After 170,000 miles, mine's finally given up the ghost :-) I've by-passed the heater hoses to stop the interior foot spa, but the summer can't be relyed on to provide much warmth.
Are there any gotcha's to beware of, any short cuts, or is it just a case of following the Haynes manual.

Hi Steve, ABS is standard on the 19td SX so I would think it was also on the 2.1td, the valve block should be between the LHM reservoir and the battery.
Don't know how long you have had your car, but Some despicable people will resort to all sorts of trickery to get a car through the m.o.t, like when a fault occurs with the ABS, instead of fixing...

From what you are saying it sounds like that there may be a problem with the servo unit itself (not uncommon). Another potential cause of this fault is the servo valve, the part where the vacuum pipe joins onto the servo.

Might be wise to have the tracking checked and look for any signs of accident damage, suspension geometry could be out if it's been in a scrape.
If it was a one of the ealry model's with a flow distributor, it might be possible to adjust the assistance, but on the later car's where the steering is on a seperate circuit you are stuck with it, short...

You seem to have it fairly well covered. You might also take a look at the camshaft end seals. Also before refitting it, check the auxiliary drivebelt and the tensioner pulley for smooth running.

It sound's like a non return valve is shot, if it's in the pump the only way to fix it might be to renew it, they are listed in the online shop from Andyspares by the way, does the hissing noise change when the pedal is pressed and are the brakes ok or have they gone heavy.

Of the 3 wires that run to the front door lock I would think 2 are to drive the motor, the controller has to reverse the polarity to drive the motor in both directions for locking and unlocking, the other wire being for lock postition sensing.

Hi Steve - There's a little plastic screw on the bottom left side, to the rear of the housing. You'll need pliers to turn it. The fuel won't freely run out because of the vacuum. If you don't wamt to pump it, loosen the four screws on the top. In three and a half years of ownership I've still got to find a drop of water in there.

The reason your Xantia stays up is because it is fitted with anti-sink valves and sphere. When you start the car, normal pressure builds up and releases the anti-sink valves. The car then drops due to apparent leakage from the rear spheres.

V reg 2.0 HDi: at 75 000 miles fluid was changed, at 80 000 (approx) front spheres changed, at 87 500 rear spheres and rear suspension link changed, ride now OK but a bit harsh through potholes. Hopefully that's it now until 150 000 miles ;-)

Early models had about the same setup as the BX with a flow distrubutor valve, this has fortunately dissapeared on later versions.
The hydraulic pump now is actually two pumps in one housing sharing a common intake but with two seperate high pressure outlets.

According to the Citroen workshop book Characteristics, Adjustments and checks, fuel pressure for the BX GTi 8v should be 2 to 2.5 bars. This compares to 3 to 3.5 bars for the 16 valve version.

Unfortunately I do not have a definite answer to your problem. However if you do have a door light staying on I suggest you try and sort that out in the first instance. I had the same problem with my ZX nearside door. The light would come on after driving a short way or set the alarm off in the middle of the night etc. I removed the door...

Can't help with the keypad as my car doesn't have one.By disconecting the battery and reconnecting it you have set the alarm,if my memory serves me correctly you have to swith on the ignition and then press the ultrasonic overide button on the switch panel to the right of the steering wheel within ten seconds this should turn the alarm off.

Hydraulic Pipe renewal

The RH metal hydraulic pipe seems to be a bit of a problem on Xantias.
The Citroen reference for this part is 5270EC, and the GSF reference is N65967.
The pipe requires a standard 3.5mm LHM seal at each end.
I have not had the pleasure of fitting one as yet.

Is your Xantia Hydractive? Generally, only VSX models have it, and if a car is hydractive then there will be a switch in the centre console to switch into sport mode.

Hi Dave - My can of anti-freeze specifically says that it's not advisable to mix different brands as they may be incompatible.

Radio kit for Xantia

Has it gone yet?? That is exactly what I am after. I went to Citroen and they said they have stopped selling it, even though they still do ZX ones!! I need one with the flip down front as my new stereo's face doesn't come off.
How much would you be willing to take? £20??

