Oh that it did do 83 to the gallon!! to convert to MPG divide the miles you cover by the number of litres you have used then multiply the answer by 4.54 this will give you MPG, in this case 26.54 MPG which I would think is about right

You need to be dead sure that all the air is out, did you use a header tank.
Check how hot the pipes are going to the matrix through the bulkhead and more importantly how long they take to get hot from cold, as this will give an idea of a possible restriction, if the pipes are warming up well after five minutes on tickover, that would indicate the...

have had problems with my heater in the car. Xantia 1.9 td . No real hot air. I have been told that its the heater radiator behind the dash and that its a nightmare of a job to replace. I have flushed the coolant sysem and bleed the air etc.

Does the car rise unevenly, in jerks? If so you may be in for strut problems. One the car has risen to its normal height, try prssing down the front and then releasing it. If you don't get any jerks or creaking here, then its not so bad. You could try pulling up the terrible plastic gaiters from around the strut rods, washing out all the road crap...

It could be the bitron unit, but first check the connections to the temperature sensor (usually screwed into the thermostat housing, but could depend on the engine fitted to your car).
My car had the bitron unit replaced by the previous owner without curing the problem, when it was actually just a loose connection.

There will always be some pressure in the fuel line due to the effects of gravity (you're underneath the car sweating trying to change the filter whilst it pours petrol on you!!)

If you figure out which transmission you have, you should be able to replace the speed sensor by the correct one for that box. I haven't got a clue as to which box you should have, maybe you could post the number of the box you have in it now??

When was the last time you had your LHM changed & filters cleaned?
It can be caused through this, in which case drain the LHM, clean filters, run Hydraflush in the system for 3000 - 5000 klms and then refill with fresh LHM after again cleaning the filters & tank.
Other causes can be faulty flow diverter or pinion seals requiring renewing,...

Sounds as though you have front strut problems.
Best solution is to go to a car scrapper & buy a couple of reasonable front struts which are pretty cheap, recon them & swap for the ones on the car. That way, less chance of you getting caught without a car if you have any problems.

It sounds like something is jamming your window. Dismantling the door trim is relatively easy, I would suggest doing this to see whats going on.

What miles has the car done? Have the routine services been done, including replacing fuel filter? Which sensors have been replaced?
The brakes: have new pads & rotors been fitted & do you know what kind were fitted? These things don't just warp; there has to be a reason.

Well sounds like you have checked most things, but something is clearly a long way out. Have you checked the timing belt is fitted correctly? Cold start valve is connected / operating correctly? all other sensors etc are connected / operating?

Assuming the LHM is 100% pure, no contaminates like water, I would bleed the brakes and do some aerobics, sounds to me like you may have air in the system.
Either that, or you have the wrong spheres on ( assuming your height correctors are OK ).
How many miles / months since the spheres were last changed ?

To check if there is a reserve tank, have a look behind the bumper below the fuel cap thats where the tank is located. AFAIK there is not a seperate sensor for the reserve tank, it flows directly into the main tank. The sensor its self (located under the back seat) is the same accross all the diesels and they do have a tendancy to die for no...

If it is the turbo version then it has 88 bhp as standard. The BX with the same engine has 90 bhp. The difference is due to different intallations, inlet duncting and exhaust lengths. You would never notice the extra 2 bhp if you could find it.

Hi Malcolm - Welcome to the forum! I too have a '98 Xantia estate and I cannot say that I've ever noticed any delay when releasing the footbrake. Admittedly, when the front wheel is off the ground there's an awful lot of drag when the wheel is turned, but since the MOT tester doesn't find fault with it, I assume it's OK.

HI, this is noty definitive by any means but on the o/s is quite a chunk of the loom and the ECU.....it would be worth checking to see if any wires have been damaged and thereby affecting the circuit. Other than that youre into fault codes and painstaking tracing - unless of course , anyone else knows better.

Got to agree; these PSA motors are extremely economical particularly when performance is taken into consideration.
We get about those mileages out of the two BXs we have (one 8 valve & one 16) and the best consumption I ever got out of the 16 was in a vert mountainous area that had speed restrictions on it which leads me to believe that hard fast...

Sorry you are right the rear centre one is the Anti-sink, and the front centre one is the Accumulatur.Not difficult working on the front spheres. Go to problems with my Xantia by Robbie,on the 28th November 2002.All you Sphere Problems are answered in detail there,regarding depressurising etc .

