Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

Thanks for the link, ECAS would most likely have been my second attempt. As it was I got 30mm x 9mm from Suffolk Fasteners, here in Ipswich - 5 for £10 incl postage, so I save a fiver or more over ECAS prices. but useful to know that they were also used for the handbrake...

I always do my tracking with a threaded rod slid inside a length of steel electrical conduit. Adjust the length so it just touches the widest part of the tyre about level with the bottom of the wheel, a brick is about the right height, slide it to the back of the wheel and observe the gap or other wise, about 1mm is about right for most wheels...

Rightio, picked up an '82 GSA Pallas, as usual, there are things to sort out - any input would be appreciated.

1. Smells of fuel when sitting in the garage (yesterday was particularly bad, after getting stuck in the traffic for an hour - it had slight dieseling when I shut it off).
I can also smell a bit of fuel inside the cabin. Any ideas?

I had similar with mine. No indicators or instruments. After some investigation, I found it was the ignition switch. A bit of a pig to change, but one changed all was well.
Thanks - I did look at the ignition switch for a different reason (offset from the key hole) and it looked a bit awkward. I hope I won't have to change it, fingers crossed......

Fitting GSA rear spoiler

I'm getting around to fit the rear spoiler - I bought it a second hand one from Chevronics but left it in the garage until now.
Now I had a look at the service manual and the spoiler itself, it needs 5 special brackets to be pop riveted first.
Unfortunately the spoiler didn't come with any of the fitting hardware so I'm well screwed - has anyone...

The spoiler actually has a provision for wiper motor hole but looks very ugly from what I've seen on the internet photos. Mine is a second hand unit from Chevronics and it came with the hole butchered open. I managed to find a rubber plug to fill that (as well as wiper motor hole on the hatch).

So I finally got around putting back the sunroof - as some may recall I got burnt by lazy and irresponsible (coming from me, it says a lot) previous owners, who initially sealed the sunroof with sealant and subsequent owners who didn't get around to do anything about it. The result? Rust, lots and lots of rust...

The seal carrier was a toast, 75%...

The thing is, although I have had a lot of cars, including a number of Citroens (am familiar with flat air-cooled engines, such as that in the GSA) I'm not at all familiar with the rest of the vehicle.

Hi all,
My car came with only one set of keys - and I'm one of those people who is prone to misplace stuff so I'd like to have a spare set cut and stashed away somewhere.
The door key looks fairly generic but the ignition key seems a bit unique in that it's fairly thick for its overall size - would a corner locksmith have a blank to cut these keys...

Hi

It finally arrived. First impressions compared to xantia:

1) Steering is heavier
2) Noise in the cabin is much more loud
3) Height correctors work much quicker, almost instantly
4) The car is more stable on uneven road, the xantia is more like a boat.
5) Low speed uneven road is softer but some potholes and riddles are sharp
6) braking feels...

My car arrived last week and it is a very good car but the famous y-pice has a little hole. The seller told me that it needs replacement. My plan is to grease it with some exhaust grease and wrap some exchaust tape to cover the hole and keep the car going. how well does C matic work with GS/A flat 4?

I'm just curious to know how well it is matched to the GS/A engine.
My (limited) impression is that GS/A engines need to be worked hard at high revs to get it going but how do C matic owners find it?
Also, how does it compare to CX C matic, which has a bit more displacement on its side.

Years ago BP Technical confirmed to me on the phone - when I was making an enquiry about Duckhams Hypergrade 20W/50 - that 5-litre containers marked 'Diesel' and 'Gasoline' were actually the same stuff, and that packaging was tailored to reassure purchasers that they were getting something specific. Honest, if nothing else.

right - the car is missing the front 1/4 width chin spoilers - where it would have been mounted, the flanges had been torn a bit and the fasteners (or possibly blanks) are missing.
did all GSA come with the front spoilers or was it optional depending on trim level (club, pallas, x3 etc etc)?
and are they worth putting back on?

My insurance on the GSA is due in about three months time, but 'money supermarket' have jumped the gun and sent me estimates for renewal , they range from £104.50 to £ 1908.00. The latter sounds a little over the top!! I think I might just ignore that one. Gerry

I need to buy new brakes & tyres for the Ami Super. Several questions to ask if I may ..

A. 135 or 145 tyres.? rolling resistance is probably just a little less and the steering may be a little lighter with the 135 section. But what's your opinion.?
B. Citroens were designed to run on Michelin tyres. That then would be the obvious first choice...

Interesting that 2cy has had steering linkage issues - my last MOT tester mentioned (though not an advisory) that there was a slight wheel bearing play in the front right. I checked for play with wheel clear of the ground and could detect no play whatsoever in the top/bottom apsect (12/6 o'clock), but definitely some in the 9/3 o'clock. Wheel spun...

Hi, My Father who is in his 80's and getting top a point where I need to help him
out quite a bit has a 1300 GS Hatchback and it runs like a bag of bolts, things we know
fuel supply is good and filters are ok plugs are good to the car starts up and runs well its just very lumpy.
perhaps a carb rebuild any ideas please?

I inherited three brand new gearbox mainshafts for GS/GSA (according to the vendor) with the spares that came with my CX.

Looking at the parts book, they do look like the a GS part, but I have no part numbers on the packing.

I have put some photos here:

Not from Cx not from GS(A).

