Some similarities to a problem I had on the wife's non turbo 205 we used to have. I had done a service, fuel filter change etc. The bleed screw was slackened following bleeding procedures. Then it kept cutting out regularly. Anyway, a friend stuck his head under bonnet and said that he could hear a hiss, over the diesel running I don't know. It...

Sorry to have to say this but I think the head gasket is the problem, the fact that there's nothing in the oil means little, the gasket can fail between cylinders, between coolant channels and cyliners or between oil gallerys and cylinders.
I had exactly the same happen on a ZX td a while back, nothing untill the engine was reved then great big...

So if the radiator is leaking, you must have been having to top up the header tank fairly frequently? Although I don't have much to say in their favour, there are leak sealing treatments that can cope with small leaks.

my zx 1.4 does this as well. I would put it down to condensation on the plug leads and nothing to worry about. as long as it doesnt do it when the engine is at normal temp.

I've never known the blower automatically run as fast on heating as it does on cooling. On a hot summers day, it really goes for it, but on a cold day it's much steadier, generally speeds up a little after a few minutes, but never full belt. I find generally I don't touch the controls much, I leave it set at 21-22 degrees and leave it on auto all...

Have a gander at this, you would need between 1100 and 1200 watts for a 2.0l, roughly 1.5 hp.

It's either your plug leads; best found by removing the centre cover on the rocker cover and starting the car at night and slowly raising to a fast idle, then look down the area beneath the cover for the tell tale sparks. Or, where the LT plug goes into your coil.
This plug contains + as wll as - terminals. Grime gets down inside the actual socket...

We have a 98 XSI, and the idle can be erratic if the battery has been flat, or it has stood far a few days. It sorts itself out after a couple miles after the ecu does its 'learning process'.
The stepper motor can be cleaned as a temporary measure.
Paul.

OK, perhaps I need to get out more ! It seems that the reservoir was low ! Not low enough to stop water to the windshield but low enough to stop the headlight washers popping out of the bumper when the lights are on. Oooppsss.....

OK sorted out now. Still dont know what they are called, but the Pug garage said they were in the region of 50 quid !!! Something I can do without I thought. One of my work colleagues suggested getting into it ourselves; nothing ventured nothing gained ! Got it apart eventually, prised the motor out, dismantled the motor itself to find the...

Driving to work today, had a bit of a surprise. Could hear some beeps which seemed to be coincidental with my seat moving in all 3 axis !!! Where does the control box for the seat/mirror memory live ? Must be a dodgy connection. Didnt notice if the passenger mirror worked or not, too busy trying to concentrate on driving with the seat motoring me...

Judging by the amount of time and hassle I had changing my own, I'd be charging more than that :-)
Mat.

Check that the handbrake and low fluid indicator don't use the same warning light.

Hi All,
My 306 1.6 XR is suffering from intermittent lack of PAS. It is most noticible during reversing when the steering is turned fully to the left. The steering stiffens during reversing with full left lock and then frees up when the steering is turned to the right again accompanied by a clonk sound. Everthing reverts to normal after the clonk...

Its possible to get a specialist to decode the ecu. A friend had to have his decoded. If it helps I can ask who did it etc. Most had the code 1111 as i've ever noticed.

If you've had a driveshaft changed and a new oil seal wasn't put in the housing, that might be the cause of your oil loss. Give the transmission a spray with gunk and when it's all clean, any leak will show up. To check the oil level, put the car on level ground, remove the n/s wheel and any wheel arch liner covering the end of the engine bay....

Get ready for a shock.
The transformation from normal diesel to almost petrol engine performence is very good. Quieter than the average diesel, very good fuel consumption.. again better han the norm.

I have recently done this and can't for the life of me remember the size, something like a 15mm. You should get a full range of combination spanners (8mm - 19mm)before attempting any job on a french car as they use all sorts of different sizes.
My spanners were slightly too fat, but a bit of forcing solved the problem. You could always buy a...

Pug 405 166k miles. Near-side needs replacement. I was hoping to mark ends of torsion bar / anti-roll bar against trailing arm to retain ride hieght etc. and basically pull trailing arm off bars and out of suspension cross tube. Is this a reasonable job or a pig? Someone mentioned cross tube problems due to rust/age (10 1/2 years).
Would a full...

hi, i have a 2000 206 aswel and my central locking started playing up. i took it to peugeot and it was the central locking actuators so the whole system had to be replaced at around £200 for the part plus the time it cost them to diagnose the fault! the car is a nightmare, only had it 4 months and its been in and out of the garage constantly!
but...

sounds very like a stepper motor fault to me,but if it is the ECU i dont know anyone off hand who repairs them, try a search on google, but the code for the transponder imobiliser will have to be programed into it (if it has an imobiliser that is)

General service, plugs, oil and air filter, antifreeze is a peice of p**s. Take you an hour tops with a basic tool kit. Go to locol motor factors and buy the bits £30 ish in total. The timing belt is a little more difficult but people say its about £150 at the most to do by a spcialist. It only costs £15 itself so its the labour your paying for....

According to my 306 Haynes, the engine number is situated on the front face of the cylinder block, and can be found in the following locations...... d) 1.8 & 1.9 litre diesel engines - stamped on a plate which is riveted to the centre of the block

The friction surface on the inside of the drum is probably worn to a larger diameter than spec. producing a lip at the edges and it could be this that is catching as the drum rotates.
If so you will have to grind or file it off providing the drums are not too far oversize.
Manually adjust the shoes to just clear the drum after grinding, auto...

If it's any help - I have a 1998 R reg Xantia which probably uses the same system as the 406. It has one touch closing/opening of the driver's window but doesn't operate in conjuction with the door locking.