I would be inclined to check the glowplug relays first.
Although your glowplugs 'appear' to be working, they actually stay on for a while AFTER the light has gone out. Try counting to ten after the light has gone out, and see if this makes a difference ( it does with mine - I have a problem with one of them ).

My 1996 Xantia 1.9TD emits clouds of white smoke on starting from cold. The car idles unevenly but this settles down as soon as I pull away. I've had the injectors checked by a specialist and replaced the glow plugs. I left the car with a main Citroen dealer to check it out and after two days I was told 'it smokes a lot when you start it' (Duh!)....

Sometimes they're oblong and sometimes they're round. If you've got a round one,it's to the left of the battery, down at the front on the right, (as you face the engine). The top is held by one nut. Some of the pipe work may need to be loosened off to enable the lid to be moved to one side. The old filter lifts out and the new one drops in. Clean...

The rear axle (swing arm) bearings actually come in a kit which I understand is available ex Andyspares.
It's not that big a job; one I usually describe as 2 hours the first side & an hour for the other. If you're going to have a problem it usually is with removing the outer race which can often be badly corroded in. With all the ideas I've seen...

Since today the backdoor (passenger side) won't open anymore. The central locking engine in the door still work, but no effect! When I put the car on the alarm (I got 2 buttons on my carkey) it makes a funny noice.

Winter electronics project, in the cold and wet, with all those fidlly wires and numb fingers, might be one to wait till the summer.
Suppose it wouldnt be too impossible to have it tied into the speedo, hence the faster your driving, the faster the wipers go?

I thing the automatic wipers you can get on the Peugeot's and C5's are a good idea.
The local Pug dealer has quoted
£6.25 for the window brackets.
£130.40 for the sensor unit itself.
£43.55 for a new wiper column stalk.
Bearing in mind I have a Xantia ( not a 406 ), I won't be doing the stalk.
Presumably, such a system merely raises a voltage...

I read something once before on one of the topics regarding the Xantia remote key. If I remember well, it was because of changing the battery.
It said that you have to put the key in the ignition and turn it just on to power (don't start). Press the remote keys a few times and it should be aligned.

I have a Citroen xantia '93' VSX and both key remotes don’t work, i was wondering if there is a way to realign the key with the sensor. I work in electronics and have tested both the keys and both work fine i.e. output pulses ok. So if any one knows how to fix this problem it would be appreciated.

If it's anything like my BX it'll be mounted somewhere low down on the radiator (reverse of logical position for it!). If the fan runs at 2 speeds then it'll have 3 wires on it, 2 live feeds and a return. If you pull the plug off the sensor you should be able to short across the terminals to make sure the fans are working at both speeds.

Can't speak specifically about an XM but we did have a CX that showed similar symptoms caused through an engine mount under the motor which was mounted on the crossmember going soft & gooey. This also caused the mount on the end of the gearbox to sit on it's lower edge (it's sort of like a bolt sitting in the centre of a rubber mount).

White smoke from a diesel at cold start up means vapourised but unburnt fuel due to either insufficient temperature being developed or not enough fuel being injected.
Check the glow plugs and change the fuel filter, check for cracked or split leak off pipes between injectors, and the blanking cap on no.1 injector at flywheel end.

A couple of hours should be sufficient to do the job providing you have the right tools to hand. Torx head bolts need to be undone on the brake caliper, and a length of 7mm square rod is useful for winding back the pistons. Make sure the grooves are aligned before refitting the new pads.

Robbie, you only need to replace the front spheres by the sound of it (assuming the front isn't abnormally high), and you are of course sure that the rad. is kaput and the leak isn't from somewhere else like the water pump.
Now the good news, you will get the rad, spheres and the sphere removal tool for 185 odd quid inc vat from A/Spares if you do...

You will find these in any good motorist accessory shop, buy a known good quality make like Sykes Pickavant, J&S, Franklin.
Lace it with penetrating oil (plus gas) a few days before you intend to go in.

stiff getting into gear

Does it crunch when you stick it in reverse, if it does the clutch is dragging, not freeing properly and still rotating.
Are all forward gears difficult to engage or just 1st and 2nd, if it goes in to reverse ok and the prob in on 1 and 2 it could be weak syncros, or if its all forward gears it could just be linkages.
