Grinding noise from Xantia front brakes

This used to be a common problem on all cars a few years ago when brake pads changed to asbestos free compounds.What make of brake pads are fitted?

Occasionally I get a grinding noise from my front brakes, I suspected worn pads/discs but when I apply the handbrake with force there is no grinding noise. the noise is only evident as the car draws to a halt. Main accumulator spere is ok. Most of the time the brakes are fine. Any Ideas?

Changing BX 16 RH driveshaft bearing.

Hi Ian - There should be no problem taking out the o/s driveshaft. The dire consequences you spoke of only apply on transmissions prior to 1987 when a support shaft need be put in to keep the sun gears in place. After that date either side or both can be removed as required. As for replacing the intermediate bearing, they are difficult to remove...

More than likely a flat accumulator sphere, you could be feeling the output pulses from the pump, often refered to as hydraulic hammering.
Is the regulator cutting in and out at a high rate, clicking sound.
A well worn brake doseur valve might also produce similar symptoms.

Try this: after stopping the car, release the footbrake, let the car adjust it's suspension attitude, apply parking brake and switch off.
The reason I suggest this is that my XM ('93 TD12) does the same as your Xantia if I apply the parking brake while the suspension is under load. It has something to do with the distance between front and back...

If you were to drop in a turbo diesel engine, you would also need to upgrade the cooling system. Most turbos have a greater water capacity and also an additional fan. You'd also need to change the exhaust system. If you fitted an XUD turbo, you could expect to get around 42mpg.

Hi Robbie.
Sorry mate, never fitted one but if it's any comfort, I had to cut the bumper on my Berlingo to fit one when the car was 4 months old. I didn't want to but had no choice. Have you tried Witter?, you might not have to do the cut. They are a bit more money but IMO are the best for the job.

Andy,
The easiest way to check the subframe mounts is to jack the rear of the car up and see if the frame drops slightly. If it does, then they need replacing.
Also, it might be worth checking for a lose exhaust. I had a similar problem once, thought it might be the subframe, then the exhaust fell off.

The flap is held locked by a 8mm rod in the trailing edge of the flap. You could hacksaw the rod through the gap, on the other hand, you might reach the solenoid after removing the trim inside the boot.

Hi Lara - Having nothing but diesels in the family, I'm not to sure about petrol BX's, but I think the 1.4 BX is the one with the gearbox in the engine sump, sharing the same oil. If this is so, a diesel gearbox will not fit.

It is hardly surprising in a forum dedicated to Citroen problems to have a number of people posting with regards to such a widely-sold model.
I have had a few niggly problems with my Xantia but I would still recommend to someone willing to fiddle with it a bit because :
1) The build quality is not as good as a VW for example but it was far cheaper...

Both my electric seats move fore and aft the same distance. I suspect there is something jamming the pass. seat rails. Don't forget when you take a seat out, you will need to disconnect the seat belt pre-tensioner connector. It's strongly recommended to disconnect the battery for at least 10 mins. before touching this air bag related circuit....

Hi,
Its not as simple as a relay I'm afraid but is a very common problem on Xantias!! It is usually a result of the ignition switch itself breaking - the same section switches both the fan and the heated rear window.
So the most likely option is to replace the switch and get yourself an additional key for your key-ring!

Last August I had my accumulator sphere and two front spheres changed as the ride had become bouncy. The whole Hydractive system was serviced too, all done at a Citroen specialist. This restored a good ride and the accumulator clicked about once every 50 seconds. About a month later the rear spheres went bouncy so had those replaced but I did...

If the car is a three door I have been told you can get 205 35 17s on with a 30 mm drop with slight arch work. If its a five door I have been told 195 50 15s are the biggest. I've got a ZX TD with dodgy 14 alloys at the moment so if you get anymore info can you let me know as I'm hoping to fit 16 s. Cheers

ZX Wheels & lowering

The ZX 16v was already about 30mm lower than other ZX's, and that ran 6x15 wheels with 195/50/15 tyres. I ran a set of Peugeot 205GTi 1.9 alloys on last ZX I had again using 195/50/15 tyres and had no clearnace problems.
Thats about the only help I can offer here.

I have a 1.9TD VSX and the radio display is only showing a part of what it should ie radio station missing letters and nothing else. The cassette plays OK but will not eject first,second or even the third time. Switched ignition off and back on again and finally it will eject. If the cassette is left in with the ignition off the tape will forward...

bx 16 valve dash

i have put a 16 valve dash and coolant sensor in my bx dtr turbo. I cannot get the coolant needle to move past 40ish on the gauge. also one half of the instrument console does not illuminate.Any ideas?
Also will a BE3 bx gearbox go into a 1990 C15 diesel without any hassle? It already has the later type gear lever.

Hi Chris, I did the same thing to a 205 diesel some years ago, which has basicly the same axle, the easies way for you to go about it is to swap the entire axle/subframe from a (think it has rear discs) Volcane or other hot ZX.
I ended up making one good axle from my original one and a gti axle because of rust damaged shafts on the trailing...

hi any idears on xantia alarm,hit the first button on plip everything fine,then the second to deadlock and alarm,fine...a few mins later all hell brakes loose alarm sounds, front lights flash ..but not back,??? but did when i first got the car.car still for a few hours so no air movement to set off ultrasound side of things..

Hi Phil - If the accumulator sphere needs changing, change it before worrying about any other mal-function. If clicking from the pump is heard every few seconds, the sphere isn't holding the pressure.

You need to either manually adjust the shoes to get them as close to the drum as possible without them rubbing, or make sure the auto adjusters are working properly, I personaly ignore auto adjusters and do it my self, I can get the shoes much closer to the drum and I get less brake pedal travel as a result.

What car and how old is it? My pet theory about radiators, heater matrices and head gaskets is that they fail after a time interval, not a mileage. Particularly if you haven't kept on top of coolant changes to keep corrosion inhibitor in the system!