You're right to be worried; it is not right, they should not under any circumstances whirr. They've screwed it up possibly big time.
The noise could be several things.
Rubbing on the cover.
Tensioner on the way out.
Pump on the way out.
Overtightened belt.
In the case of the latter, this means that the belt is running under a higher tension than...

The digital clock will prise out from the right hand side, using a broad thin screwdriver. The connector unplugs from the rear of the clock. The dealers have a tool to get the radio out but you can make similar from some thin rod.

Took it to the main dealer, it was a relay... it cost £60... went on the extended warranty... cheers!

When it eventually starts, what are the characteristics ?
I would prime the fuel system using the bulb in the engine bay, and then try and start. If it seems stuttery, then I would suspect a fuel pipe leak ( air getting in ).
I am having the same problems at the moment ( Xantia ), I have a slight leak in a tiny filter thingy at the bottom corner...

THE VALVE GEAR CAN GET NOISY WHEN THE CAMBELT IS COMING TO THE END OF ITS LIFE I.E. ITS STRETCHED A LOT. AND IF YOUR 405 IS ONE OF LATER ONES THE CAMBELT NEEDS TO BE CHANGED AT 72000 MILES SO YOUR WILL BE 1000 OVER. EARLY ONES ARE 48000 MILES. IF I WERE YOU ID GET IT DONE ASAP BEFORE THE ENGINE GOES POP WHEN IT BREAKS.

Kris
I seem to remember that a BX GTi or 16V use the same pump, if yours is a Bosch drop a line and I'll check as this same pump is also used on many BMW's. Should be a Bosch number on the old pump.

The xantia handbook shows 2 types, one with a D/N button and the other (like mine) has a C button and an S button.
Can't help you re: interchangeability, and I didn't know about this 'automatic' mode.
C = Change Code
S = Enter Service Mode (e.g. 2nd code you can give to someone, but they can't change your original code)
D/N = Defer/Neutral (could...

With regards to the cambelt change, what engine is it?
The recommended change interval can be a bit vague though. I have seen everything from 36k to 90k quoted for the same BX XU engine (the 90k was by a dealer).
The general consensus though is, if you are not sure when it was last done then have it changed. Better safe than sorry.
An S reg...

According to car-by-car info for a 1999-2004 406 there was indeed a recall due to boot lock defect.
Plenty of other recalls listed too for this model

It shouldn't need to be a dealer part, but I recently bought some suspension parts from a motor factor for my 406, which were half the price of the dealer parts, and they were faulty.

Hi,
why not get a whole replacement filter carrier, complete with plunger?
There ust be some in local scrap yards.
Antony

Did you clean the carb when you had it apart. Not a normal bog standard clean, a REAL clean out, using compressed air through all the channels and jets followed by carb cleaner and then some more air. Your problem sounds like a blocked primary jet or emulsion tube. The Haynes Carb manual (not sure if its still in print) covers it very well.
If you...

Too warm out there mate. find the resistance of the efi's temp sensor hot and cold then if the resistance rises as it gets hot, shove a resistor in parallel, if it falls, series. email me if you need more help but I think it will enrich it a bit.

This is odd! It would indicate that there's a blockage between the tank and the bulb. Has the bulb been replaced the wrong way round? There's an arrow on it showing the flow direction.

Correction to the website address. Should read:-

theres a 406 in my family with the same problem, if anyone could help it would be great

Hi, just wondering if anybody has ever repaired the window winder mechanisms on a Peugeot 306 (L Reg). I’ve never really had time to do anything on my car till now, so I am trying to fix the little daft faults while I can. I have a feeling these mechanisms are the cable type. I was in the car the other day sweating like hell cos the window winders...

The best plan is to bleed both rear cylinders after you have fitted the new one. If you don't have something like an Eazibleed then get an assistant inside the car to depress the pedal, shouting down whilst you open the bleed, you close it, then you shout up when the bleed is closed, and repeat the process until the pedal goes hard.
I would not...

the black plastic covering on the sunroof seems to have lifted off the car roof and has a gap where the water is coming in and is affecting my c/l. i was wondering if there is an alternative to replacing this plastic cover as it would cost me £380 for the sunroof kit plus labour (to be done by a Peugeot dealer). or does anyone know where i can get...

Having problems getting a 205 GTi to run. Fuel pumps is dead but works happily with a wire run directly from the battery. I've changed the tachymetric relay and the ignition switch but still nothing. Am I missing something obvious?

There's no relay for the rear fogs, the feed comes through the same circuit as the front fogs. This confused me, as I don't have front fogs and my rear fogs weren't working up until last weekend so I set aside an evening to digest the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual.
My original problem was that while the fogs didn't work, the switch...

I've been looking through the gsf catalogue for peugeot 406 2.0L 16V parts, and I'm wondering if they also apply to the 406 coupe 2.0L 16V. I know some parts won't eg. anything relating to the exterior because the shape is completely different. But what about parts like radiators, starter moters, cambelts etc???
Also does anyone know where I can...

hi guys,
have been having this problem ever since i bought the car in 96 (pug 605 SVi XU10J2 engine with CAT) but never actually paid much attention to it.
my 'K' light comes on for a fraction of a minute then goes off. (eg
going uphill or when i have to slowdown suddenly while driving very fast - sometimes). everything is normal during...

this used to happen alot on the early Xantia HDi's when the fuel system is being primed when the ignition is switched on.it was cured by replacing the filter housing & filter (i think they come together).

I had a similar one on my BX and was pointed at the mounting frame by someone not from the rattling viewpoint but the leaking one; curing the rattle was a fringe benefit.
Slacken all the screws (torx head) holding the frame into position & push upwards (or get someone to push it for you) and with it in position, retighten the screws.
With the BX,...
