Its not going to affect performance, it will though make a hell of a mess on your drive and the road. Is it the gasket or is it the oil seal behind the flywheel? My BX (same engine) had a leak which thought was the gasket and it turned out the seal.

Never heard that one before, If I remember correctly the return spring is in the electrical part of the switch and not the lock it's self.
Going back a year or two I think you insert the key and push a pin in on the side, the lock barrel then slides out.

I have a 96 TD estate and the ride height across the car is out by about 1 when the car is on a flat and level surface. The trialing arms appear to be at the same angle and I am at a loss what the problem could be.
Is the rear suspension tube mounted on bushes and if so where are they? If it is bushes are these easy to change or do I need a lift...

do you have engine oil in water,water in oil,if yes, poss head off for inspection.try a wet & dry comp test, or evan a cylinder leakage test to see if rings are at fault.it is poss that over filling with oil will produce these results,but valve stem seals will make smoke at idle & just after driving off, not under driving

hi mate sounds like the same thing i had on my 309 , when i pushed down on the back it creaked and grated , it turned out to be the anti roll bar bearings,and the cheapest fix was to get a complete 2nd hand axle to put on ,£50 from the breakers .hope this helps

You can buy the special tool to do the job, you will also find it just about impossible to do it without such a tool, can be purchased online, it's not cheap though.

Go to this site, choose J & S then drive train, there are two types.
I have had tools from here and was impressed with the service.

Cam belt checking

If you are doubting the condition or have no idea when it was last changed, replace it. Cam belts are cheap compared to the cost of repairing the engine. Cracks can appear at the sides of the teeth but these can only be seen with the belt off. I've never done one on a TU engine but it should be easy to do. Better than a BX diesel!

Just installed a new aftermarket (Serck Marston) radiator in my '94 405 GTX. Car has a 2,0 litre motor (type RFX). The new radiator has an extra open pipe about 3 cm long at the bottom of the plastic tank on the fill side (left when looking under bonnet). The extra pipe is quite in the way of the power steering pump, leaving me only about 1 cm...

Hi mick, if you are on about the coupling between the column and the rack, it should be a splined split clamp like on just about any other car on the road, have yet to see anything different, you have to completely remove the pinch bolt to get the coupling off because it locates in a groove that goes around the splined shafts.

Hi Michael, Yep could be burnt contacts in the pre-heating relay, could be air getting in through a split leakoff pipe or the blanking cap, it could even be the stop solenoid sticking but that is unlikely.

I'm sure someone will say I'm totally wrong but my theory has always been that the engine senses the heat and so doesn't supply as much fuel as when you start the engine from cold. That's certainly how it was with my old 1.6 Carburetor 405 with a dodgy automatic choke.

Apparently you should't hold power steering on full lock for very long!!! (Not good 4 it)

It sounds and feels as though the pinion teeth are jumping along the teeth on the rack, though I hope that's not the case!!!

Might be wrong, but my brother spoke to a Independant Peugeot specialist and they said that the so called idling was normal
My 205 (1.6) idles about 800rpm - 1100rpm when coldish, gets better as it gets warmer

I own a 205 (1.6), and whenever i get to about 1/3 left on the fuel guage, its flickers about all over the place.(Sometimes on reserve when i know there is loads left!!)
To get round this i go by the milage on the re-set counter... (46 Litres gets me about 330 miles, which is roughly 32/33 mpg

What viscosity of oil are you using?
Some synthetics are great but very thin so it's more likely to seep all over the place through wee gaps.
But who knows? I'm no expert on all this.
How is the car performing?

GTI rough idle / stalling

As a quick temp fix, I tried cleaning the butterfly valve on the end of the throttle cable by spraying some carb clearner into it whilst holding the valve open, this worked for a while, however havent come up with anything yet - except driving around with my foot covering the throttle pedal whilst slowing down.......

