in a word ignition switch.
from memory i think it feeds a pink wire on pas relay under passengers foot well. the fuse for these are under the bonnet have had problems with 30amp fuse burnt out at connections. have changed loads of ignition switches.

I'm not sure about Xantia's but on my XM, there's one in the conventional place (a´la triumph herald) and one at the back edge of the door, in the B-post. In addition, there's one on the microswitch for the central locking system, hidden inside the drivers door.

Easy peasy, there is a product for doing this which i guess you should easy get from a well stocked auto center (i bought some in Motor World). Great little substance, you spray it on as a liquid, then it foams up and dries, then you hoover up the foam and bingo, all the mess is gone

Glow plugs has got to be your first port of call. If you are getting reasonable turning over speed then the earths etc should be OK, but definitely worth checking. Try a second heating and see if that improves the starting.

Hi Oli - Nothing to worry about - well not too much, we've all suffered from it from time to time. The fuel line from the tank to the injectors have always got to be full of fuel. If more than a few bubbles of air leaks in, it get's increasingly difficult to start the engine. Your mechanic opened the bleed screw and pumped fuel through the fuel...

Just purchased Xantia 1.9td sx, works fine apart from when accelerating 0 - 2k revs engine smokes and loses power (as if its blocked) then as soon as the turbo kicks in, usual puff of smoke and no smoking, also large smoke cloud on starting (usually overnight).

Don't know about the cables, but I'd have a look if the wiring is there for electric ones, if it was I'd be off to a breakers and snare a pair of them and all the trim bits to go with'em, the glass is also heated, very handy when jack frost shows up, you should get'em both for less than the cost of a new manual one.

Forget how many bearings unless you want to turn a fairly easy job into one full of headaches. Buy them as a kit. That should include the bearings (2) possibly spacer & thrust washers required to set the pre-load. It can be a natural occurance if you do alot of short journeys, where the engine is rarely at operating temperature for a sustained amount of time.
Blocked breather tubes and valves.

Rear screen heaters are painted onto the glass, and can be easily damaged by putting things in the boot which can scratch them. They run in parallell, from one big positive 'electrode' at one side to a big negative 'electrode' at the other. When my parents first got their 93 Xantia (1 yr old, 2k miles, obviously never been out in the rain!) it leaked just like this - especially when parked nose down on the quite steep drive they had at the time. Looking at a friends Saxo which suffers with water leaks from the sunroof area. The water is coming in at the front of the roof.
The aerial base (in that area) is not the cause.
We also tipped water around the sunroof aperture and it drained away correctly to all 4 corners as it should.

At the rear of the main fuse box you may find a Blue relay box.This relay is screwed to the fuse box.I have found if you clean the connecter and the pins, it should work again.

Does anybody know which of relays at the rear of main fusebox is front sweeper timer relay. There is plenty of mainly green and black relays. Haynes code don't match with the relay codes. Here you go Phil, these are a couple of sites that may be of some help re: Rear arm bearings.

Between them they should either show or explain everything you may need.
Regards the air/con that could be a bit trickier based on the symptoms given. The valve you are referring to is a TX valve (thermostatic expansion valve) & assuming it's a RHD...

I have the same on a '93 Xantia TD, and also previously on my wife's 92 ZX. Traced it to auxillary drive belt, that would only make rattling noise on start up during cold weather. Have'nt got around to Xantia yet, but belt change cured ZX.

Hi Dom - Drain plugs on the rad and engine block. Before re-filling, two bleed screw should be opened, and the heater control to 'on'. I prefer to use a header tank made from a plastic bottle secured into the expansion tank and pour in a mix of 50/50 antifreeze and water. The water I use is collected from the dehumidifier. Was puzzled by exactly the same thing on our Xantia HDi - but it appears it is normal. Glowplugs these days apparently take no time to heat up. By the way - exactly same on a LDV minibus I drove recently - kept looking for glowplug light on that too and it never appeared.

Steer clear of any components for your car with that name on it, you can be sure that anything bearing it will be nothing like the best.
Do the usual check's, you should have about 13 to 14 volt's with the engine running, make sure all heavy current connections are sound.
If all is ok go to your local GSF and get a Bosch Silver with a 3 year...

Even in summer, cranking is rather sluggish. As the weather gets colder, it's getting to sound like turning a Model-T over on the hand-crank. Still fire-up OK, but I'm doubting if it will in mid-winter.

its a bugger..long nose plyers really long or no chance.ive done it,pedle has to come out cut off bolt head if its in the factory fit wronge way!!put new clip on new bolt other way push cable up in to car have someone hold it in while youlift pedle up so that clip engages end of cable you will hear a nice clik when its in, job done then adjust...

