Rear Left Suspension Bucking

Post by FlyMike_88 »

Evening all,

I'll try and describe this as best I can!

My C5 X7 Exclusive Tourer (83k miles 59 plate) rides very well on the motorway and over slowly undulating roads, soaks them up like no other car I have owned. When I slow down and go over a speed bump or similar bump in the road, I can feel the rear left of the car almost buck. That side goes completely firm and I can feel it in the car. I'm going to get it up on the jack tomorrow but any initial thoughts on where to be looking?

The car raises and lowers seemly okay when operated with the buttons.

I've read a little about checking the height correction adjuster and possibly changing the sphere on that side?

Thanks for all the help so far by the way, very useful resource this forum!

It sounds like a failed corner sphere. You could try swapping the left and right spheres to see if the fault moves.

Thanks! I’ve ordered a new rear sphere and tool. I’ll replace the offending side and report back if it solves the problem.

It could be worth considering replacing ALL of the spheres if changing the suspect one resolves the issue.

So I have purchased a sphere removal tool and 2 rear spheres.

Can this be done DIY or does it require a garage to do the work?

I have a jack and axle stands. My understanding is:

Lower car to lowest setting
Cap off of LHD (leave for 10/15 mins)
Slowly loosen sphere (leave for 5 mins)
Remove sphere, watch for spillage
Relube new seal with fluid
Replace new sphere
Lower car and cycle system.

Is this correct?

Thanks,

Mike

No Mike.

The system needs depressurising first all or it will be the fastest way you have travelled to the next County!

You have several options, depending on whether you have a Lexia / Diagbox diagnostic kit or not.

A) If you have such a kit, you can depressurise the whole suspension system using this method:
  • Start the engine.
  • Set the height control to the "LOW" position.
  • Wait for the vehicle height to be in the required position.
  • Stop the engine.
  • Connect diagnostic tool to the vehicle’s diagnostic socket.
  • Switch on the ignition.
  • Carry out an global test.
  • Go into the menu:
  • Suspension
  • Depressurising the system
Follow the instructions displayed on the screen. Wait for the vehicle’s suspension to sink completely - This can take at least 3 minutes.
Switch off the ignition & Disconnect the battery. This is essential, as the suspension system is active with the ignition off and if a door is opened it will trigger the system to operate!

B) If you don't have a kit, you can manually depressurise the front or rear axles independently, depending on the spheres you are replacing.

Disconnect the battery.
Raise the vehicle and support on axle stands, wheels free.

  • Place a hose on the pressure release screw (1).
  • Gradually unscrew the pressure release screw (1).
  • Wait for the pressure in the hydraulic circuit to fall fully.
  • Place a hose on the pressure release screw (2).
  • Gradually unscrew the pressure release screw (2).
  • Wait for the pressure in the hydraulic circuit to fall fully.
You will loose fluid, so don't re-use any reclaimed LDS that comes out, so make sure you have sufficient new LDS fluid to hand.

Thanks Marc, don’t want to be traveling to the next county haha.

If I was to buy, where is the best place to buy Lexia and DiagBox software? I’ve seen a thread about forum member discount at EasyDiagnostic?

Thanks, Mike

Re: Rear Left Suspension Bucking

Post by FlyMike_88 »

Hi again all,

I am struggling to source the correct part number for the rear nearside sphere but getting confused by all the different versions. I know the centre rear spheres are referred to as accumulators but are the rear left/right referred to differently?

Happy to provide VIN and pay the donation for a parts list if that would work?

Many thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike

If you think you will require current and accurate data parts info / diagrams for up to 2 years, by all means see the table below for info / donation links.

The spheres on each wheel are generally referred to as the 'Corner' spheres. The front centre and 2 rear centre spheres on the X7, when active, are used to ensure normal / comfort mode. These three centre spheres are switched out or deactivated when the ECU or the driver switches to 'Sports' mode. This provides the firmer ride and roadholding.

The spheres have different pressures depending on model and type of sphere. If you go ahead, pop your VIN up afterwards so I can advise of the correct spheres.

Thanks Marc, donated the £10, totally worth it for the info provided already!

Would you be able to provide a rear left sphere part number and some general info about my car? My VIN number is VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff].

Many thanks, Mike

Hi Mike, no worries, give me a second...

Your car was built on 09/05/2008, uses the DW10BTED4 (RHR 100KW version), not the RHF 103kW version. It is Euro 4 standard and has a Delphi Injection system.
It's colour is Thorium Grey, has the AM6 Automatic gearbox, DPF, additive tank and Electric power assistance.

You have standard Halogen headlights, it has an RT4 telematics system with voice commands for some functions and internal (non-bluetooth) telephone that uses a SIM card.

You have full leather seats with massage function and welcome function with ambient lighting.
The memory controls also control the seat positions and settings as well as the climate control settings and wing mirror adjustment settings.

If there's anything specific you need, let me klnow.

These are Citroen part numbers for Genuine Citroen spheres.

Front Corners:
OEM Original Part: 1638046680 £143.18
Cheaper Version: 1638377980 £46.81

Rear Corners:

Hi Marc
You’re like the CIA with your knowledge of our cars :-D
That’s interesting about the OEM and ‘cheaper’ sphere versions. Are they both available from the dealer, and I wonder what’s the difference that makes one almost 3x the price of the other?

All the best

Hi Steve, sut mae’n mynd? I always like a bit of Cash In Advance" :-D

The expensive ones are the brand new originals as fitted to the car at new. They should provide a long service life.

The cheaper ones are supplied by Eurorepar - these are re-used units, hence the cheaper price. But don't ask me what the quality is like or what they actually do to them - whether they just re-gas them or whether they repair or replace the diaphragms I can't say, but Eurorepar are used by PSA to provide lower cost parts for older cars.

Eurorepar was set up by PSA in 2003. Parts are new, and warranted for 2 years.
Full details if you google 'Eurorepar - Groupe PSA'.
Mister Auto is another PSA subsidiary, also involved in aftermarket multi-marque parts supply.
