I doubt the piece of plastic holding the cable to the floor will cause an issue with the air bag light, but an intermittent loose connection in the plug and socket almost certainly will. Check for a good electrical connection within. Look...

For the interior lights is quite normal for a 306. Not sure about the main beam, I think that only dipped headlights are only useable without the key in. And the problem with that???

On my 94 306 XTdt, the front and rear courtesy lights and map lights only work when the key is in the ignition and turned to A, yet I can put the full beam on without the key. Do your radio and lights work ?
I'd be looking at thinks like fuses and relays, especially to do with the starter motor, and check all the connections.
I presume this car is too old to have an immobiliser ?

Just an update on my diagnostic light problem.
Having taken the car back to the dealer where it was purchased from he said he would take it to a pug dealer to have the fault code read. However having kept the car for a day and a half it appears he just used a Gunsons type hand held fault code reader, which showed no fault. Within 10 minuets of...

I have just brought a 406 2.1 td.
The Engine auto-diagnostics light has come on 3 times today over a distance of some 180 miles.
At initial switching on of the ignition this lamp lights flashes off very briefly twice then stays on until the engine starts. Are these 2 brief of flashes normal?
The light then came on and stayed on about 10 minutes...

I'd suspect two things here..
1) Some kind of emissions control ( EGR ) kicking in, dodgy sensor ?
2) Your timing may be ever so slightly out ?

Yes it is, you need to have the car in neutral, and let it roll until approx 5 - 10 mph, then stick it in 1st, and promptly lift the clutch.
It will splutter a little, and burst into life, probably with a small mushroom cloud behind you !
Of course, you shouldn't do this with newer diesels ( those with a cat ), or petrols with cats, because...

Burnt contacts in the solenoid, it doesn't just push the starter pinion gear into mesh with the flywheel ring gear, it also closes the contacts at the end of its travel, these contacts switch the motor on.

Quick update for you: went to the scrappie yesterday and bought a new IP assembly for £30. Took the old one out, replacement in and everything's working fine and accurately now. As for the fuel filter light, I just took the bulb out :-)

You'll need to find out a bit more about the recon. Was it the original engine that was done, and why? At 100K it isn't likely that it was worn out. Things that would require a recon would be cambelt breaking or over-heating. Either of these things - you would need to know how well it had been done.

The 205 sunroof has got a pressure tank fitted down on the inside footwell on the passenger side. remove the inner panel and you should see a plastic tank looking thing. release the hose, this will deflate the seal so you can at least shut the roof. As for why the lever is not releasing the valve, check to see if any plastic has broken from the...

Seems to me like its pulling a spot of air in from somewhere, when these engines rev by themselves its usualy down to air getting in, but only when the injection pump is Lucas/Rotodiesel, Bosch equiped engines wont do this.
Diesel is very much less volatile than petrol so does not readily evaporate, even when spilled on a hot engine block it can...

more than likely an intermitantly faulty road speed sensor at the back of the gearbox,this is what gives the speedo its reading.the engine ECU also uses infomation from this sensor which would explain the poor running when the speedo cuts out.

The front seat belts on our 306 are starting to be a little reluctant to wind back into their housings when you get out of the car.
Does anyone have any advice on how to lubricate then without cosmetic (or worse) damage, before we start trapping them in the doors, etc?

If its a 1.9TD it will have a pull type clutch fitted, these are notorious for getting heavy during the later miles.
Same clutch fitted on my Xantia 1.9TD, I had the same problem for a few thousand miles until I got cheesed off with it and changed it, light as a feather now.
As the clutch wears the diaphragm spring changes geometry as it takes up...

how did you program the key ? reading your other post i get the impression that you dont have the transponder code,as far as im aware it is not possible to program keys without this code.i dont imagine shorting out 2 ECU pins will bypass the imobiliser (more likely to damage it).does the key light on the dashboard flash when the ignition is...

Don't know where it's coming from, but try pouring water over the boot lid at specific places, colouring the water with food dye. If you don't cover too much of the boot at once, it may give you an idea where the water's coming in. Worked for my 205.

