Oil ?

Post by Dave1 »

The time is approaching for an oil change on the ZX td. I have used Magnetec for a long time (seems to have been OK even if it is a bit dearer and even over priced some may say). I read an article recently that states it is better to use fully synthetic oil with a turbo as there is less chance of it clogging things up. I have access to some reasonably priced Mobil 1. My question to anyone in the know is, is the viscocity of mobil 1 OK for the car? I know in theroy it should be superior oil but again I have read that older cars are often better with 20/50. I would not use that and stay with 10 or 15/40 but what is the logic behind any of the above and will Mobil 1 have an adverse effect?

Dave,
I have a wide range of cars so use a wide range of oils. I must hasten to ad that at present non are diesels let alone turbo ones.
I use Mobil one in my BX 16 valve with extremely good results, Shell semi-synthetic in my CX and 20W-50 in an 8 valve BX with a bit of an appetite for oil (must get that fixed first chance I get)
I suggest you have a good read of the information at the attached link as it is written by a guy who seems to have a pretty good grip on what is happening in the world of lubricants and make your own decision from there as to which suits your needs the best.
There are a few eye brow raisers in some of this information.<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

Very usful page. Took a while to get through but the chap gave an insight into some good facts plus the opinions and tips seem well founded. As things stand, I think I will just continue with the usual stuff.
Thanks
Dave
