Re the 407 door seal issue and airbag warnings, after a few days of rain and testing with the hose, I gave up as water was still pooling on top of the bottom door seal and then running inside the car.

My solution was to put a few holes thru the seal with a leather hole punch tool which seems to allow the water to exit (the door seal gets squashed...

For someone from the RAC to jerry rig my headlights back to life.

Forgive me all if this is blindingly obvious, I've never had to deal with this before as New Zealand drivers licenses do NOT include a street address on the photo license as UK ones do...and thus don't need to be replaced when changing address.

To change the address I'm supposed to fill in the section on the counterpart sheet and send both that...

Seems lately most manufacturers do not make small automatic cars in 3 door form.

They used to, I recall the ZXD auto, 205 1.6 auto, Saxo* / 106* auto (although these had a not very pleasant 3 speed electronic autobox from what I remember, they should of put the earlier 4 speed mechanical unit in there really as it was from the same generation ie...

I am in the process of fitting my Activa wheels to my recently acquired Xantia HDI, the car is rather shiny in Wicked red and I was wondering what colour the collective might think would suit the car best?
I find myself drawn towards Satin black or Gunmetal.

I note later 8 valve TU units (I think 2007 onwards? Could be wrong on the year) have a spring or 'pointer' tensioner to ensure the belt is set accurately. A good idea and about time as the 16v units have had them for ages :-D

Question is, is the later tensioner fittable to the earlier TU units ? , looking as best as I can at a few pics it...

Well, my little HP2510P finally bit the dust. I had got bored of having to put it's docking station in the car to use Lexia anyway. It has passed on..

So, being a nerd that I am, I decided it must be possible to use a VM within Windows 7 to run Lexia, to save the expense and hassle of getting another old XP machine.

So, I downloaded Virtualbox,...

The great thing about VMs is that you can just zap them and create another - so I did, installed Lexia, activated it and it works. I can see car, read the VIN and do a global scan for errors.

I have heard (somewhere) that really modern engines do rely on their EGR system, unlike earlier ones where it was more an addon to please the emission people.

I'm aware the (Nitrogen?) content in the recycled gas will reduce combustion temperatures a bit too. What I heard was more or less turbo...

I will be looking to buy a new car for my wife (school runs and general running around town) in the spring (possibly sooner). We really like the C4 hatch back and in particular the 1.4 petrol engine - 4 door version.

Just wondering how reliable they are - I'd probably buy an 07 plate. They seem very good value for money - quite a few low milage...

Was picking up some spheres from GSF recently. The spheres had a fill date of 2010, which I know is not a problem, so as a joke I said 'I didn't realize you were selling used parts now how about some discount', the manager promptly gave me a loyalty card which entitles me to a 10% discount until December. Here's mine.

Metal table, six or eight bricks, some mesh from the oven (don't tell mrs. N.!), plus a nifty iron grate.

Fill with coals etc and a few Morrisons burgers and lamb skewers.\

Apart from turbo concerns (probably due to service interval spacing that Captain Kirk would be impressed by) are there any other known issues with this unit really ?

I'm aware some have a particle filter and some do not, I'm assuming they have a DMF (I note the 8v 1.4 does not) , assuming rubbery crank pulley too.

Aside from the 'shared' issue...

* clutch and DMF change reported horrible - there is a bolt that is fitted from the engine side, and to get to it you need to remove the DPF and exhuast. Citronut changed one on a 307, and is not keen on doing another. 4 part clutch kit is dear, so a clutch change is heading towards 4 figures unless you DIY (but see above re difficulty).

....got this new old stock beauty at auction on ebay for £73 :-D It does have a bit of damage though, looks like it's been dropped, you can see the potentiometer on the top leaning over a bit :? I've contacted the seller and hopefully I can get it replaced or some other suitable means of repair...

Up until about a year ago I had a brand new Solex carburettor sat in its box (had it for years) gave it away.

Depending on what type of immobiliser that pump module is for will mean what you have to do. You cannot as far as I know use a keypad pump module with a transponder car or vice-versa.

Has anyone got to the bottom of why Xantias are so expensive to insure?

Just ran a few quotes at Direct Line - I actually called them up.

MX5 - I was paying £22 a month

If I were to get an IMPORT Impreza with a remapped ECU and non-original exhaust - £27 per month.

If I were to get a Subaru Legacy import, 280BHP Flat six ..... £22 per month....

For some odd reason the mk 2 version of the Xantia is (or was) in the same insurance group as 5 series BMW and E class Mercedes, not with Mondeos and Vectras etc as you'd expect

I applied for some online quotes 4 or 5 years ago, and one or two firms said we do not cover such a high risk car. (That hasn't stopped one of them sending me a letter...

