Xantia OIL LEVEL INDICATOR

Can anyone help please. I have a 1993 Xantia 2.0 8valve LX.
On the front of the sump there is an electrical plug with nothing attached. What is its purpose please.

Probably an oil temperature sender. May well have been fitted to all cars, even if the gauge was not put on the dash.
