noise from front Passenger side / failing GPS aerial

Post by jgra1 »

hi all :-D

sorry for the twin post!

In recent days my X7 2.0 Hdi has been making a noise from something under the passenger side headlight.. it's hard to describe but some kind of leak or electrovalve maybe? any idea what lies beneath? It happens at any time, and maybe contributing to economy mode but I am not sure..

Also, I noticed my GPS stopped reading elevation a few months ago, and now gets confused with my location - I presume the aerial or wiring is suspect, where is the GPS receiver itself?

thanks as always,
John

The GPS receiver is built into the NG4 John. But, before doing anything else regarding the GPS, make sure you have turned OFF the Synchronise Time with GPS setting as this was required on the Harman units to counter the GPS N Week Rollover bug, which can cause positioning issues.

Not Sure about the other issue, but electrovalve noises can be from the EGR valve doing the self-cleaning check / anti-stick strategy when the ignition is switched off.

thanks Marc..

Sync is turned off now, wasn't until recently.. now it appears greyed out anyway... I hadnt really noticed this setting until a few weeks ago, i think that's when I turned it off (my time was also a bit all over the place! still is)

Noise def coming from under the headlight, I may have a closer look and see what's in there, will grab a video maybe too :) (unless you have one of your top diagrams showing what could be down there? :)
It really only started a couple of weeks ago, never heard this before from this part of car)

You don't have directional headlamps so won't have the dynamic headlamp corrector unit - so still may be one of the headlamp adjustment motors if you can't identify anything else and it's coming from under the headlamp.

At night, aim the vehicle if you can against a wall and turn the headlamps on and with engine running, try forcefully sitting in the boot a few times and keeping an eye on the headlamp correction to see if it is adjusting ok.

hi all, after some time away from this, including last week out of the country, I have come back and the car is still making the noise :rofl2: it now sounds like a steam engine waiting at a platform, and can be heard from 50 meters..

I just removed the battery, and the noise continues.. I now know where it's coming from, a leak from a black box under Passenger headlamp, and next to the horn... I suspect it's an easy fix once I have removed it, access is tough though.

Marc, would you be so kind to grab a diagram showing its location/ID for me? - just curious really :-D

Below from another post Marc, sounds like the offending item... I can stop the noise if I wiggle harness?? but battery not even connected to car! are there Vac pipes going into it?

The Headlamp beam correction unit is either under the left hand light unit or under the battery housing (depending on engine).

Hi John - no, not an annual fee - Donor status remains, but is for up to 2 years.

This is the location, item (15).

I've put up the removal refitting guide for the headlamp correction unit in the Member's resources section, link below:

quite a large metal box with something inside, looks like 3 or 4 wires going in..

Ok, so this is the Dynamic Headlamp Beam Correction Unit and I should of realised that with Hydractive Suspension you will have this fitted. It will either be this unit that is either fitted under the battery or under the left headlamp depending on engine.

The only other thing I could think of was the alarm module (which of course is independently powered) and because of what you said about it making a noise with the battery disconnected. Having said that, the dynamic beam correction unit may well have a residual charge when the battery is disconnected, so would soon stop after a battery disconnection (and you could test this by disconnecting the battery and then trying to flash the headlamps with the stalk for example to possibly discharge any residual current).

Back to the Dynamic Beam Correction Unit. I had to do a bit of digging as this unit of course is used for vehicles with Xenon directional headlamps - which you don't have, so Citroen don't show this as a valid part on the parts diagrams for your vehicle with Halogen lamps.

Anyway here it is shown (if indeed this is the box you think is making the noise): Item (1), part has been replaced with 6224T4 at a tidy sum of £239.58.

6224P5 was the original unit Part number in case you will be looking for a used one John.

hmmm.. thanks Marc..

I am leaning towards the Alarm! the noise carried on for, well, hours after battery was disconnected, albeit quieter.. I will do the headlamp test anyway for fun..

if it is the DHCU, and I don't need it and it does nowt, I may just disconnect it! :)

not going to lose any sleep over it yet.. just looks like a possible bumper off to get any better eyes on it.

IIRC the alarm system has its own backup battery so disconnecting the main battery (using the safe routine) should silence any errant motor or servo and leave the alarm noise to continue.

Be wary of doing that John, as not having the manual switch in the dash like metallically sprung versions, the headlamps will rely on the height suspension correctors and the DHBU to change the headlamp heights (as the hydractive system is not fast enough to compensate). It may be the alarm unit as I mentioned - but at least you should be able to determine what it is now. If the DHBU, it will be held in place by the bracket also see on the parts diagram.

These are the Alarm components: (1) is the control module and (4) is the Siren - so you should be able to rule these in or out....

thanks Both.

Despite me saying I would not lose any sleep over this, I parked the car outside my window last night and lost some sleep with the noise :rofl2: at least a reasonable Ashes Cricket response was available..

Yes, that alarm siren is the culprit.. it's sitting inside the steel box in my pic.. I shall unplug it for starters for the sake of others locally..

here is a typical one, for example..