I have a genuine citroen fitting kit that allows you to fit a standard radio into a Xantia (mine is pre-98, not sure if it fits a post-98), it includes a flap which closes over the front of the radio, brackets etc.
If anyone is interested make me an offer, it all cost about £50 from citroen a couple of years ago. Must go as I'm selling the car...

Hi Ben - Contact Towsure in Sheffield (they have a web site)and they do mail order. The kit comes complete with full instructions and if you have a reasonable amount of DIY ability and a pair of ramps, you shouldn't have trouble fitting. They do a 12volt electric kit as well. Since you are fitting to a 1992 model you won't run foul of the latest...

I wonder if anyone could give me some insight into fitting a towbar to my ZX Aura. Basically what need to be done, what makes are best and electrics?
Never fitted a tow bar before, and I wouldnt like to lose the trailer along the motorway :)

Hi Lara - Yes! the head bolts should be changed because they are 'stretch bolts'. Those fitted to earlier engines had straight shanks, but those used after 1986 have a spiral groove along their length. Also depending upon the date, they have different tightening sequences. Tightening sequence for your particular date would be Stage 1 to 22lbsft,...

My Bx 1.7 turbo diesel 1989 was overheating, my garage replaced the head gasket ( cooling system was pressurising), skimmed the head but is still overheating.
Are the head bolts always supposed to be replaced when head gasket is replaced? Could this be the problem?
Any other suggestions, my garage is baffled?

Just a note to advise anyone with poor starting symptoms to check the cold start mechanism. For once Haynes do a good job of documenting this. My TD was a terrible starter, often needing 4 goes on the starter and gentle throttle use untill ticking over. Upon checking, the cold start mechanism was not working, because the clamp grub screw had come...

Fuel Injector Cleaners

Hi Dave - Millers do a good fuel treatment that keeps the injectors clean. Personally, I use the diesel Redex in all four of our family cars. I find that by using it fairly regularly, come MOT time they all sail through the emisisions test.

I was thinking of using a fuel treatment to clean the relevant parts of my Volcane td. I have used slick 50's variety before. Didn't particularly notice any change, but there again, didn't particularly have any problems. Can anyone recommend a good product that they can be sure did some good. Not to drink.. I have a problem with a leaking pump at the moment, having to top lhm up about 1l / week.
The other day ( a mild early morning ), I topped it up. When I took the cap off the top ( Xantia SX ), there was steam actually coming from the reservoir !

Yes, the ZX 16v shocks are different.
I would recommend gas filled.

What you need to do is find a friendly Citroen Dealer or specialist with the 1987 version of their Workshop booklet called Characteristics, Adjustments and Checks . Section 4, Clucth, Gearbox and driveshafts gives the final drive and gear ratio's. I think that the 1987 book was the last one with Visa GTi listed. The earliest one I have is the 1990...

However before I put the 1.9 gearbox in I want to make sure I will not be upsetting the gearing greatly.

Everything you've said on here tells me you're looking for a late Xantia HDi Forte Estate - its got everything the hatch has plus bootspace and its a lot cheaper than the C5 now! Leave the C5 until Cit sort out the stability, which must be soonish?

Hi Nick, my guess would be that rather than undo the hard plastic pipes going to the turbo, the bloke that did the belt forced the pipes back to get the timing cover off and cracked one of these pipes, allowing air to escape and cause the noise.

Grinding noise from Xantia front brakes

This used to be a common problem on all cars a few years ago when brake pads changed to asbestos free compounds.What make of brake pads are fitted?

Occasionally I get a grinding noise from my front brakes, I suspected worn pads/discs but when I apply the handbrake with force there is no grinding noise. the noise is only evident as the car draws to a halt. Main accumulator spere is ok. Most of the time the brakes are fine. Any Ideas?

Changing BX 16 RH driveshaft bearing.

Hi Ian - There should be no problem taking out the o/s driveshaft. The dire consequences you spoke of only apply on transmissions prior to 1987 when a support shaft need be put in to keep the sun gears in place. After that date either side or both can be removed as required. As for replacing the intermediate bearing, they are difficult to remove...