Does the mileage field in the search not work?
I use to like keeping an eye on current prices of my C5 model, and other cars in Autotrader, but I have given up. Sellers got round the mileage part of the search by putting in 95 miles when the mileage was 95,000. Blooming annoying.
Now Autorader ignore the search fields altogether. Put in any...

Well sold the Scenic today as I have given up trying to repair it. It would only have cost up to £300 to replace the UCH .... but did not want to come across to another problem.

Anyhow ... bought another French replacement :) a '53 plate Renault VelSatis 3.5 V6 Auto Initiale.
Well I LOVE it! lol .... loads of power, good economy, super quite!...

There isn't a makers name on mine. All they have stamped on them is 12V 21W. As it looks like the one in your photo says Ultra PY21W I'm sure it isn't the case but they are 12v bulbs and not for a higher voltage?

I heard that later AL4 box's ie C4's / C3's etc do not have a drain plug. I'm assuming they just have the smaller 'level' plug/tube thing in the bottom of the casing. I do not have years for specifics but something in the back of my mind says 2006 or 2007.

Question is how do you drain such a transmission ? They still have the software to generate...

I tried looking at a number of C4 Automatics for sale here (around the 2007-8 ballpark) but all had the Piloted Manual Gearbox 6 (MC) rather than AL4. The documentation for the AL4 (in General for the C4) and the MC, both show a drain plug.

Just a wee update on this as I have had 15 months now. Trouble free. The odd false warning from the talking lady computer. She is a posh bird that sounds as though she has only had it the once.........then chucked it :lol: :lol:

You can poodle about with this thing..........but when you let rip, what a lovely V6 growl man. The bends are pretty...

Why do so called proffesonial mechanics do up wheel nuts with air guns. Had a puncture on the back of the van, the tyres look quite recent, and it took a breaker bar and a five foot long pipe to get them off! It's a wonder they did not stripp the threads. Other rear was the same, fronts were not so bad, they came off with breaker bar only.

May be it is just where I go but most tyre places seem to use a torque wrench theses days, in my youth (30 years ago) they all seem to use air guns.

its one thing waving/clicking off the torque wrench at an already over tight wheel bolt/nut, which has been spun up with an hammer gun,

I've noticed a big improvement going from BP Unleaded 95 to Shell V-Power (petrol) on my Xantia V6.

Not surprising as it has a 10.5/1 compression ratio so the knock sensor is really throttling the timing back on lower octane stuff, (confirmed watching a Lexia) and the engine is designed for 98.

My MPG in mostly stop start around town (30mph)...

Looking at older engines from say the 50's and 60's , it appears that they used a paper element (or a wire mesh!) as their method of oil filtration.

Then we seemed to move in the 70's (before my time so I'm guessing here) to the neat spin on cartridge.

Now it seems we've moved back the past few years or so to more engines having paper elements....

Where can I find out more about the pre-XUD diesel engine era for PSA ?

I think I'm asking about what was fitted to say the 204 (looks quite nice although I've never seen one on the road) and say 604 / 504 ranges.

Looked at the halfords pro range but the sockets are 12 point and some say 6 point are better. Also you get alot of stuff I would not use like the imperial sockets.

The Britool stuff looks good I have seen a metric 3/4 & 1/4 inch 98pc set for £110.

I know nothing about tools but want something that will last and will be for home use on the car...

My local motor factors supply 'Teng' tools as a matter of course. They are not that cheap but they do come with a lifetime warranty. If something breaks it will be replaced by the shop, no quibbling, so they say.

I was hit amidships by a Corolla driver, who drove off before I could get their plates. It's my third no-fault collision involving Toyota products.

My car is now 50mm narrower, the screen cracked and roof distorted. Yes, I have sideways whiplash and some bruising too.

Remember, this fate tallies PERFECTLY with my comments on oil changes etc...

Diesel 142.9 at the moment where i am lincolnshire.
I do 40 miles a day to and from work. I spend around 30 pound. I have a 1.9td xantia.
Say if i had a 110 hdi. How much would i save on fuel. Is there a big difference between hdi and the td models

Andy was just wondering.

There were some late model (L and M plates) 405's fitted with a 1.4 TU unit (yes really) :oops: that I saw occasionally but they were quite rare. I expect the XU 1.6 was more economical really as poor TU would have a fair bit of weight to shift compared to a slightly larger engine.

Question is did Citroen ever to this to...

The 1.6 TU without PAS was certainly imported into the UK...

I have seen and shortly driven such an example, and the lack of PAS isnt as bad as you think! its a lot lighter than a Xantia with failed hydro circuit but by far from light :D

No, she has a Fuego... It looks like you need an adaptor to radial mount the Renault Sport calipers.

For Bertie you need 406 coupé Brembo calipers, front flexes to suit, 406 coupé 305×28mm discs, and 16 steelies off a 406 HDi or facelift C5. Nobody would be any the wiser unless they pulled a wheel off to look - it even appears stock.
