Correct oil is 75W-80 gear oil GL-4.
The Total item is Transmission 8 Gear oil, which is the above spec. Available at any Peu/Cit parts counter as well.

Important to use GL-4, and not GL-5 (or 4/5). GL-4 contains the correct friction additives for the synchromesh to operate correctly.

Greetings from France and thank you all for the welcome and the advice.
Took 4 months to register the 405!!!! Glitch in the French system - amazing.
I recently had the BE3 trans fluid changed by a local garage - IGOL 75w80; can't confirm if it was GL-4 but will eventually put the Gear 8 in it as 'white exec' recommended.
Trans shifts smoothly now and I have discovered that I had been a little too aggressive in changing gears which caused
slight consternation in the synchromesh ranks; nothing major. I've now learned to change the gears swiftly, directly and gently. Next fluid change will be done by yours truly.
I've racked up 8K kilometers on 5w-40 Shell Helix Ultra fully synthetic oil; which seems to be doing just fine. No leaks, sounds the same as before and keeps running smoothly.
There is now a total of 68K kilometers on the clock - it's just a pup!
By the way ... White Exec ... did you want me to pm you?
I've also noticed that the springs in the transmission gates are still very solid and actually reminded me that I unintentionally pushing the gear stick at a slight diagonal forward when
changing the forward gears, causing the slight crunch on the syncros. Having driven some ancient Ford and Kenworth fuel tankers and floating the gears; I should have known
better.
Many thanks to you all again,
RONDO