I'm trying to dismantle the primer plunger to replace the top seal. I can see a plastic ring just below the rim of the housing the plunger goes into, which butts up to the housing and has several slots around it. Anyone know how I can get the plunger past this, or else remove it so the plunger will come out?

Bad luck there Dai, it gets worse I'm afraid cos' the camshaft always leaves at least two valves partialy open in any position at best, so spinning the engine would cause the pistons to hit them.
Take the rocker cover off and see it the camshaft is still in one piece, if it is try turning the engine by hand only while feeling for compression on...

Hi,
Where abouts on the bulkhead? Drips are almost impossible to locate unless you have the car on a ramp. The fluid finds almost impossible routes sometimes and you may find that the leak is coming from the other side of the engine bay altogether.

In my experience the insurance valuation is usually less than you would value the vehicle (and sometimes a lot less than you were hoping for). But if the vehicle is worth less than £1000 or so to you I have found it better to accept the valuation in anticipation of a quick settlement.

Hi, do the hdi engines have a heat exchanger type oil cooler or a proper oil cooler (like a radiator)?
If the former then these can be problematical as I found out once on a Golf GTI. The casting in the heat exchanger had gone porous causing the oil and water to mix. Strange how water is not contaminating the oil though, I would suspect this to be...

if there is a problem with c/locking & e/windows at the same time the first thing i would check is the wiring/connectors at the door pillars,pull back the rubber sleeve & visualy inspect all the wiring.you may find 1 or more broken wires causing various problems.the locking may be cutting itself off after a few attempts to stop the motors over...

Well, oil is getting burnt somehow !!
If it's getting into the combustion chamber, it will be burned whatever the conditions, so you'd see smoke all the time ( in various degrees ).
You say 'it doesn't use any oil', well, it obviously does, but aparently in very small amounts.
I would check the air intake system, and I would suspect a turbo oil...

Early 1996 406 1.9 DT with air con. Done 120k miles, most journeys being 20 miles on traffic free roads.
Problem is that it emits a large quantity of grey/blue smoke once it has been idling for a couple of minutes and is then driven off, smoke clears within five seconds, there is no smoke at start up or when on the move which seems to discount...

I wish I could help but I have the same problem, I've just bought a P reg 406 without a handbook and my immobiliser is set to a code with 4 numbers all the same, this seems to be common practice with some car dealers .... someone out there must know how to change it.

My Dad mentioned that he required what fluid goes into the shocker to engine mounting on his Peugeot 605 SVDT 2.5 He said that it has a shrader valve on top of it and that he needs to know what it is and what pressure to do it to. Also would anyone know where he could go to get it done if the job is unable to be done by himself as all Peugeot...

sounds like a head gasket problem.
Does the cooling system pressurise
Is there oil in the coolant and coolant in the oil
Is the coolant dirty colour i.e. brown signifying that oil might be present
Is there water droplets on the dipstick
Does it use any water if so how much
Is there any white gunge under the oil filler cap

Hi,
Ever since buying my 306, I have noticed that the cooling fan seems to work really hard, even in light traffic, it has always kicked in reguarly.
I recently had the fan switch and thermostat replaced - both had melted and stopped the fan from working. I also had the radiator flushed of all the gunky residue that had collected when the engine...

If you have aircon, first stage is at 90C and 2nd is at 101C. Without A/c it's 92 and 97.

Ok I have never really been getting GOOD fuel consumption in my car. I got about 450 miles to a full tank.
It will do about 100 miles to £10 out on the A roads and I'd imagine less in the town. What can I try to fix this then? It was just serviced.
I was thinking some 10k boost and injector cleaner?

Hi There,
I Have a problem with my ABS i wondered if anybody has come across the same thing or has any ideas.
To the point just as i'm pulling up ie at a junction, lights, or behind a car etc i get a fast juddering noise like a servo working (abs?) or something that seems to come from the o/s front, then the brake pedal dips and the brakes release...
