Given the number of 'After-sales campaign' notices concerning Takarta Airbags I have been made aware of when looking up parts from PSA for members, I thought I would post a link to the following documentary that may be informative concerning the issue with these igniters.

According to Takata, the chemicals in the airbags’ explosive charge can...

Disruption to Parts Service

This has caused some problems for organisations like ours and the Team are currently looking at the best way forward. This...

Checking and renewing gearbox oil

by Dave Bamber » 14 Dec 2002, 04:08

First post

Have a look in the N/S wheel arch where the gear box pokes through, follow the bolts around this, you should find 19mm (or 17mm, can't remember) bolt head, that should be the level plug. The drain is on the bottom of the diff casing. If your going to change the oil, get the right grade as I think is a synthetic type. I changed mine on my old BX...

Last post

Does anybody know how to check the oil level in the gearbox of a Xantia 1997, 1.8i, 16v? I tried to work it out with the Haynes manual but no luck .... there should be a way or is the oil connected to the engine oil (doubt that though).

Slow to rise

by JohnD » 13 Dec 2002, 23:51

First post

If your LHM is anything but a bright green in colour, it would be advisable to clean the filters and change the fluid. If the old fluid is a dingy brown, it would also be advisable to get 5 litres of hydraflush and put that in for the next 1000 miles.

Last post

Slow to rise!
I have replaced all of my 5 spheres on my 94L Xantia td
The suspension seems to take a minute or more to rise to normal drive height, ( After being stood all night, it rises quicker afterwards) Should I have changed my fluid or cleaned the filters?
Or is there another mechanical part that might needs changing????
Thanks

Clutch Cable.

by alan s » 13 Dec 2002, 09:20

First post

On a CX I once had a similar problem with, I used a couple of washers and a nut between the adjusting nut & the arm to act like a spacer.
The cable eventually broke so I suspect the cable was in the process of stretching rather than the clutch collapsing. Mind you it took about 7 years for the cable to snap

While my clutch is fine at the moment, there is no further adjustment available on the clutch cable. As for the starting, this is a real problem as it renders the car unuseable for my wife as day to day transport. The most likely culprit from the advice given is the fuel filter housing. Lubrication properties of LHM are a bit marginal and I feel that a good quality grease or silicone grease is orobably a better alternative.

Try switching the tyres across the car, left to right and vise-versa. Keep the fronts on the front, and the rears on the rear to start with. If the car changes to a pull to the left instead of the right, you've found your problem.

If your car, once it has started in the morning, starts promptly for the remainder of the day, it's a good guess that it's suffering from air leaking into the fuel system. Never seen one, why not just start your car with the spare key, put a mechanical steering wheel lock on. Use the main key to lock the doors again and go inside for 5 mins.
If you park on the road this will be illegal, also your insurance will ask questions should the car be stolen.
Just crept into my mind, some car alarms allow remote starting,...

My dad had a mondeo 2.0 Ghia on a P plate, I was impressed by the heated front screen which was only visible when I was told about it weeks later. My question: Is it possible to buy an aftermarket heated front screen for a xantia? my screen may or may not last the winter with the bullseye and hairline cracks from a stone chip...just thought I'd...

exhaust

by JohnD » 09 Dec 2002, 23:45

First post

In my experience original diesel BX exhaust systems were particularly long lasting, unlike my Xantia 2.1TD which needed a new rear box at two and a half years old. My BX TZD came new in 1991 and it wasn't until 1999 and 95K miles that I needed to replace the rear box. The car's new owner, as far as I know is still running the vehicle on its...

Hi,
I was just wondering if there is a link between low sulphar diesel and the longevity my BX diesel`s exhaust. I have usually had to replace some part of the exhaust every two to three years put i am on my fourth year

Was leaking coolant now leaking current!

by AlanBP » 08 Dec 2002, 21:51

Ongoing saga with my 91 TZD estate.
After wrestling and replacing various leaky coolant hoses, refilling the car with coolant, I noticed that for the first time the battery was flat.
Connected my digimeter on amps scale in series with the negative terminal of the battery and noticed its drawing 6.95/7.00 amps with everything supposedly off (apart...

Xantia Aux Drive Belt Tensioner

by RichG » 08 Dec 2002, 20:21

I recently changed the Aux Drive Belt on my 1998 Xantia 1.9TD Estate after this group determined that this was the cause of a rattle on startup from cold. It cured the problem.
The rattle has now returned! On checking the new belt I found that the eccentric tensioning pulley had moved making the belt loose. The centre bolt was still tight to the...

