Hi Paul
Jack up and support the front of the car enough to clear the bell housing, drain the gearbox of oil, release the lower ball joint from the hub carrier, swing the suspension leg outwards while pulling the driveshaft from the diff, you will need to support both the cluth end of the engine and also the gearbox, don't rely on trying to balance...

Hi Tom
You are correct in your assumption that you should not be able to suck air continously through the vacuum advance unit, the diaphragm in it must be damaged to allow this, it will cause loss of ignition timing advance and if large enough quantities of air are being drawn through in to the inlet manifold will cause a slight weakness in the...

Hiya.
I wonder if anyone has tried to use the calipers and discs from a Xm or Xantia on a BX 16V?
I grown very tired of how bad the breaks become after repetedely hard use.
I know that the discs has about 10mm greater diameter but will this become a problem?
I've also thought of buying Brembo or TarOx discs but since the Xm and Xantia has greater...

I am having problems with my VTR getting hotter and hotter as it is driven.
1) The fan works ok
2) There seems to be an airlock somewhere in the system (I can hear the gurgling when it is started up)
3) There doesn't seem to be any leaks anywhere.
4) New radiator fitted 2 months ago (by Citroen dealer)
Could this overheating be caused by a faulty...

Hello Chris
Sorry to hear you have got this trouble, you aren't alone on this one believe me,
Citroen want a good %$ @?*~ for using total and utter garbage like this, my sod snapped just before last christmas, It was a 3 hour job for me but the local Citroen dealer wanted 5 hours labour to replace it, bleedin thieves. A steering column out job...

The air conditioning and blower fails to work, and there is no power to the blower motor. The Haynes manual has wiring diagrams, but none for the air conditioning and blower. To complicate matters, my ZX TD is LHD and built in Spain. Any ideas ??

Hi M8, don’t know if it’s the same on a BX but on my ZX there is a black globe built into the console beside the rear view mirror. The globe is the receiver for the remote control. If you remove the console there is normally a sticker around the globe area with a code on it. I believe this is the code of the transmitter, I am assuming this, as the...

Sounds very much like a problem I had, and it was the accumulator. Changing this was fairly simple after looking at the advice from this forum. See Xantia suspension and brakes. I used the jubilee clib method to remove the sphere from the start and had no problems. Happy sphere changing.

Well at last I have solved my Xantia ABS problem reported since months ago!
The computer at the dealer said it was an electrovalve fault, but they had no idea, surprise, suprise!
So I bit the bullet and bought a reconditioned controller and, hey presto, no further problems. The best deal I found was company called Black Box who can supply the...

I drive a 1998 Xantia 2.1TD SX which is fitted with 205/60x15's. As far as I can see the steel rims are the same size as the 1.9 versions. The only draw back is that you don't get such a wide range of budget tyres in 205 size. But replacement Michelins do give a lovely ride!

This might be a last resort, but try disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Sometimes car electronics get their Knickers in a twist!

Well sounds almosst certainly like teh head again. Sometimes there are minute cracks around the valve ports which even with skimming will cause problems.
Best to get these checked before spending money on the head. Soem palces use X-Rays to spot these failings.

This not an answer, more of an additional question. It's just that I am about to clean out and replace LHM. I noticed that one of the four hoses that clip to the side of the tank does not go connect to anything. Is it just a breather ?

Tel, if you have replaced both the belt and the pump, then the only thing that can be causing this is the belt roller tensioner. They send to get noisy as they get older. I have replaced this part on my last 2 ZX's.

Try vanaaken developments at www.vanaaken.com
They offer various performance upgrades for the 19td engine, I had work done on a ZX 19TD by them a few years ago, which took power to about 105hp from 92, and the difference was really noticable.

Hi,
As far as I know racks are the same. I think the different front track was handled by using different length rack end joints.

The oil filter is on the front of the engine, look behind the radiator, and you should see it, slightly towards the drivers side of the car.
Andyspares sell this part, our reference is N12048, the price is £3.50 (Citroen boxed)

Stephen,
Firstly, if the car clicks a lot ie more than once every minute or so then the accumulator sphere is knackered and needs replacement. The LHM should be changed every 60,000 miles or thereabouts. I would always recommend using hydraflush at this point to give the whole system a clean, this should be run in the car for around 1000 miles and...

The remote key has stopped working. We have replaced the battery, which causes it to work occasionally before it stops completely
again. Should I be looking at the key or the base unit in the car ?

Hi Chris
Your brake judder sounds like disc run out to me, you should measure disc run out with a dial test indicator, the maximum run out as specified in the Haines manual is 0.05mm that's about 2 thou, however if you have checked this on the outer face and it was ok, go and check the inner face, there could be a differing thicknes on the...

The change on AX shafts in 1991 was the length, the 91> shafts are slightly longer. The reason for this was that Citroen increased the track (width) of the AX in 91 to give better roadholding. It also meant that the entire front suspension and driveshafts could be shared with the then new Peugeot 106 models.
Hope that helps.

Hi,
I don't know anything about ZX petrols(!), but maybe this will help you:
Anti-clock should undo the plug (the one on my xantia was pretty stiff).
As far as I know, the radiator should be reverse flushed (usually hosepipe into bottom hose of rad) and its a good idea to flush through the engine block as well before refilling to make sure its all...

Have you read the thread below - question by Chris Peddle on Xantia suspension which sounds exactly same as yours - some useful replies there?

