Grinding noise from Xantia front brakes

Occasionally I get a grinding noise from my front brakes, I suspected worn pads/discs but when I apply the handbrake with force there is no grinding noise. the noise is only evident as the car draws to a halt. Main accumulator spere is ok. Most of the time the brakes are fine. Any Ideas?

This used to be a common problem on all cars a few years ago when brake pads changed to asbestos free compounds.What make of brake pads are fitted?
