What oil for a 1299cc GSA engine?

Post by Northern_Mike »

Well, the subject says it all really. I believe the original spec was 20/50, but I'm finding it a bit expensive and rare these days.

as others say there are lots of company s selling 20/50 oil,
just mind you do not use Duckhams, because when G'zzz were a curent car it was always said if using this brand it could blow your oil cooler, as it keeps its viscosity at high temperatures,
also i belive the Hal frauds classic 20/50 might be Duckhams as it is green, so i would be cautious of using this also,

it also pays to find a Purflux oil filter ( LS450A ) which was OE equipment and has a built in one way valve,
and some other brands do not

You are so right Malcolm :)

Incidentally, Duckhams was acquired by BP a fair few years since.
Halfords buy their oil from Comma (as do ASDA, IIRC)

Thanks for all the help chaps.

Opie have Silkolene 20/50 for £21.60 delivered for 5 litres, which isn't bad at all. I just wondered if anyone had used a more modern oil in a G seeing as I'm sure oil tech and detergents have come on a fair way since 1970 :-)

Word on the street says it's just repackaged Comma 20/50.

Comma Oil & Chemicals Limited ("Comma") was a wholly owned subsidiary of Esso Petroleum Company, Limited ("EPCo"). Comma was sold in March 2012 to Cosan S.A. Industria e Comercio ("Cosan")

Duckhams was a BP owned brand since the 1970s. Recently they were looking to offload it.

Anyway I chuck what's to hand in, which is Fuchs Titan Syn 10W40 diesel oil.

the only green engine oil i have seen was Duckhams, so when i saw the Hal frauds classic 20/50 was green i thought maybe it was Duckhams also,

why use a diesel 10/40 semi and not the universal 10/40 semi

Maybe that's the assumption the manufacturer wanted people to make? :?:

Err, got a good deal  at the time on 8 x 5L of the stuff. I'll look at the back of it later, but it is spec'd correct to petrol/diesel.

because "diesel" oil has more of the anti wear metallic elements in it ( ash content), these have been reduced in "petrol" oil to suit modern catalyst engines. There also tends to be higher detergent content in diesel spec oils keeping the cold areas, such as rocker chest or oil cooler, cleaner longer. All of which suit older aircooled engines as they can be quite hard on oil as they work over a greater heat range than a modern watercooled engine.

if you contact comma and the likes their Gurus often spec Diesel "Fleet" oils for us older aircooled people

All that "older engine" oil in the cheap bike warehouse is just a way of screwing a few more ££ out of the classic market IMHO.

Hi

1299 cc gsa is arriving soon. The previous owner said that he used 15w40 oil. Is it ok, or should I change it for 20w50. Does the 20w50 have to be mineral, semi or full synhetic?

Original spec was for 20/50 mineral. That's what I use. 15w40 is OK for winter when temperatures are below 10°C on a regular basis. Some people swear by synthetics, some swear at them. If there are roller bearings in an engine I have heard say the long chain polymers can cause rollers to skid, rather than roll. They are good for plain bearings, though better for engines designed for them, say post 1990ish.

Dear Raul. I worked on Citroen,s in the late ' 70 s to the early ' 80 s.
We used to used 20/50 mineral oil :)
I can,t see that using 10/40 would have too much of a difference.
However Raul, I personally use on all my cars 10/40 fully synthetic oil  but I also use " Wynn s " engine oil additive and " Wynn s" gearbox oil additive.

Years ago BP Technical confirmed to me on the phone - when I was making an enquiry about Duckhams Hypergrade 20W/50 - that 5-litre containers marked 'Diesel' and 'Gasoline' were actually the same stuff, and that packaging was tailored to reassure purchasers that they were getting something specific. Honest, if nothing else.

I have run PSA diesels on Duckhams 20W/50 for years, with oil and filter changes at 6000mi. On our BX19RD, bore wear (top-lip) was virtually undetectable at 177,000mi (when I replaced the head), and cross-hatching was still visible on the bores.

20W/50 should be one of the least expensive oils on the market, and always is in supermarkets and motor factors here.

Good advice to stick with Purflux OE screw-on filters (PSA's own are Purflux), because these do have the anti-drain-back valve - the rubber flap you can see through the ring of small holes in the filter base. This keeps oil in the lubrication system when the engine is stopped, importantly in hydraulic tappets, where fitted.
