C4 2010 heated seat question

Post by admiral51 »

Probably a silly question but....

The drivers seat heating does not work and i kinda left it alone as i know from info given in other posts that it could get expensive.
However today i am convinced it was working albeit for a short while but @ 4:30 this morning the seat was warming up.
Now what i have noticed is that the switch on the passenger side is always lit when the engine is running but the drivers side switch isn't.

I have just gone out and checked it again tonight and the drivers switch did light up but only for a few seconds and again for a few seconds with some wiggling of the seat side panel plastic housing.

So assuming both switches are the same for both sides i was going to try and swap them around but i have no idea if i need to remove the plastic housing or if i can pop the switch out and gain access to the wiring plug as i don't want to break anything :)

The heated seat switches are identical Colin.

The seat panel trim has a bolt at the rear that needs removing, then trim tools to remove the panel carefully as the connectors and wiring are on the other side. The bolt is at the rear centre of the side trim panel (6) shown below.

Marc sorry to be a pain but...
Looking at the diagrams would i be correct in thinking that i could actually remove the plugs from 7,8,9 and 10 and plug the whole assembly into the opposite seat wiring for test purposes?
I was just thinking that maybe item 7 could be an issue and rather than swap just the heated seat switch i should just swap the lot over to see if i get the same issues on the passenger seat which i know is working correctly ?

Hi Colin. no that won't work as although the heated seats have identical connectors, the heated seat control units have different pin-outs, so you could damage the circuit. I've highlighted some of these and you can see the pin numbers are in different positions.

Am i missing something or are they not both the same pinouts??
The schematic diagrams dont show true pin positioning, only how the wires connect, they move the positioning about on the diagrams to make the diagrams easier to read so there are not too many wires crossing over each other.

Of course, I must of lost the plot on this one! Oops

At least that will test the connector blocks / switch units / rheostats - or show a wiring fault if the swap fails to work Colin.

Thanks guys :)

I have managed to remove the side panel but i only have the 3 plugs for lumbar/ massage / heat buttons, i do not have item 7 which looking back at the images that would appear to be for fully electric adjustment ?
So what i have managed to do is swap the heat switch for the passenger side one and the old one does work correctly in the passenger side :(
The drivers side switch does light up and stay lit once the engine is running only if set to zero, as soon as the dial is turned to 1-3 then it stays lit for approx 10 seconds and then goes out and i have tried this with both switches and the same thing happens.
I have found a yellow connector underneath the seat that i assume all the wires for the seat go to but cannot see any issues with that.

I must have been wrong about the seat heating up and i guess i will have to live with it as it is.

Both are not working Marc just wondering why the switch light goes out after approx 10 seconds of turning the dial from zero to any of the 1-3 settings.

I'm thinking poor wiring connection somewhere, with just enough juice to light the dial before it ebbs away....

The switch stays lit until i turn the dial so something is def not right :)
The switch will not light up again until the engine is switched off and then on again

Would it be possible to have the full electric diagrams for my heated seat arrangement as i think i may need to get an auto sparky to take a look at this for me.
Any advice on what steps to take prior to unplugging the yellow connector under the seat, not sure if this connector has anything to do with the seat belt pre tensioners.
Was thinking maybe take the seat out to gain better access but then guess the wires need to be tested in situ ?

Picture of connector to be added asap :)

Hopefully i will have chance to have a chat with the auto electrician tomorrow so any pointers in what the yellow connector is and what it powers would be helpful.
Fingers crossed it is only power to the seat functions, lumber massage and heat so knowing how to get the side panel removed it may be possible for him to test the wires in situ without the need to remove the seat.

*** Warning stupid questions next ****

1. As for the heating switch i guess 1 wire is power to the illumination part of it and the other 2 are + and - to the rheostat to vary the temperature ?
2. Can i put direct power to the plug once unplugged from the switch and if so what damage/carnage could be done
