Given the number of 'After-sales campaign' notices concerning Takarta Airbags I have been made aware of when looking up parts from PSA for members, I thought I would post a link to the following documentary that may be informative concerning the issue with these igniters.

Disruption to Parts Service

This has caused some problems for organisations like ours and the Team are currently looking at the best way forward. This...

Searching questions on Anti-sink on Zantias

by JohnD » 14 May 2002, 00:04

The centre sphere on the rear is part of the anti-sink design. As far as I know they date from 1997 models.

I have read somewhere that later Zantias have a valve fitted that prevents the vehicle, especially the rear, from sinking when the vehicle is parked. Also when this system is fitted, the vehicle must be depressurised when the pump is running.
Can anyone tell me from what model years was this system fitted?
Is the valve a seperate part and where is...

Hydraulic Pipe renewal

by Jon » 09 May 2002, 14:22

First post

The RH metal hydraulic pipe seems to be a bit of a problem on Xantias.
The Citroen reference for this part is 5270EC, and the GSF reference is N65967.
The pipe requires a standard 3.5mm LHM seal at each end.
I have not had the pleasure of fitting one as yet.

Xantia suspension

by NiSk » 23 Apr 2002, 11:25

First post

Try this: after stopping the car, release the footbrake, let the car adjust it's suspension attitude, apply parking brake and switch off.
The reason I suggest this is that my XM ('93 TD12) does the same as your Xantia if I apply the parking brake while the suspension is under load. It has something to do with the distance between front and back...

Last post

Xantia 1.9TD VSX had the front and rear spheres changed plus rear height corrector valve. Hydroflush and new LHM fluid. When the car is started, the suspension rises as normal but if left to tick over for approx. five minutes whilst sitting in the car, the rear drops with a thud.Is this normal with this type of suspension .If you pull off this...

ZX 1.9D repower to TD

by JohnD » 21 Apr 2002, 20:22

If you were to drop in a turbo diesel engine, you would also need to upgrade the cooling system. Most turbos have a greater water capacity and also an additional fan. You'd also need to change the exhaust system. If you fitted an XUD turbo, you could expect to get around 42mpg.

I am wondering if anyone has any info/ experience of such a conversion. I have a 1994 estate and I need more speed quicker than normal, I think the engines tired after 175,000 hard lugging miles and I dont want to get into debt by buying a new model, as theres plently of life in her and its just had new brakes and tyres. Its probably due a clutch...

Xantia and Towsure towbar

by Dave Bamber » 19 Apr 2002, 03:52

First post

Hi Robbie.
Sorry mate, never fitted one but if it's any comfort, I had to cut the bumper on my Berlingo to fit one when the car was 4 months old. I didn't want to but had no choice. Have you tried Witter?, you might not have to do the cut. They are a bit more money but IMO are the best for the job.
Dave.

Last post

I'm still concerned about the fact I have to cut my bumper to fit the towbar?
This is what it says on the Towsure website
Bumper requires cutting approx 40mm wide by 15mm deep. Fits to two existing holes plus three more to drill.
Has any one fitted it to a Xantia hatchback?
Robbie.

I have a BX that is looking for a good home. Its a Silver GTI 8 valve on an H plate with a nice stereo. I dont want the earth for it as long as someone is willing to keep it on the road since it is in great shape. It has just had all new spheres but need the correction valve(rear) and new wiper blades for its MOT. Yep thats all make me an...

Which towbar do I need?

by Gavin1 » 16 Apr 2002, 19:38

First post

Not sure of this so don't quote me - but it mayhave something to do with European Approval of somesort, I think all tow bars fitted to cars manufactured after '98 have to have approved tow bars fitted by law. This would explain why one is more expensive than the other and why the cheap one is only for cars up to '98 but the expensive (approved...

Electrics for Xantia towbar

by JohnD » 17 Apr 2002, 02:44

First post

Hi Gavin - I fitted a towsure bar and electrics to my Xantia estate in 1998. If you are equiping it for caravan towing, you'll need three live wires from the battery, preferably through in-line fuses near the battery. All three need to be 2.5mm, and rather than run them through the car, I put the three wires inside a plastic tube and ran them...

