ZX rear suspension & clutch

Post by Alan White »

The rear suspension on my 93 ZX Avantage 1.9D appears to have become over firm. The rear shocks were changed two years ago. The car has always given a superb ride but I don't rate it anymore. It almost feels like I've got 200 psi in my rear tyres! Any ideas??
Also I had a complete new clutch (incl cable) fitted 18 months ago and the guy who did it reckons that it is adjusted correctly. The pedal looks the right height but you have to put the pedal right to the floor when changing gear. If you don't go right to the floor the gearbox will baulk.
Lastly does anyone out there have a ZX drivers seat for sale? - my ones well worn out. It's a sort of greyish blueish diagonal cloth..

hmm,
As regards the rear suspension problem, provided that the dampers were OE spec (Sachs Boge) then I can't think that this is your problem. Probably a good idea to get the rear subframe mounts checked, they may be breaking away. Also, get the rear arms checked (look to see if one of the rear wheels is leaning in slightly).
The clutch, well, I admit that after I installed a cluctch in my ZX TD many 1000's of miles ago, I have to get the pedal right to the floor to get 1st and second gears, which can be a problem as I have the seat a long way back. Best idea to get the adjustment checked, I think that I'm right in saying that on the ZX 19D that adjustment is on pedal height, it should be about 1/4 inch above the brake pedal, but someone might beg to differ on this point. <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

Jon - the shocks that were fitted were pattern parts - 'Power Train' which I think may be one and the same as Boge? I know that the O/S subframe mount has had it because it has recently started knocking. The N/S mount was changed about 12 months ago - wish I'd got both done at the same time now! The car has done 177,000 mls and I would describe motorway driving as slightly 'twitchy'. You mention the rear arms - can I check these myself? Is there much to go wrong with these? Are they repairable or do they have to be replaced? I suppose what I am trying to say is if the arms are at fault are we talking mega bucks? Thanks for your help.. regards Alan

DONT JUST TAKE IT FOR GRANTED IT IS THE REAR SANDWICH BUSHES AT FAULT IT COULD BE THE FRONT OF REAR AXLE BUSHES THIS ACCOUNTS FOR KNOCKING NOISE. REAR ONES ARE OBVIOUS TO SPOT WHEN CAR JACKED UP AXLE WILL FALL AT BACK. WITH REGARDS TO REAR ARMS IF THEY ARE EXCESSIVELY WORN FORGET IT TRY TO FIND LOW MILEAGE REAR AXLE IN BREAKERS. REASON BEING THE ARMS ARE REPLACEABLE BUT THEY PIVOT ON THE AXLE BEAM WHICH WHEN DAMAGED IS U/S AND VERY COSTLY.

Spanners is quite correct regarding the rear axle / radius arms. Mine had gone and fitting new bearings can be almost impossible if your car has some miles on it. I had similar problems and it was easier and cheaper to change the complete rear axle available from a decent breaker, it took around 3 hours to do and cost me £80.