Hi
From what you say about it sounding like a tank it look's like your cylinder head gasket is a gonner, I did a head gasket on a ZX 1.9TD a couple of years ago, on that occasion though it caused coolant to escape and gases to pressurize the cooling system, I did it with the engine still in the car and it was an unpleasant experience, if I had to...

When I replaced the glow plugs on my Xantia TD I cursed those designers at Citroen.
In answer to your question, a five minute job on any normal car takes several hours on the Xantia.
Good luck and happy cursing!!
Andy

Whenever I fill in the petrol almost full, the next day I can smell the petrol at the rear of my car. I try to look for the spot but could not find it. What could be the cause of the problem ? Is the tank leak ? Thanks.

My ZX having problem with the temprature red light coming out on and off although the gauge needle is still at the middle. My air condition does not seems to function once the red light is on. Could it because of the preasure switch/Presosstat problem or my air cond refrigerant level gone low. Radiator tank look okay. Pls. advise.

I used a JR performance air filter in my ZX TD for nearly 80,000 miles use, washed it occasionally with the proper cleaner, then oiled it, it lasted just fine.
There was a very slight increase in performance.
The bset way to seriously up BHP and torque is to get the Diesel Sport upgrade done at Van Aaken Developments. You get about 106 hp, and 180...

I think I have solved it by inserting a long UNC high tensile bolt of slightly over size (13/32 I think)into the bottom most hole, after removing the longitudinal member and jacking the engine and box up to close the slight gap. The next bolt up (in front of engine close to oil pan joint with engine block) is doing no work as the web has broken...

Hi Dave - I would start by checking the solenoid. It sounds as though it's reluctant to perform.

I have a (cleaned) plastic oil can with the bottom cut out. The neck of the can fits inside the header tank and is then packed round with Blu-tack wrapped in plastic sheet to make it (reasonably) water-tight.

Hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong here but a working fuel pump is not required to start the car if the fuel filter reservoir is full and there is no air in the system after that.
Given the above then it would seem that you are getting air in the system after the fuel filter, possible areas to look at are the water drain valve at the...

I have been running a 2.1 for the past three years with no problems what-so-ever. I have used it for towing the caravan on several Continental tours, and it has been supurb. At 40000 miles I now need to fit a new cambelt. Haynes say that the starter motor needs to come off to get a timing rod into the flywheel, but I'm hoping to manage without...

The tension is by automatic adjustment. It sounds as though one of the sprockets is one or two teeth out. Several years ago I fitted a belt on my BX and did the same thing. The engine sounded awful. I should get it checked again.

Dave,
I couldn't agree more. My ZX TD has done 160K miles and is still leaving boy racers for dust.

Hi Paul - No replies seem to be forthcoming to your question. Has your 1.9TD always appeared to lack power, or has it lost it since having been worked on?

My Xantia 1.9 td seems to lack power, the engine runs smoothly, does not burn oil or lose coolant. Its service history is up to date, all the filters are new, injectors serviced etc.
I previously owned a 1.9 normally aspirated diesel BX which was far more torquey, and returned much better fuel economy.
Has anyone any ideas?

Why does my trip computer only give readings when travelling above 60 mph?, When zero'ing the trip I get - - - - on the display, is the unit which is faulty or the sender wherever that may be?, Also why does my external temp gauge read in degrees fahrenheit and not in centigrade as all other XM's do ? , I know there is a switch on the...

In case anyone else rebuilds their ZX TD engine and needs to buy new valve shims you may like to know that when specifying the shim thickness you should calculate to the nearest 0.025 mm. If you know this before hand it saves have to work out in the shop (like I had to) which is the nearest thickness to the one you require.

I seem to remember that they can trace key number by chassis number, they will require sight of the vehicle registration document to do this for security reasons.

This problem is usually caused by a faulty or dirty flywheel sensor. The sensor pushes into the bellhousing, theres usually 2 sensors, a speed sensor and a TDC sensor. You could try cleaning the face of the sensor next to the flywheel, and also pull apart the block connectors to the sensors from the loom to check that the connection is good.
If...

I think a trip to your local Citroen dealer is on the cards. They will have to burn the chip in a new key, as this is what de-activates the immobilizor.

Does anybody know how hot a 1.9TD unit is supposed to run? On short runs and when waiting in traffic the warning light indicates even though the temperature gauge reads 80C. However, the light does not come on when hill climbing and the gauge reads 90C. Have I got a cooling system flow problem?

In the end I went to a Citroen dealer and indeed there is an O-ring required between the cooler and the block. When ordering you need to know whether you have the Valeo or Bodine part.

I have seen petrol engines being tested on static rigs in engine manufacturing plants, and their manifolds glow cherry red after a while. I was told it was lack of cooling to the engine and manifold as they are designed to be in a moving vehicle and not static, and sometimes these engines are on test for days like this with no adverse affects. I'd...

Hi Chris.
It might be a good idea to check the the linkage at the rear height corrector. My old '93BX a similar problem. The cause was a small brass bush which the rod controlling the height corrector pivots in had seized. I could only raise the back manually. I removed the rods, cleaned them up, refitted and end of problem. I don't know if the...

Hi John.
Can you not lock the fly-wheel with a bar through a hole in the clutch housing? On a BX you can see the fly-wheel teeth, is your Xantia the same? Might be easier than taking off the starter.....Or do'es someone know differant?
