whinning xantia

Post by andy99 »

Hi
My xantia 1.9TD (1995) has started whinning. The sound is coming from the front left. I assume it is the gearbox because when I put the clutch down it stops! This has only started since I have had a new clutch. Is it likely to be the gearbox? Is there anything I can do apart from getting a new gearbox?
Cheers
Andy

Does it whine with the engine running and the car stationary.
Does it stop when you put pressure on the pedal, i.e before drive is disconnected.
If the above applies then it's only the release bearing.
Does it whine while the car is moving and with the pedal fully depressed, if so could be gearbox fault or lack of oil.
Check to see if its had the oil put back in the gearbox, level/filler plug is accessed through the nearside wheel arch, plug is about 21mm and is to the rear of the end casing.
Oil is drained from box when fitting new clutch.

Dave,
The whine is only when the car is moving and in gear. It stops if i press the clutch. I forgot to add, that it doesnt do it on short trips only after about 35 miles. I have just checked oil level in gearbox and that is fine.

Is the noise constant or does it alter at all when you go from power to over run.
The bit I can't understand is why it only comes on after that sort of distance, I can only think it must be heat related, but exactly what it can be is a mystery.
These type of noises are usually down to worn or damaged bearing's and are there at all times.
A long shot is the oil that's been used to refill the box, maybe to thin, the only way to be sure is a drain and fill with the known correct grade.

Im thinking it is heat related as well. I had a similar thing on my spitfire, after a long distance the gearbox got hot then it got harder to change gear.
The pitch of the noise alters with the speed of the car and stops straight away if i knock it out of gear. I will check the gear box oil just in case it is that. Other than that, i dont think there is much more i can do apart from take out the gearbox, in which case i might just have to live with the noise for a while. <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>

Andy,
I had a CX a few years ago that had a similar noise in it that "crept up" on me. I found it by accident when I rested my hand on the gear lever as I pulled up at a red light & noticed the pitch change.
It turned out that the goose who had serviced the car had drained the gearbox & forgot to refill it after he came back from lunch; a refill cured it.
More recently, I have checked two BXs and a Lancer after purchase & found the most oil any of them had in the gearbox was 600 ml instead of 2 litres almost.
Whilst I wouldn't advise nor touch engine oil additives based on evidence of potential problems, I have no hesitation in using them in manual gearboxes, in fact I don't think I've ever heard anything but praise for them. As one of their fringe benefits seems to be getting rid of strange noises, this may be worth a thought along with a change of oil in the gearbox at the same time.