Gs has a bevel pinion on the end of the shaft, not a helical one.

Cx has 1st gear tooting like removable wheel, not integrated like in your pictures.

Homework time before the ordering.

if you require new belts and tensioners
i have just purchased a set of belts for i think £36 squid from AJAYS motor factors,
and although Chris Salter supplied the tensioners this time, they are still available from GSF for around£13 quid each, as opposed to ( i have heard ) someone that sells them for i think...

Tyres; Tubes in Tubeless

I have in the past, and more recently, fitted tubes into tubeless tyres that showed signs of deflating slowly due to rim corrosion failing to seal on the tyre bead. My local tyre depot had no problems fitting tubes into my tubeless tyres on the Dyane (due to the aforementioned reason for leakage) and are quite happy to fit tubes into the GS wheels...

I've had done it myself (fitting tubes into tubeless rims) on various cars, but the advice I was more recently given is that the valve holes of some alloys are a different shape, and that the inside of the hole needs to be rounded before fitting tubes, otherwise they chafe on the hard edge. Not so much of a problem with steel or extruded alloy...

GS difficult to start

My GS is a pain to start from cold and needsway too much cranking to get to go which is of course wrong. Plugs and leads are relatively new though i baulked at the points due to the need to take the dizzie off. I'll be doing that this week. However, I suspect compression may also be an issue so I've tested number 4 which is only 80psi (5.25kg/m3)...

Here we have a GS 1300 V-reg Estate 1980 free to good home.
The engine runs very well which is a good start but she will need a bit of work
and of course will need to be trailered away. could be driven onto the trailer.
The suspension lifts as it should.
The Car is in Burton Latimer Northamptonshire very close to Junction 10 of the A14....

Mice that is, under the bonnet. Little devils are in there even after a couple of days parked on the drive. Problem is, we are surrounded by fields and hedges, and the spare wheel with a rag in for cushioning the jack and oil bottles make an ideal nest for lodgers! Cute little devils, and cheeky with it, but they're not house/car trained and pee...

I have a y reg 1983 citroen gsa in blue requiring someone to love it again.
Its in a garage nice and dry and still all there.Its been there for 14 years and the rear subframe was half removed.
I bought it but can not find the time to collect and refurbish it. :shock: .

Hello,

As part of a load of spares that came with my recently-bought CX, I acquired a secondhand GS/GSA tinted windscreen.
I had a look at it the other day, and it seems to be in good condition with no chips.

Would any of you GSA owners like it as an insurance against a future broken screen?

I need the space, so stuck it on EBay for a tenner,...

She gets used three or four times a week, and starts fine on full choke. Takes a while to warm up, but after three or four miles the choke is completely off.

Until about ten days ago. She started to fire up very reluctantly, and almost on two pots. Left to chug-a-lug she'd gradually get going, though touching the throttle would cause a stall....

Speaking of infestation - took the Weber off the spare engine yesterday (been under a sheet outside for yonks). Spindles were seized, but chokes full of rat bait put there by some squatting mouse for storage. Never got any rent either . . . Damn cheek.

Thanks both. Checked the timing with the Xenon and it was only a couple of degrees out. Certainly runs a lot sweeter especially in the low range. Such a nice car to drive - popping out to the shops just a mile away generally ends up with 15 or 20 miles on the clock.

Popped a new set of pads in the front brakes too. Had a leakage a while back and...

Well it feels that way.

Went out to start the GS at 2.30am and it was no joy at all. So in went the lawnmower can just in case the fuel gauge was telling fibs, but fuel was getting through, so it was more hope than anything else. With a 3am start, I then proceed to flatten the battery. Dig out a pair from the shed. Mess around with the Ducellier...

It was. I was in half a mind to go expecting a low turnout, but pleasantly surprised. Immaculate Rile Elf there, along with a equally immaculate two tone Riley 1.5. A superb VW camper, spoilt by dropped chassis and wide chrome wheels (why do people do that?). Lots of vintage(?) pic-nic sets too.

Stuffed the boot full (including some tools), planted the roof box on (also filled), and off - three and a dog - from Shropshire to Badenoch and Strathspey for a family catch-up - and back home.

Lots of rain North of Glasgow on the way North, but the rest of the week fine warm weather. Car never missed a beat. All in a total of 1,065 miles...

Okay, okay. I didn't read the parts book properly and order the right bits.

The plan of action was to replace 4 bits of the distributor the other day. I'd order a Valeo D103 cap and rotor set and a D221 contact breaker and condenser set from mister-auto.ie

Unspecified suspension fluid leak

Well, we got it back up in the air and took a look. The unspecified leak is causing a wetting of the subframe, and there was a little puddle (a desert spoonful) of LHM on the deck.
It appears to be coming from the junction tucked up against the lower inner wing above the steering rack end. There's a rubber...

I've got some dead wipers, but haven't delved into it yet. I might need another wiper motor whilst I look into it.

At the moment there is no movement when switched to first or second speed at the switch. I don't think it's the fuse as it has a 4 fuse box and from memory the clock works on the same circuit.

at my workshop for some TLC

i got round to tinkering on her today, got her running well sort of, at least more than she were anyhow,
dont think she has ran since 96 or 98,

aparently she has had several people attempt to get her doing, even bin sitting in a workshop/car repairer's who gave up trying, now said garage is closing down and...
