Hello Just a small question about air con. its a 1997 2,1 diesel. Could anyone tell me where the low pressure port is please, H****s is typically useless. I had a quick look but it was getting too dark to see very much.
There are two pipes by the compressor with connecters so I am assuming it's one of these.

Look on the end plate of the compressor.

The LP port should have S near it (suction) whilst the HP port should have D near it for discharge.
On a Sanden compressor if the ports are attached to the end plate (they come in several configurations) the centre one is the suction side and the one above it the discharge.

About the only way an evaporator can fail is if it either is punctured in an accident, comes loose and rubs through a pipe or somehow manages to get corroded, but either way, it is extremely rare for one to need replacing, in fact, I have been a refrigeration/airconditioning mechanic for many years and I can't remember ever having replaced one.

I took my car (306 2.0HDI 2001) for regassing (i bought it a week ago)
the mechanic told me it has a leak on the pipe that goes across the radiator. When i turn the aircon on the light comes on but no drop in revs etc. Is this usually the case if there is no gas/pressure?

Yes, there’s meant to be a so-called ‘Schrader’ valve, to prevent the gas from escaping.
Don’t understand what’s going on here. :?
There’s certainly no way to unscrew the wrong thing.
So, it’s either a faulty valve, or a dubious dryer bottle without valve, not likely on a recent car.

Most of all, the climate control board in the dash senses if the fan is spinning before turning on the air conditioning, so you will have to fool that into thinking it’s spinning.

Have got the A/C sort but it would appear to be a electrical fault some where from the connector at the compressor to elsewhere in the system.

I've got a person recommended by several garages and others in the know in Edinburgh looking at the problem.

He states the system is up and running and the compressor is definitely working...

I've got a bit of a rattle from my air con compressor, only when the air-con is off, it disappears completely when I turn the air con on. I thought I'd better fix it before the pulley drops off!

I'm guessing that the idle bearings in the pulley are dead or dying and need replacing. I've got a Sanden manual that suggests the pulley is easy enough...

After getting my newly acquired Xantia TD 1998 up to over 100 degrees today in traffic I thought I had better have a look at the fans, whilst checking connections I located a dirty connector behind the N/S headlamp and a disconnected aircon compressor, cleaned and reconnectes and regassed the aircon is blowing nicely cold (its showing 35 degrees...

It wont work . I hit the button push the slider to 18c close windows ,
outside temp 85 !!! and nothing happens it just blows out cold air , the
same as before i hit the switch . A sticker on top of the unit tells me it
was serviced last June . A comp relay was changed and it was charged full .

Looks like a bodgie on the compressor clutch or cabin switch that causes the air conditioning to be on all the time. :?
The aircon switch should cause the light in its centre to come on when turned on, and the compressor clutch should click on loudly soon after.
Maybe try going back to the June man to see what he knows, and what warranty the law...

A specialist will do a better job than you can do with a £30 can of refrigerant, but will cost more. I've seen these sorts of cans for around a tenner (delivered) on the net, so you can get them cheaper too.

I believe you will have to undo the compressor completely to clear it from the belt run.
The electric cluctch would be a pressfit onto the compressor axle.
Cant see it as a big problem converting to a non-a/c.
Usually a cool beer and a thorough visual inspection of the affected area of the belt run will make things clear - try it 8)

I suppose in many ways you've answered your own question; if the compressor won't handle it, then replace the compressor with one that will. I feel the 508 is really quite marginal on a CX when you consider a BX has a 7 piston variety.
There are gases that will go over R12 and this could be your solution, but as to what these are in your country...

If the car needs converting, it can only be done one way; the correct way.
If it has been converted to R134a, there's no point in demanding an overcoat gas as many of these require a different oil and dryer.
If the guy doing the work has run a dye in it, first thing he has to do is search for the leak not just keep dumping gas charges into it;...

605 pollen filter location

I had assumed from reading various forums, that the pollen filter woudl be in the passenger footwell, under the glove box, behind the various switches.

However, when I got in there to look (having bought a replacement filter) I can't find anythign that matches the shap of the filter!

So 2 questions.

1: Just exactly where is the pollen filter? I...

The pollen filter on these cars is under the plastic cover at the top of the engine bay and bottom of the windscreen.

Blower Fan and Air Con not working

Have just the other day replaced by Blaupunkt 3030 radio with a Radio CD single din fitment. Used the adaptor plate from Halfords and evrything worked fine. Then I turned the stereo up to loud and it blew the 2A fuse that controls the radio memory according to the book. I replaced this and everything is fine.

There’s no pollen filter when there’s no air conditioning.
The intercooler is for turbo engines, and has nothing to do with air conditioning.
The pollen filter is above the passenger floor, next to the blower motor.
There is a cover with probably 3 brassy Philips screws to remove to access it.

hi, my air con's not working, its a 2001 406 2.0 hdi 90. the fans come on but the compressor clutch wont. i checked the pressure with a guage and its just on the green/blue mark. i went to halfrauds to get a refill can, then when i got in the car to come home to top up the air con was working, so i topped it up and it stayed working, turned car...