Last post

Have just bought a towbar for my Xantia complete with wiring kit. However the instructions for the wiring kit are not car specific and having never fitted one before need some adice. Need to know where in the existing wiring to attach the wiring for the towing socked, also what type of connector is best to use. Any advice would be appreciated....

Knocking on rear offside wheel / axle on ZX

by madpenguin » 16 Apr 2002, 15:17

First post

Andy,
The easiest way to check the subframe mounts is to jack the rear of the car up and see if the frame drops slightly. If it does, then they need replacing.
Also, it might be worth checking for a lose exhaust. I had a similar problem once, thought it might be the subframe, then the exhaust fell off.
Good luck

I have a knocking / banging noise from the rear offside wheel area, it appears only either under braking down an incline at speeds from 40mph to 10mph and on sharp left-handers, basically-when the wheel becomes light, the noise appears. Can anyone help??
I have changed the the rear shocks, i have changed the complete rear subframe (because the...

xantia fuel flap stuck shut

by JohnD » 14 Apr 2002, 17:00

The flap is held locked by a 8mm rod in the trailing edge of the flap. You could hacksaw the rod through the gap, on the other hand, you might reach the solenoid after removing the trim inside the boot.

Xantia vs C5

by JohnD » 13 Apr 2002, 15:23

First post

Hi Micky - Your comments on the C5 confirm all that I've heard from others. In my opinion, Citroen haven't made a decent seat since the TZ and GTi BX's.

Last post

Recently tested a C5 HDi 90hp estate demo for one week. I've driven a Xantia 2.0HDi 110hp hatch for two years.
C5: more space (lots), gutless (90hp engine at 1 000 miles = couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding ), suspension OK, very unstable at motorway speeds, particularly in crosswinds .... scary. Seats uncomfortable. The 136 hp HDi engine...

Hi Gavin, take a look here
I had a bar by A1 Towing for a ZX from here, very good service, and free stuff including delivery.

I went round Towsure's joint in sheffield a few...

Can I replace these without having to remove the steering wheel?

Does anybody know what type of screw holds the air bag to the steering wheel?
I have followed the Haynes manual on how to disconect the battery etc. It then says turn the wheel to the appropriate position & remove the screws. No mention of what type of screw. I have an array of Torx, phillips, pozidrive etc but none seem to fit. You cannot see the...

XM Aircon problem

by alan s » 09 Apr 2002, 10:25

First post

James,
As a refrigeration mechanic by trade I would strongly suggest you simply take it to an air/con repairer. The reason I say this is that if you start messing around without gauges and say bridge out the pressure switch which will probaly cause the clutch solenoid to activate & we'll say you are out of gas, then the compressor can do a couple...

Last post

Hello
The aircon on my XM has ceased working, having worked through the electrics I can see that the signal to activate the solenoid on the compressor clutch is not getting through the pressure switch on the receiver dryer.
This could mean one of three things:
1. The pressure switch is knackered (there is no continuity between any of the pins)
2....

dead gearbox

by JohnD » 08 Apr 2002, 00:23

First post

Hi Lara - Having nothing but diesels in the family, I'm not to sure about petrol BX's, but I think the 1.4 BX is the one with the gearbox in the engine sump, sharing the same oil. If this is so, a diesel gearbox will not fit.

Last post

I have a 1.4 Bx 1991, my garage has confirmed the gearbox is gone. The car does not move in gear, just makes grinding noises and the speedo goes up.
How easy is it to fit another gearbox?
Can I fit a gearbox from any Bx? I have been offered one from a scrap 1.9 Diesel.

citroen saxo 1.1i timing belt service interval

by JohnD » 06 Apr 2002, 01:02

It is hardly surprising in a forum dedicated to Citroen problems to have a number of people posting with regards to such a widely-sold model.
I have had a few niggly problems with my Xantia but I would still recommend to someone willing to fiddle with it a bit because :
1) The build quality is not as good as a VW for example but it was far cheaper...
