Ohmygod It's happened again!!!!
After a couple of trouble free years (caliper and disk renewed which seemed to sort it) it has started again! Offside wheel mad hot and a strong smell of burning. Obviously brake binding again but anybody go any idea WHY?????

I have recently purchased a 1994M ZX advantage diesel. After a journey of around 40 miles (dual carriageway followed by town driving), my offside front wheel was VERY hot - to the point where the grease had blown out of the CV joint boot!!! on my new driveshaft too.... You could smell the heat from the brakes....

Be Brave be confident and you will get through this. I have had similar dilema's with a xantia. If I remeber correctly to replace all spheres I was quotes over 360pounds but it may be more 'depending what we find'

Fortunately I have an automatic so I can always leave it in Park, but otherwise I would just take it easy in the last 2-3 miles before home to let the discs cool a bit. If when you stop you brake fairly sharply and then hold the brakes on, it is normal for the car to then rise up.

Hi Alan - I believe there's a bloke in Holland, who has his own website that deals in it. He seems to have quite a few users of the blue stuff that are happy with it. But in my opinion - whats wrong with green LHM? It isn't as though you need regular quantities.

Clutch Pedal Fully Deppressed So are We

I'm assuming that you've got a Xantia? You don't say.
If so, failure of the clutch pedal clip is a common problem.The clip, although plastic, copes Ok until either the clutch gets old, and heavy, or the cable becomes worn. The resultant heavy pedal causes the clip to break off at the cable end.
I've never fitted one, but there a couple of people...

You need to get the front sphere's off and look at the damper size stamped on them, it sound's like they are way to large.
The fill pressure is stamped on the out side of the sphere, usualy near the fill valve.

Hi Dan - Sounds as though you haven't got sufficient tension on the belt. Tighten the adjuster until you have only around 5mm of movement under firm thumb pressure on the belt midway between the pulleys.

No - it's quite alright to change the fronts and leave the rears till later. In fact, on my Xantia estate I had the front spheres recharged last year. They checked the rears, and finding them OK, told me to come back in about nine months. But having found that I could fit new for the same price as a recharge, have only recently replaced the rears....

I'd definately start by replacing the HT leads, when damp gets into old leads it can lead to the problems that you describe.
Also check the dizzy cap for cracking, and inside check for signs of damp or arcing out. If theres any doubt at all, replace the cap and arm, will probably make all the difference!

Almost certainly its the accumulator, it will tick less on full. Change this its a quick and easy job. If this has gone almost certainly the others in each corner of the car will be in poor condition too as these get changed infrequently .
Expect a sphere to last max 3 years as the Nitrogen gradually leaks through the rubber membrane and is lost....

Makes no difference which way round you fit it, QH is a bit of an unknown quantity to me, to be on the safe side rid it early and next time stick a Dayco belt on £9+vat from GS&F, let that ride for 50,000 miles no worries.

BX Diesel Fuel Pipes

Hi Alan - If you're replacing the rubber hoses from the tank to the rigid pipes, tie a string to the end of each hose before removing it. The string will help you to get the new one in. After ten years or so, the plastic stubs from the tank will have become fragile. Treat them gently or they'll snap. Washing-up liquid helps the new pipe on.

If its an allen head bolt you might find its a 7mm bolt. Special size that car manufacturers use just on brakes. If so your allen key set probably doesn't have a 7mm spanner, its usually sold seperately for a vast sum, I had to buy one two months ago and the one spanner was 5 quid.

Haynes show's there to be speaker wire's going to the rear door's only, don't know if this applies to all variant's, wire colour's are solid green and green with red marking's in both the door's.
In the dash the colour's are left channel solid green and green with white, right channel green with black and green with blue.

Could be a micro switch fault in the door lock's, central locking control box fault, alarm control or wiring fault.
Only thing I can suggest is, a bloke on another list had water getting in which submerged the wiring connector going to the alarm under the passenger seat, could be as simple as that, hopefully

I have just bought a xantia 1.9TD. I can lock it with the first button on the key fob, but the second button doesnt do anything. The little red light comes on on the keyfob when the button is pressed so i know thats working. Neither of the two key fobs will deadlock it. I can deadlock it manually with the key, but i cant set the alarm that way!...

Actually I get this a lot too, mainly in my local area (Sydney) which is matted with power lines I had been blaming for this effect. I too suspect an aerial fault and will now check it out with renewed confidence and let you know the outcome.

Clutch on Xantia 2.0i 16v (1996) seems not to fully disengage when cold, making selection and deselection of lower gears very difficult. Effect seems to disappear when engine is warm (say 15 mins). Clutch adjustment and operation seem perfect at all other times. Maybe a sticky or stretching cable? Suggestions welcome!

What year is your car ?
If its an earlier type 1.9TD it may be easier to transplant the injector pump etc, from a later 1.9 TD (1996 onwards, fitted with egr, ecu & an exhaust cat) than from a 2.1 engine. In my experience the later type 1.9 TD gave very slightly better fuel consumption (maybe only 2mpg more or so), and dont smoke anything like as...

Radio interference for first 20 seconds

Anybody heard of this one? Whenever I turn on my Xantia's radio I get a lot of hissing for the first 20 seconds or so. Then it stops and everything's fine and lovely. It's a niggle, but if the answer's easy to find I'd like to do something about it.
I did have a problem last winter with the sunroof, which would sometimes tilt or even open up fully...

Hi Dave,
Dead easy to do provided you do not encounter the problem I have mentioned recently (almost 99% likely you will not). I belive the ball joint costs IRO £8 at GSF.
All you need to do is jack up the car, remove the relevant wheel. You will need to ensure you know exactly how may threads are exposed as the ball joint leaves the track rod....

Hi Rich, yep this is one of the most common reason's for poor starting diesel's and the first thing people are told on this site that come along with poor starting XUD's.

I've found out why I have no compression on my BX GTi. The woodruff key on the camshaft pulley has sheared and the valve timing is retarded by about 120 degrees.
An inspection of the camshaft whilst rotating the engine with a screwdriver in the sparkplug hole shows that the exhaust valves are fully open at TDC.

Hi, T55 if I'm not mistaken, but you ought to have a full set anyway, they are available all over the shop, my advice would be to buy a set with 1/2 square drives so they can be used with a socket set.
I recently bought a Torx bit set by Sealey, had to send it back because it was pure crap, suggest you don't bother with them.

I have a minor but irritaing problem with a '90 AX GT that sports a Bosch Mono-Jetronic injection setup.

it is a torx aprox 5mm but i used a allen key 5mm when removeing steering wheel be very cearfull of the wireing loom feed it through the hole with extreeeem care do not yank the steering wheel off to replace the loom(switch) is £86.00 from dealer it also works the radio so remove plugs with care hope this helps

Hi Duncan, when you remove the intercooler the first thing to do is cover the manifold intake to prevent anything falling in, it has been known, wont mention any names.......ERNIE.
Make sure the replacement plug's are for the turbo engine, n/a engine plug's can screw up the relay.
Use common sense when tightening them back up and smear some anti...

Don't know of any actual manual covering the VTS yet, but the Autodata manual on Timing Belt replacement would probably cover it. You'll also find the same engine in the Xantia 2.0 16v 7/95> (XU10J4R engine) so any manual covering timing belt replacement for that car would help you along. The same engine is also in the 306 2.0 16v. Its a 136 tooth...