Okay, I know that just about everyone with a 205 / 309 GTI (or anything else with an XU injection engine) has this problem... rough idling, stalling when cold (or even when warm) - but does anyone know WHY? Or more specifically, what goes wrong with age that causes these symptoms? I assume these engines didn't do it when they were new, or nobody...

Is my air con working?

Hi
A couple of things to try. When you switch the air con on, do you hear a relay-type click from under the bonnet as the elctromagnetic clutch engages on the aircon pump?
Secondly, do the ordinary rdiator fan(s) come on when you press the switch?
Also, a bit vague in this cold weather, but drive around with the heater full on and really warm up...

I bought a 1999 306 LX yesterday. As I understand, when I press the A/C button, I should be able to hear a change in engine revs. However, I don't hear a thing and the rev counter stays put. Is it just not engaging because it's cold outside? I need to check that it's working properly before the warranty runs out in 3 months time.

Engine Pinks

Weak mixture and too far advanced ignition timing are the most comon causes of pinking but there can be other's like carbon deposits causing hot spots leading to pre-ignition and hence pinking, check timing and injection, if they are ok a de-coke may be required.

My 306 XR recently developed engine pink. Never had this before until recently.
The engine pinks under light to moderate loads but there is no significant loss in power. In most cases the pink is very light but the knock becomes serious when the engine is worked excessively like climbing a hill.

306 air con stuck on!

Hi can anyone help? My air con button is always on and won't switch off and the Resurculate button doesn't work. This happened about 9 months ago and the garage fixed it, and now it's gone again, and i'm not in the same town. Any thoughts. the Air con is working by the way.

Starter motors on these and now days most engines are of the pre-engaged type, this means that the pinion gear is pushed along the starter shaft by the solenoid and is engaged with the starter ring gear on the flywheel before the main current is applied, at the end of it's travel the solenoid closes the contacts that allow the main current to pass...

Sometimes our 205 diesel refuses to turn over,not 1st start of day but perhaps when hot after running (often in summer) .The cure seems to be
a) new battery (this cures for about a year despite 3 yr guarantee),
b)waiting for plug heating to finish then rapid switching on off on off on of ignition in attempt to turn engine, one of which...

Could be sucking air in somewhere, likely places are the vacuum pipe from the manifold to the brake servo and vacuum advance pipe to distributor.

Hi,
I've had a 405 SRi for years and it's been generally reliable. However lately it has started 'playing up' - just as I was going to trade it for a newer car !!! The wife reckons the car knows and doesn't want to go !!!
The idling speed has become erratic, the car generally idles much too fast, whilst it's driveable it's obviously a nuisance in...

Headlights

There is a great big resistor low down on the front nearside, can't remember if it's to the front in the wheel arch or behind the bumper but I remember it being easey to find without disturbing anything, being resistive when it's working properly it get's hot, the bracket rusted away on mine and left the resistor swinging from the cables.

'94 405 Rear Calipers

If you car has antilock brakes there may be special requirements for bleeding though I'm not sure, after fitting the calipers make sure the pistons are pushed as far in as possible, smear copper grease on the bleed nipple threads, find a piece of clear flexible tube that is a snug airtigh fit over the nipple, get a jar with about an inch of fluid...

This is my first time replacing calipers, so I would appreciate some guidelines on properly bleeding the system when installing the new calipers (without using special brake bleeding tools).

You can stick with the 16v ignition, injection and ECU, just have to rip out the old wiring loom. It is possible to use the 8v ECU and wiring loom, but you'll need an adaptor for the distributor.
You can use the 1.9GTi gearbox, which has slightly more suitable ratios than the 16v one, but they'll both fit; and the existing 1.9GTi driveshafts stay...

Water in Fuel Light

Can anyone help with a fix for a 306 DT: the water in fuel dashboard light intermittently comes on (once a week). I have replaced the fuel filter, and cleaned the fuel filter housing. One thing I did note, is that the sensor on the fuel housing has been replaced once before (it is date stamped after the car was manufactured). Could this be a...