Another misfiring Xantia

Xantia 1.8 16v, 1998, 64000 miles
Slight misfire at idle, no loss of power elsewhere in the range. New plugs, new cam belt, new exhaust, problem pre-dates all these. Recently passed a Lexia (?) test at main dealer.
Could a dodgy injector be the cause? Any other possibilities? Have regularly used Redex and the like in an attempt to clean the...

The suspension cylinders will wobble about when there is no load on them, the problem sounds like it could be on the n/s/r as it doesn't seem to hang down as far as the o/s/r, your arm bearing on that side could be on the way out, check to see if the arm is stiff to move.
It could just be the wappy clips that retain the cylinder and the ram, they...

the xantia failed it's mot today !! apart from some small easily sorted bits the only fail is o/s/r suspension ram broken or damaged ??
this is the mot testers excact words (or as he admitted later 'i'm not sure what is wrong as i don't know anything about these suspensions'!!)the fault is this the o/s/r ram unit/sphere can be wobbled about when...

I have changed all my dash bulbs at some stage. Follow the haynes directions on page 11.19 when you have the 'box' containing the heater control switches free prise it open. The bulbs should be visible inside.I think this is correct its been a while since i last did these but it shouldn't take that long.

I have a Citroen ZX 1.4i. today I have attempted to change the heater panel lights which have all failed. i followed thw haynes manual to the later. However I cannot find the bulb holders at all. I phoned a citroen specialist who waid that it wasnt posible to do this using the haynes procedure, but I would have to take out the center console etc....

Hi,
I had the same problem with my ZX too. I think when the car gets to a certain age, the recoil mechanism fails. I solved the problem by building myself a wooden shelf to support my stereo then removing the mechanism all together! This probably doesn't help you, but I remember when I was using the original shelf, I used to disconnect the chords...

I have discovered an interesting feature of my ZX hatchback. When you close the boot, the two cords that lift the parcel shelf when the boot is open, flop down and dangle outside the car. As this happens on both sides, it is impossible to stuff back both back in and close the boot without a helping hand or by nutting the boot shut!

The blade is not square with the windscreen, and is not turning over. Get a pair of pliers on the wiper arm, and CAREFULLY twist the arm a bit to get the blade squarer to the screen.

Does anyone have any idea why the wiper nearer the edge of the windscreen 'trembles' as it goes up and across the screen, yet wipes normally on its way down - it seems that the blade is not 'leaning ' during the upward stroke, but the old blade did this, and I have changed it, and it's still happening.

just baught a new one and guess what its true whats been said all i did was turn the ignition key to AUX possition hold the sender to the receiver and press 20 times then switch off and behold it programmed it, this was a new one though not coded total cost from citroen dealer inc vat 50.25p

alternator - black postive cover

If you mean the plastic sleeve that insulates the positive terminal bolt from the alternator body, yes! I can't remember if it's fitted from the inside or outside, but at the very least glue the bits back in place, otherwise you risk a burnt out alternator when the positive output comes directly in contact with the negative body! Cracks can easily...

just fitted the radio supresser to my alternator to cure interference on mw, had to fit it to the thick postive lead at the output bolt, while loosening this bolt off the black plastic surround snapped off in four peices, should i be worried about this cover or not??

Hello. Don't know any technical reasons but I was caught out by the inside glass panel at the back ( has air con.)which would move after the alarm was set, if I had opened the boot.Stupid aint it.

My 96 XM 2.1TD has two intermittent problems:
1. The alarm goes off at random unless the internal ultrasonic detection is over-ridden using the dash push button. My local Citroen garage quoted £22 for the supply of two replacement dashboard sensors. Has anyone experienced and successfully fixed this problem which I think also occurs in Xantias.

Hi For what its worth this problem with worn disc seem to get very much worse when non asbestos pads and linings were introduced. I have found that EBC black pads give good brakes with vertually no disc wear or damage. I have used them in BX's and XM's and after 4/5000 miles the machining marks on the disc's were still visable, a bonus is that...

Xantia excessive hydraulic pressure

The pump works continuously, its just the pressure regulator that switches the flow back to the reserviour when there is full pressure in the accumulator/consumers. I can't imagine it's the pump.
The following site describes the BX hydraulic system, but appart from the hydractive parts, the systems the same as the Xantia.