CX Vinyl roof

by bhouse » 08 Dec 2002, 19:09

The vinyl roof on my 78 CX Prestige is in need of repair - or even complete renewal. Can anyone recommend a company who'll do this. I'm based in North West Essex, close to Cambridge.
Thanks in advance,
Brian

ABS Light ?

Maybe a wheel sensor playing up. Take off each wheel in turn and check the wiring to the wheel sensors. Brush off the toothed wheel.

Heavy steering on Xantia

by Dave Burns » 08 Dec 2002, 02:33

First post

Need to know what system is on your car, you don't say what year it is, the changeover from FDV to independant supply for steering was around mid 94 I think.
In any event look at the hydraulic pump, if there is only one steel high pressure pipe from it, its early, if there are two its later.
The early one has the FDV this has (two I think) small...

hello all
was on earlier in the week complaining about heavy steering on a xantia 1.9td. the main suggestion was to change the LHM fluid and cleen filters. did this today and after at first thinking things had improved the problem is still there.
(running now with hydraflush)
im wondering if you guys have any more ideas on what the problem could...

Saxo fuel filter strap

by carl » 08 Dec 2002, 01:32

The plastic strap holding on the fuel filter on my Saxo is just about to drop off. I purchased a new strap but when I looked under the car there does not appear to be enough room to just pull the old strap off. Can I just slacken off the fuel tank and gain enough space. If this is the case is there any danger of anything else being dislodged that...

We purcased a second hand xantia L reg and were more than happy with it until we had to replace the battery. We managed to get the radio code from a citroen dealer but how do we programme it in ?. We have disconnected the battery again to see if it will flash up code, but with no luck. Any advise would be great.

diesel pump timing

by sooty » 08 Dec 2002, 00:38

First post

I've only experienced an Diesel engine out of timing some years ago. From memory if it's retarded you'll get white smoke and a noisey clatter sound and if it's advanced you'll get pale blue smoke and again clattery. In both cases you will lose power, a danger is if is too far either way, out of timing you stand a good chance of the Pistons hitting...

Last post

Can anyone please tell me the symptoms (more noise, loss of power etc) of a diesel injection pump with the wrong timing (too far advanced or retarded)
Thanks.

Hydrualic Leak!!!!

by JohnD » 07 Dec 2002, 21:08

First post

Sounds as though it's one of the return pipes in the octopus, probably the connection from the height corrector. If the octopus hasn't been changed from new, by now the rubber will have become brittle and developed a crack. Probably best to renew. A new one from Andyspares is around £22.

Last post

I've just discovered my BX GTI has a leak coming from below the front height corrector, presumably from a return pipe. It doesnt look like its from the height corrector and its not under a great deal of pressure, just a constant drip. It seems that their are several pipes here that run across the front subframe of the vehicle. Has anyone any ideas...

BX auto gearbox specs

by alan s » 07 Dec 2002, 03:51

First post

Could be a bit more than just suitability to worry about. Often in previous models (CX I know for sure) there are differences in driveshafts between auto, manual, 5 speed, 4 speed, c-matic, so I would imagine the same would hold true in this case also.
Another point is, will the bolt holes on the bellhousing line up with those on a tranny from a...

I am thinking about using an auto box from a 89 19trs petrol in a
92 19tgd manual diesel.(Sad or what?) I believe it will physically fit, the final drive ratios are similar, but I dont know about the gearchange speeds. Presumably they are different on the petrol & diesel versions, but does anyone know how easy it would be to adjust? Any info...

Exhaust replacement

by MrXantia » 07 Dec 2002, 02:47

By the sound of it I think I have to replase the end part of my exhaustsystem on my 98 Xantia 2 1.8i.
I'm thinking about a better performing exhaust. I know it isn't much gain, but it looks better with a chrome tip instead of the rusty bendy, I think.
What should I choose?
Thankyou!

ENGINE OILS

by alan s » 07 Dec 2002, 00:52

First post

Magnatec in its own right is a fairly good oil and we discussed it recently on another thread on this forum. IF however you ad an additive, then you run the risk of possibly doubling the use of a particular substance other than oil in your engine which is why playing with additives is on par with playing with a loaded gun; chances are you'll get...
