin sheet steel held it place with three M6 bolts, but with the suspension down you wont be able to get at them.

Cheers Dave,
I bought the proper kit ( Draper ) the other week, so I have it all.
First time doing anything major, and as allways, it's a steep learning curve. The car has been off the road for three weeks now while I 'get time' to sort it out at weekends.
Just started chucking it down though !!
I'm borrowing the other halfs AX 998cc, same journey, same speeds.. Xantia:40mpg, AX, 53mpg, but I WANT MY XANTIA BACK !!!
