AX Diesel Problem Starting

Unread post by jazzy »

Problem with my 1990 AX 1400 starting. It is a poor starter even when warm and when its cold its just about impossible to get going.
It will start ok though if I use the priming pump first.I have changed the fuel filter and the glow plugs but the problem is still there.
Any ideas please?

It's leaking air into the diesel system somewhere. Finding where might drive you potty! Check the condition of all the fuel hoses under the bonnet, and make sure they're securely fixed. Try pumping the primer and seeing if fuel seeps out anywhere - if you can block the return hose so that you cn build some pressure all the better. Check also the leak off hoses on the injectors - they harden and crack, but sometimes don't leak very much! I once found I had got 2 seals in the top of a filter housing that were weeping, and making it a bugger to start.
It will be good when you sort it though!

Cheers! Guessed it was some type of air leak.
Could well be that valve you mentioned on the pump filter housing, it was leaking before.
Any idea what that valve is for?

Don't know if this is relevant, but I believe the 1500D engine can have a problem with bad starting, It appears the valves are held open slightly by a build up of crap on the shims and this leads to lower compression and poor starting. Has anybody else heard of this one, "Guru" Burns, Jon.....? Or am I talking out of my hat?<img src=icon_smile_blackeye.gif border=0 align=middle>

Richard are the seals for the pump housing available separately or did you have to get a new filter housing?

thats right about the valve clearances although it's usually only when starting when the engine is warm.also it seems to be just the inlet clearances that are too tight.