Try with a test lamp instead of a meter.
That will give you an idea of the current that can flow.
Probably a bad connection upstream.

I've bought a can of jollop and pressure gauge etc, to top up the gas on my aircon. I'm having a senoir moment here though, which is the low pressure side?
Of the pipes connected to the compressor, is it the one which gets cold when the system is running, or the other one.....

Easy enough, the can of refrigerant will only connect to the smaller of the two connectors. Ensure that the tin is upright and that there is a bowl of hot water to dunk it in to empty the tin properly. Good luck.

Hi All, at some point in its past my P reg 405 estate (1.9td) has had its aircon system removed. I am looking at getting it put back on.

The pump appears to be still in place as do at leat some of the pipes and electronics, however I know that the compresser is missing, assuming I am IDing things right.
What is the best way of going about...

to have someone re-fit aircon to your car will probably cost more than you could buy another 405TD with working aircon.

First thing you need to do is work out what's missing. There should be:

Compressor
Pipework assembly that goes from the compressor in front of the sump
Condensor (hidden between the fans and the radiator)
Reciever/drier...

Car is a 1998 Peugeot 806 1.9SLDT with 90k miles. The aircon was not working when I got it, the radiator then needed replacement and unfortunately when putting it all back together the condensor was punctured and all the gas escaped. (dont ask!!)

The green light that tells you the conditioning is on fails to light therefore conditioning not on, also the light for the recirclating switch also not lighting, have checked fuses as shown in Handbook both ok, suspect its an electrical problem, does it have a relay and if so where is it? or any other idaes, does anyone have a wiring diagram for...

If the problem is the aircon fan stuck full on, I had the same problem and fixed it. It is the heater fan control unit which is in the driver's footwell.

Hi, i have started to be a strange gargling sound when i turn on the automatic A/C in my mk2 XM.
With the A/C on there is aprox. some 20-30 secs of silence, then a power-up sound the some 20 secs of muffled gargling sound then a power-down type of sound.
This goes in cycles while the A/C is on.
On the other hand the output is fine.

Hi,

I've just bought a W reg. 306. Low miles for good money. The downside is its had a smack on the O/S front and been repaired and there's still a few jobs to be done. It drives and has mot etc. so the jobs can be rolling repairs.

It looks like there's some damage to the a/c pipework at the front o/s behind the headlamp. I can't quite work out...

The high speed fan would have come on as a safeguard when you left the car sitting idling in the car park; not a real good practice although it does happen often. A mate of mine who is a fridge/air con mechanic often tells me that he has to smile when he is working at the local shopping centres in Summer where outside temps hit the high 40s C and...

Air Con not working. When switched on the light on switch comes on but nothing else happens. I tried disconnecting the brown sensor at the fuel filter and one fan (left) comes on at full speed. I'm not sure if the fans comes on when engine heats up in traffic, the guage goes up to near 100 but I heven't heard fan cutting in....

Hi

I've just had my Air con regassed, well tried to anyway. Under the leak test it showed a hole in the Rad.

Therefore could someone please tell me how bigger job it is to replace and roughly how much this should cost?

I take it there are no ways of plugging the hole, like you would with a normal water rad?

I really don't know the layout on a 306, but with a BX the 8 valve has the condensor behind the upper crossmember and the 16V in front of, so it's easier to do a 16 over an 8.
Just use a bit of common sense with it and if all else fails, use one of my favourite tricks and drain the coolant into a bucket (and keep it well away from dogs and cats as...

Hi all,

Car with all the rain is steaming up ie. rear passenger windows and estate load area. Will this be a problem because aircon not working.

Air con is dead as specialist says that hole caused by stone in condensor radiator.

2 questions would that be true? and anyone give an estimated cost of replacing as guy said front of car needs to come...

Yes you do the flap from up below the dash, Its a bit fiddly to do though :wink:

The motor is held on the left hand side of the heater assembly with 2 x cross head screws, Small hands make it easy or gently drill the 5 glovebox rivets out & replace them with countersunk headed bolts & U nuts on the dash.

Are you after a good working 405...

My aircon unit is acting a bit strange. If you put the key in the ignition and turn it so that the warning lights come on (WITHOUT starting the engine), it always works without fail, so far so good.

Sometimes however, when the engine turns over it won't work after that, or even sometimes it will work but will then cut out randomly. I'm not overly...

I can't really see the contact points there, but I've given it a spray of WD-40 then a good clean with a firm brush to try and sort things out. It seems that a 'cold start' will have the most problems now, sometimes not working the first time, but otherwise it seems ok.

The ABS light comes on occasionally, but I hear this was a common and ongoing...
